Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a really nice, original, 240 wagon with a 5-speed manual transmission. This wagon only has 78,XXX miles on it and is in beautiful condition as the linked photos will convey. I have a weakness for these 240's (sedans and wagons) so I "jumped the gun" and purchased this lovely example before consulting the "boss". So, in order to maintain peace in the household, I am going to do the right thing and let it go (sadly, because finding another in this condition, when its time, will be difficult) . A little history about this car: I purchased this 240 from a fellow who got it directly from the original owner here in NC. Through information he gave me (and from the original paperwork included with the car) I was able to contact that original owner (a very nice elderly lady) and get a thorough history of the car and its life here in NC. The fellow I bought it from picked it up for his teenage son (because he wanted him to have a "safe, sturdy and relaible car") and , of course, it just wasn't something he wanted to be seen in by his friends ("not cool at all") so it sat in his yard for 2 months before Dad decided to resell it and thats when I was fortunate enough to find it. That 2 month period of time was the only time in the life of the car when it was was not garaged or kept protected from the elements. When I got the car it was in need of a good exterior cleaning. I washed and waxed it and it needed absolutely nothing else (except a drivers-side door map pocket which I will ge to in a minute) to be near perfect. While giving it a thorough cleaning, I noted that the left rear upper quarter panel had some checking/fading in the clearcoat and there were a couple of small "spots" (hood and roof) where the clear coat was etched (like where sap may have been) , otherwise the paint was in amazing shape for a 20-year old car. This deep green-blue metallic paint is quite a stunning color. The checking in the clearcoat on the left rear quarter was what prompted me to call the original owner and ask about the cars history. Mrs. Murphy (the original owner who truly loved this car) told me that she had gone grocery shopping one Sunday and parked the car away from all the other cars in the parking lot (as she always did to avoid "door dents" ) and upon coming out of the store she looked over and watched helplessly as an elderly lady bumped into that rear quarter, putting a small dent in it above the rear wheelwell. Mrs Murphy told me the damage was very slight but she decided to have it repaired and apparently the body shop re-clearcoated that area and over the years it dulled complared to the surrounding original clearcoat. There is no evidence of any body work (or dent repair) from the outside or inside of the rear quarter (behind the original spare tire) which leads me to believe the damage was indeed very slight. Someone skilled with a buffer and compound use (not me) could probably bring the faded clearcoats shine back without too much difficulty at all. Other than those small areas mentioned, the original paint on this car is really exceptional for its age. There are 2 small dings (pencil-eraser-sized) on the entire car and those are on the roof (none on the doors, fenders or hood) and are not really noticable unless pointed out. According to Mrs Murphy, she and her husband looked all over the southern states for a 5-speed wagon and couldn't find one so a friend (and Volvo dealer) in PA special-ordered this 240 in for them exactly as you see it in the photos. The only non-original item on this car (other than the tires of course) is the drivers side door map pocket which was cracked (very common on these 240's because they are constantly being kicked when getting in/out of the car) and removed. I have since replaced it with another OEM Volvo map pocket (which was black) that I tried to paint-match to the interior (unsuccessfully--its a shade lighter than the original tan interior color)- Occasionally a true-matching tan map pocket will come available here on Ebay but when I was searching the only good one I could find was black so I made do with it. Even the hubcaps on this wagon are the originals--without scratches or worn paint--truly amazing !. All the factory manuals/documentation (original bill of sale and some other documents) are in the glovebox--the "we hope you never have to open this" envelope from Volvo "oncall" is still sealed !. The factory window security stickers are intact, in an envelope and unused, the original tool kit looked like it had never been opened until I got the car. Mechanically, the car runs, drives, steers and brakes perfectly. The transmission shifts perfectly and the clutch is smooth and firm. The suspension is tight. All the gauges, lights, switches work as they should. The heater and AC perform as they should. The radio works but I have noticed that it will occasionally "fade out" then come right back on again intermittently (?). The tires have plenty of tread on them. The interior is in excellent condition--the seats show virtually no wear and there are no cracks or broken seams in the vinyl--again, truly amazing for the age of the car. The dash does have a small crack near one of the windshield vents but compared to most of these 240's its as close to perfect as one gets. The carpet is in really nice shape but there is some fading (which, again, is very common)--mostly in the back cargo area and there is one stain there too (which I'm sure can easily be removed with some carpet cleaner). This car has spent its life in the south so you can rest assured its chassis is rust-free and very clean. It is obvious that this particular 240 wagon was a loved and very well cared for "family member" as Mrs Murphy conveyed to me during our conversation. I hope whomever is fortunate enough to own this wagon next treats it was well as its original owner--if so , it should easily be around for another 20 years !!. If you have any questions or want additional photos please feel free to contact me @ 919-544-7671. Addition: I have a complete, like-new, OEM Volvo hide-away rear (or third) seat with all the necessary hardware for this car. I didn't install it because it requires drilling the body to mount and the car is just too nice (in my opinion) to mess with the original metal. I will include it if the car meets reserve. Of note: I plan on listing this wagon locally as well and ,as such, I retain the right to sell it at anytime during and outside of this auction. Thanks for looking and happy bidding to all, D.Bentley http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/001.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/003-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/004-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/005.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/006.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/007.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/008-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/009-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/010.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/011-2.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/012-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/014-2.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/015-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/016-2.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/017-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/018-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/019-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/020-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/021-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/022-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/023-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/025-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/030-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/031-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/034-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/035-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/037-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/039-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/040-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/041-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/043-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/044-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/045-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/046-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/047-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/048-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/049-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/050-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/051-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/052-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/053-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/054-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/055-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/058-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/061-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/059-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/066-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t44/04cobra_bucket/067-1.jpg
