Vehicle Detail
We have sold are home in Black Butte Ranch, OR and, thus, have a need to sell our two cars here as we prepare for a move to Europe in the fall. While I am also selling a Mercedes-Benz 300TE, this listing is for our 1992 Saab 900 base model. My son acquired this car here in Oregon in the summer of 2009 and drove it back to Massachusetts for his senior year at his boarding school, and then drove it back out here for the summer. Now a freshman at a school and as a reward for his earning an athletic scholarship to a good school, we bought him a sports car. (Hey, it's cheaper than paying education.) Now some history about the car. This car was our neighbor's in San Francisco and has always been a California car. He is a meticulous man almost to the point of pathology and he satisfied me that the car had been well kept and serviced regularly by Planet Saab in San Francisco, so I bought it for my son to keep out here in Oregon during his time back over the summer. He has driven this car and reports getting 32mpg on the highway and mid-twenties city. The car is solid, drives well, takes on cars easily during the pass, has no clutch or gear issues, and is a non-turbo, which I knew from having owned one in the eighties would run forever without the breakdowns prone to the turbos. Unlike Volvos, there is plenty of pep in this car and I would describe it's driving characteristic as peppy and kind of sitting up high and feeling safe. What I like about this car as well is that unlike my old one, this one has the durable cloth seats which make the interior seem lightly used. The leather on older Saabs is a nightmare to maintain, and they all crack, get flat, chunk out and look like beaters. The car runs on Michelin tires which have plenty of tread left; drives straight and solid; shifts easily and otherwise performs as it should. The only issues with the car is that the air-conditioning does not work (not sure it has one being a base model); sometimes you have to hold the turn signal lever in place while turning; a rock hit the front windshield last year and caused some small cracks on passenger side well-above eye level so he just left it be; and finally there is a depressed scratch, or small dent, just under passenger outside mirror (see pic). There may also be the occasional scratch or small sap mark, and a little piece of trim stripping has broken off on the front bumper on the driver's side. The dash also has some customarily Swedish small cracks. This car has a very large trunk that could accommodate several golf bags. The rear seats also fold down and make a nice cargo area or napping area. The car is equipped with electric windows and has a new headliner my nephew from Switzerland put on this summer to thank me for setting him up with golf lessons. He did not get around to covering small areas on the interior of the C-pillar behind the headrests, which is an easy job (please see pics). Also the radio display from the original tape-deck Saab unit does not have a back glow during the night. If I were to keep the car, I'd have a cheap IPod-ported unit with a CD player and new speakers put in. These cars are front-wheel drive and really made for the snow. This car has absolutely no rust and has not seen much snow, being a California car. Many of the Duke stickers you see on the car can be removed, which I realize I forgot to do before snapping pictures for the listing. The car does not leak a drop of oil, and by Saab standards, has a very oil-free engine bay. This example is from the era when Saab and Volvo made cars that went forever. I am listing the 900 at a fair price and is a sound investment for those on a budget who want a safe, simple, easy-to-work-on car with plenty of parts out there to be had far more inexpensively than Volvos of the era. As I stated in my other listing, I choose not to dicker on price and if it doesn't sell I will be donating this car to a Portland charity because I am in need of deductions. The car is at our vacation home 30 miles northwest of Bend, OR inside the gated golf community of Black Butte Ranch. I will be delighted to drive the car to Portland if the buyer is a Portlander. (It's a popular car there.) We are about 30 hours from Portland's PDX airport and 30 minutes from Redmond, OR's RDM airport. If you are a Saab afficionado and wish to fly into either PDX or RDM, there will be no need to taxi as someone will be there to pick you up. Please feel free to ask me any questions you have. Again, this car is solid, doesn't leak oil, has a strong clutch and is really simple with little to go wrong. Thanks and good luck!
