Vehicle Detail
Hi Folks. A scam artist from the Czech Republic clicked buy-it-now and added about four hours of work for me to straighten out this mess here on a Sunday, when we all have better things to do. I listed this as open to US buyers only, yet ebay allowed someone from the other side of the world to bid. Go figure. I am relisting it now. I will remove bids from anyone I deem suspicious. I will remove bids from anyone outside the US. I also got a ridiculous amount of email ftrom other scam artists. HERE'S THE DEAL. I am not stupid or gullible. DO NOT BOTHER. This listing is for CASH ON PICK UP ONLY, AND US BUYERS ONLY! And pickup must happen within 10 days. Paypal means nothing to me. No deposits through paypal, NOTHING. Now that that is out of the way, please enjoy reading about a fine, extremely rare automobile that can be yours for a very cheap price! This is one of the oldest, running cars you will see in existence today. I have it listed with a reserve that is considerably less than it is worth. This 1917 Chevrolet was so popular that it propelled Chevrolet ahead of Ford in terms of production that year. To be fair, though, Ford did shut down its assmebly line to re-tool for part of the year. This is the 490 series, 4 cylinder car. It has a gravity fed cooling and fuel system - primitive, simple yet wonderful. I drove it around at about 30 MPH just the other day. Recent work includes: original, honey comb radiator was professionally cleaned and entire cooling system was flushed, water pump was taken off and inspected and the valves were adjusted. This car runs as well as it did in 1917. The wheels are made of wood - that's right wood. When most people drive antique cars down the road, they are usually in Fords from the 20's and up. You hardly ever see a Chevrolet this old. An interesting thing to note; this car does not have a value cover. It is an open works motor. That's the way it was in 1917. In addition to keeping oil in the lower part of the motor, you were also supposed to pour some oil onto the valves on top every 50 miles or so. Feel free to come inspect this rare, functioning antique. An added bonus is the even rarer Chevrolet temperature gauge that is fixed to the radiator cap. It has fantastic graphics. Most Chevrolets from the 490 series only have a simple screw cap. This gauge is also obviously helpful for keeping an eye on engine temperature. The paint may be original, and is flaking in some spots. If you want it to look perfect, you will have to repaint. There is a six-inch tear in the cloth, convertible roof and other areas of the cloth where it appears a rat may have eaten a few smaller holes. These could easily be mended. The radiator shroud had a bit of welding done on the bottom portion, not long ago to make it stronger, and I ended up painting it. The black paint I used is not a perfect match to the rest of the car, but you probably would not notice it if I didn't tell you. The reproduction 1917 North Carolina license plate does not go with the car. I want something as a keepsake. The buyer must pick this up or have a car transport service come get it. Cash must be provided regardless of who picks this car up.I believe most charge between 900 and 12-hundred dollars. If you have a trailer, you can drive it right up. ALL QUESTIONS MUST BE SENT DIRECTLY TO BCJEFCOAT@YAHOO.COM. I do not like communicating through ebay's filtering software. Or, you may call 919-637-7003.On Dec-18-10 at 06:51:54 PST, seller added the following information: All requested information: ID number, motor number, etc and hopefully a picture of the torn fabric roof will be posted to this listing tonight or tomorrow morning. Thank you, On Dec-18-10 at 15:08:47 PST, seller added the following information: I received a number of requests for car and motor ID information. I looked closely at the motor and firewall today with a flashlight. On the firewall, close to the gas pedal, the ID plate number was: 136739. As for the motor, there were a number of numbers and letters. On top and closest to the fan were K 10-23. This confused me because it seems the 10 is for October and 23 is the date. I looked closely at the "k" wondering if it were an insignia for a year. But no cigar. My eyes are not the best. At the center of the top of the motor was this number: 327772. Also, on top of the motor closest to the cab were three letters, or so it seemed: CWC. For the person who wanted the pictures of the torn roof, I will take and post those pictures tomorrow. I enjoyed gathering this information. Even if it is not of use to you, please inform me what it all means. I am simply curious. Thank you. One more thing, I just got stung with a negative rating on a transaction that never happened, and ebay is allowing it to stand. I previously put this car up for bid to US buyers only, and a person from eastern Europe clicked buy it now. It seemed highly suspicious to me. Yes, I have had scam artists come at me in the past, so I know their game. I told him he was done and relisted the item. So, he gave me a negative feedback. I called ebay today and tried to wade my way through the 20-something types and appeal to their sense of fairness. It did not work. I did not deserve that feedback. On Dec-19-10 at 14:43:19 PST, seller added the following information: I will take pictures of the cloth/leather type roof tomorrow when I assist someone who wants to take a test drive. I am sorry it is taking so long. Life is getting in the way of having fun. I did note today in looking at the roof today that there is one tear about six inches long that happened when I pushed the car into a garage. It just barely caught the door. There is another hole that is circular, and about two inches across. Furthermore, a dirt dober or dirt diver, depending on what part of the country you live in, made a nest in one area. But it did not eat through the top at all. It could easily be knocked off. Overall, it needs a good cleaning. Thank you.On Dec-20-10 at 16:47:08 PST, seller added the following information: I took a prospective bidder for a ride tonight in the 1917 Chevrolet. It ran like a champ. What I was most impressed with was how well the cooling system was doing its job. The mercury on the thermostat on top of the radiator cap indicated the engine temp didn't even climb 1/3 of the way up. By the way, the head lights do work. Once again, a busy day prevented me from taking pictures of the roof. Upon closer inspection, it serves its purpose as is, but there are at least five holes varying from a five inch tear to much smaller tears. These could be mended, or there are companies that specialize in making these roof covers. One more thing, the car comes with a full engine gasket kit in case at some point in the future you want to rebuild the engine. I purchased it because one of the valves was stuck sometime ago, and I thought I would have to pull the head off. If I did that, I figured i would just rebuild the entire motor. But I was able to free up that valve and did not need to do the rebuild.
