Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a well-running 1970 Honda C70M (sometimes referred to as, "CM 70"). It is the USA version of the Honda Super Cub. It is complete, everything works. I have ridden it around my neighborhood and am pleased with the performance, ride, and handling. The classic "Super Cub" looks are very pleasing. This has been my project for the past two years. I purchased the bike in pretty much the same cosmetic condition as it is now, but not running. It turned out that fixing the motor was beyond my mechanical abilities, so I removed it from the frame and sent it out to a rebuild service that specializes in single-cylinder Honda engines. I had it completely rebuilt to "show quality", which included: New Seals New GasketsNew Oil DipstickNew Valve CoversNew Clutch PlatesNew Main Clutch SpringsNew Exhaust/intake SealsNew Piston and RingsNew Wrist pin and KeepersNew Cam Gear and ChainNew Intake & Exhaust ValvesValve Seats Cut/Valves LappedCylinder Rebored and PaintedNew/Replated HardwareHonda Correct Color, Engine side covers repaintingRebuilt Stator assembly including new coils, condenser, points, and electrical plug. In addition, I had the displacement increased to 89cc and a 4th gear added to the transmission (standard is 3-speed). To this I added a brand new carburetor, new fuel lines, fuel filters (in-line), new wheel bearings, new rear wheel bushings, new drive chain, new front brake cable, new throttle and throttle cable, new front headlight (now the bulb is replaceable instead of having to replace the whole thing), new battery, new ignition switch, new fork lock, new keys, new footbar and pegs, and new tires (modern tread 2.75 x 17 on rear and 2.50 x 17 on front). The bike runs well! The engine is still not broken in so I don't know what the top speed is going to be, but with the extra displacement and 4th gear it's probably going to be around 50 mph. The rear shocks squeak a bit but not very loudly, and the right-hand mirror makes noise vibrating at idle (see video), but I wanted to leave the bike as original as possible so I didn't change them. Also, the turn signals don't always blink at a consistent frequency - seems to depend on the overall load on the electrical system. The bike is 100% original except for the parts mentioned above. People familiar with Honda motorcycles of this era will be used to the warm-up period and need to "choke" the engine when cold. By contrast, modern motorcycles (such as the 2010 Honda Super Cub (sold in Japan)) are fuel-injected or have automatic chokes, and solid-state ignition systems: you turn the key, push the "start" button and ride away. Not so with these 40 year-old bikes! They need a little time when cold to warm up and settle-down. Don't buy a bike of this vintage if you like the looks of it but aren't prepared to occasionally have to tweak the idle and have the timing set and valve clearance adjusted - there are new bikes out there (the SYM Symba, for example) that look similar to the Super Cub but have more modern fuel systems, electronics and such that make for a much different ownership experience. I wouldn't rely on a bike of this vintage as a daily-rider unless you have considerable mechanical skills and interest. Please view the photos and video to get an idea of the overall condition. I would say it's "very good" to "excellent". I wouldn't say, "mint", because I have respect for the term, "mint", and this bike definitely does not look like it just rolled out of the showroom - there are signs of age and wear in various places - chromed parts (most notably turn signals and mirrors) may look shiny in the photos but if you get really close you can see that its been gone over (I used fine steel wool) and had previously been weathered; paint, although original and still shiny, has been touched up in various places - notably the front fork, and if you look close you can easily see where; plastic (side covers, legshield and front fender) all have scuffs and minor scratches; seat is very nice but as you can see the "Honda" marking on the back is faded. I'd say this Super Cub looks like you might expect it to in 1971 - 1973 (except for the modern tread tires) if it had been used for occasional transportation in mostly dry weather and parked in a garage when not in use. That is, it's definitely well-preserved for its age with "light" wear, but not without cosmetic flaws. I don't think it would win 1st place in an antique motors show, that is, although it has received numerous "Wow!"s and "Nice!" remarks when I've taken it out. See Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deNMI1gnDUA Included with the motorcycle: I've wired the battery for quick-connect to a battery charger, which is included in the sale. Also included with the bike are the tool kit and owner's manual. Note that the owner's manual did not come with the bike but I found one for that model/year on ebay. I'm not sure whether the tool kit is original or not - it came with the bike and looks old, though. Inspection: If you wish to inspect the bike before bidding, please contact me to set up an appointment. Location is Pennington, New Jersey, 08854. Questions? Let me know and I'll be glad to get back to you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Terms: Sold as is, where is.
