Vehicle Detail
Here is your chance at a true classic. What we have here is a 1965 Mustang I built for my son about 3 years ago. We would keep the car forever but he is heading off to college in the artic tundra and necessity demands a 4 wheel drive. I have been restoring muscle cars for many years and when he decided he wanted a classic Mustang the search was on. After months of searching we finally happened upon a great body to work with. A car that had spent all of it’s life in Arizona’s dry climate and owned by an elderly lady that had only put 95K miles on the chassis. Other than a few bumps and bruises the body was very strait. You should have seen the floors and trunk on this car. I have never seen such a rust free early Mustang. The car had a sprint 200 six in it with a c4 auto and a green dot shifter. and believe it or not after years of not being driven an oil change and tune up and it ran like a charm. We did replace a few things like the distributor, alternator, hoses, belts, plugs, wires, heater core, battery, and brakes all the way around. We serviced the transmission, rebuilt the carb and we were off and running. After 2 rebuild kits and much agrivation on the stock carb we gave up and installed a Weber set up with a K&N filter. What a difference! More power, more economy and it ran smooth and purred. The plans originally were to install a 302 but this motor ran so well and never leaked that we left it alone. 24-26 MPG never hurt either. The sound is great through the dual GT exhaust trumpets. Never sounds like a whimpy six, sounds nice. We did a very nice build on this car but not quite the high dollar build I put into my show cars. We were building a car he could drive to school and on dates. The car was painted in Corvette Torch Red ( I know not a Mustang Color) by a friend in his body shop. It is a nice paint job but not show quality, just very nice. My wife was concerned about juniors safety so we hit the junkyard and aquired a full interior out of a 2003 Nissan Maxima (Leather) and even installed the three point harness hidden seat belt set up to appease the Mrs. The seats are six wax power but I have never taken the time to hook them up all the way. We set them to the correct level for his legs by applying power to the switch but never tied it all in. Should be easy to finish. I had custom door panels made and installed after re working the window assemblies (they roll up and down like new) and installed a new dash bezel and a nice Pioneer stereo with 4 Pheonix Gold speakers. Most of the interior chrome (handles, windlace, ignition, door locks, trunk lock, keys, leather wrapped alluminum Grant steering wheel, Shifter handle, etc. are all new. The dash is the original red (not cracked) and the headliner the original white and still quite nice but shrinking a little near the back window. (Not bad enough to replace) We installed an alarm system and door lock actuators so with the click of the remote the doors lock or unlock and the alarm turns on. This is one feature that sure would have been nice on an original 65 Mustang. The old girl has almost all new chrome. Bumpers, bezels, lenses, rubber, tri bar headlights etc are all new. We had one change of mind at the end of the build and used cobra emblems. All good except the small hole in the bottom of the from fenders for the original emblems are still there. Very hard to see but they are there if you ever need to use them. The Cobra’s are stick on and could easily be removed. We installed a new windshield and gasket. We bought a billet Shelby gas cap for a custom look as well as a TCI center console and custom floor mats. For a finishing touch we ordered a custom cut set of Coy’s Elenor style wheels and wrapped them in new rubber. I don’t get the chance to drive the car very much but when I do its amazing how nice it runs and how many looks and stares it gets from passers by. It has not gotten very many miles on it since school is only about a mile and a half away and most of his friends live close. It has a small squeek or two and a few small rock chips that I have touched up with the factory color but other than that is just as nice as the day we finished it. It’s not a show car but almost everyone would be impressed with what she is. The things it will need in the future are a set of front tires, and though it drives well I would probably rebuild the front end in a few years. Other than that it’s ready for another 100K miles. So now’s your chance to have an amazing slice of history. You can drive this car anywhere. It starts every time, never overheats, shifts perfectly through every gear, and puts a smile on your face. You can leave her the way she is or use the rust free beauty to install some high horse power plant and scare the neighbors. With todays gas prices I think the good milage is a definite plus but my muscle car background understands the need for a thrilling right pedal.
