Its SLK roadster is one of those products, and it's one of the Mercedes Benz vehicles that strays from the company's staid image as a builder of practical sedans. It's almost toy-like in size and shape, but with the ability to transform itself from a safe, snug hardtop to a cabriolet in seconds. Mercedes-Benz had something different on tap for 1999: a 2-passenger sports car with a supercharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine. Instead of a soft top, however, the SLK230 has a metal roof that powers down into the trunk for storage, at the touch of a button. The trunk lid opens forward for cargo, and tilts from the rear to raise or lower the top--a task that took about 25 seconds. SLK is powered by a 2.3 liter four cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and 16 valves. Bolted to it is a supercharger (Kompressor in German and the "K" in the suffix SLK) that helps it produce 185 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. At idle, it lopes unobtrusively and in docile fashion, but as the supercharger builds instant pressure when the accelerator pedal is pushed, the exhaust note changes from a low-frequency moan to a brassy wail. Mercedes builds SLKs very stiff using uni-body construction and the ride feels like the car's been carved from a solid block of steel. Underneath is independent suspension front and rear using unequal length upper and lower A-arms up front and a five-link setup in back. The ride is firm, but predictable, with excellent grip and moderate under-steer at its cornering limits. Dual dashboard and dual side-impact airbags, ABS, automatic slip control (traction control) and side-impact door beams are standard on this model. Acceleration off the line is a bit leisurely, but speed gathers quickly once the supercharger hits full puff, at about 3000 rpm. It averages nearly 24 mpg in fast highway driving. Expect 17-18 mpg in city/suburban driving with a light right foot. Though smooth for a four, the engine emits an unbecoming, coarse growl when worked hard This particular SLK is in great shape. Just look at the pictures and judge for yourself. The vehicle is mechanically sound and the interior looks nice. The engine sounds great, it handles and drives superbly and has no problem developing high speeds. Car runs straight as an arrow and tires do not pull in any direction. The car can be exported, transferred and registered in any state.
