Vehicle Detail

Unlike most restoration "projects" that are already all torn to bits missing God knows what and having suffered at the hands of God knows who in its deconstruction this El Camino is nothing but a good solid and complete project car. On top of that it is an original big block 396 El Camino. A little car with some of the best lines ever produced. It's never been hit. Straight body. Floors are in decent shape. Weld up a few pin holes but no full pans need replacing. Unlike most of the old El Caminos that have their rear quarters gone this one does not. It's got a bad spot low rear on a front fender. It's an area that has a commonly available patch panel. Already have the patch panel and it goes with the car. Car also includes a patch panel to repair/replace under the front windshield. It has leaked over the years and needs this panel It's not bad yet. But I'd not do the work without replacing it. 66 396 El Camino. Originally the 325 horse version with a Quadrajet and a Powerglide. Only other factory option is power steering and a column floor shift. Bought this car from older gentleman in central California. Drove it here for most of a year and about 10k miles. It ran quiet, drove very well and was basically without issue for a local driver. It was using a quart of oil in about 700 miles though. So decided to tear the car down for restoration. Engine has been professionally rebuilt and beautifully dressed. Engine work alone cost over $5000. The Powerglide was also rebuilt. The other accessories (alternator, power steering pump, etc) are all new parts also. It comes with a new Edelbrock Quadrajet also. The car is very complete. I'd started collecting parts for the restoration. All those parts go with the car also. Most of the trim for the grill and rest of the nose is NOS. Lower body panels NOS. All new weather stripping. Wheel well moldings. New grill. There's a good set of the original tinted rear and side glass in the parts collection. New shroud. All the parts to put four wheel disc brakes on the car are there and are all new parts. That's everything from the brake booster and master cylinder at one end to the rear calipers and mounting hardware at the other. You'll also see an air conditioning compressor mounted on the engine. I'd planned on installing a "Sure Fit" kit. Among the parts with the car is also an dash from a 66 Chevelle with air conditioning. So you can add the high center duct to make the A/C work better and make it look more like an A/C car. I'd planned on painting the car black and doing the interior in an original black and white color scheme. All the new interior parts and upholstery to completely redo the interior are here. Seat cushions and covers, dash pad, carpet, door panels, headliner and visors. Many many more new or NOS parts all go with car. Door and vent window handles, rechromed bumper, lines and many others. The car is all there and 90% of the parts needed to complete the restoration go with it. There really aren't any substantial parts that aren't there. Plus you get that beautifully rebuilt 396 engine. The engine was rebuilt to the original 396 325 hp specs. Block was only .003 over on its largest hole. So it was only honed. Crank needed to be cut .010-.010 but I had a new steel crank so it was used instead. The original crank goes with the car also. Heads were completely rebuilt. Engine was align bored and balanced. It will be a very very sweet running engine. At some time in the car's life something sort of triangular shape had been set on the original hood. It didn't leave a bend but it did leave a very noticeable indentation. Was an area about 1.5 foot long. To fix that had ordered a brand new hood. You'll see in the pictures the hood still in its original box. It's a correct 66 Chevelle SS hood. These look great on the El Camino. In with all the other parts are the louvers and other parts to complete the SS hood. Once again it's all there. There are many many small parts that go with it. Much more than could be listed. Nothing important is missing and, in fact, nothing at all may be missing. It is a very complete project car that would be a great and easy restoration. Everything from motor mounts to hood and front grill to tail gate hinge bushing kits. A really nice project. Purchase terms will be as follows: $500 deposit via Paypal within 12 hours of the end of the auction. If that's not in the car will be offered to the #2 bidder. Remaining amount due by certified check here within a week of the auction's end. Any suggestions that are variations from this you must discuss with BEFORE the auction ends. I'll work with any shipper you might hire. I'll build a wood crate for the engine and set it in the bed of the El Camino if you like. Will put the transmission there too and safely pack as many other parts in the back or in the cab as can be packed there. I'm guessing it can all go in and with the car. If not, however, will ship anything remaining by UPS. Safest place to ship the new hood is probably bolted right down on the hood hinges where it belongs. If you prefer to come pick up yourself will still help prep all the parts and get things packed and ready to go as much as I can. The car is stored inside. It's not in the way. If you need some time to arrange transport or come to pick up that's fine. It can set right where it is for weeks or months. It's doing no harm and won't be bothered. Have a clear title in hand and it will mail as soon as final payment clears. The car can wait safely until whenever is convenient for you to get it though. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have. On Aug-19-10 at 11:50:34 PDT, seller added the following information: Have had a few questions so will attempt to answer them all here at once: Yes, it is an original 396 car. Yes, it is an original Powerglide car. 396 with a Powerglide wasn't an unusual combination then. The body supports all look good. Even the old body bushings look good for that matter. But the supports are fine. Yes, it has the SS style gauges. Stock. No idiot lights. Yes, the console is all there. No, I have no idea if the clock works. Engine has stock ratio standard rocker arms. Lifters are of course hydraulics. Cam is a Comp Cams CCA-11-234-3. Specs are available at the Comp Cams website but it's a cam that matched up well to the needs of the original 325-350hp specs. It should deliver a good idle, give a very crisp throttle response throughout the cruising and pulling ranges and provide plenty of vacuum for power brakes, cruise control and other accessories. Engine was painted with two coats of VHT "Flameproof Primer" followed by two coats of gun sprayed commercial grade Chevy Orange paint followed by two coats of "Nyalic" treatment and protectant. That combination will look good for years, won't flake and will be very very resilient to oils and other fluids. It should stay very good looking for a very long time.
