Before we start, go ahead and get it out of the way now?use your best Ricardo Montalban accent and say, "Rich Corinthian leather," to yourself. Don't worry, I'll wait. If you were watching any TV at all in the '70s, you undoubtedly saw the ultra-suave actor with the velvet voice pitching Chrysler Cordobas just like this one. Designed to compete with mid-level coupes like the Buick Riviera, Oldsmobile Toronado, and even the Ford Thunderbird, it was Chrysler's "personal luxury" entry. OK, so this one doesn't have the Corinthian leather option (which was really low-quality leather anyway), but a matching fabric that is perfect for this time-warp 1979 Cordoba with only 18,200 miles on the odometer. The Cordobas were handsomely styled cars that were not nearly as excessive as some of the land yachts coming out of the other manufacturers' facilities. Don't get me wrong, this is a big car, but its proportions and restrained use of trim and other flash (those extra taillights on the Toronados or landau bars on the Thunderbirds, for instance), give it a much more cohesive look. And hey, look there! It even has a traditional Chrysler Corporation fender tag (although most reference materials neglect the late-70s Mopar codes): E44318-2 Barrel D32A-727 TorqueFlite Trans SS22 S Car Line: B-body SSpecial Price 222-Door Coupe G9R G = 318 135 HP 1-2BBL 8 CYL 9 = 1979 R = Windsor, ONT, CAN 119964Sequence Number '119964' SR8Paint Code: Regent Red Sunfire Metallic EWR4 Unknown 000Upper Door Frame: Full Door Panel 913Date Built: 9/13/1978 CL3770Order Number: CL3770 SR8Roof Type OR Color: Red V3RVinyl landau roof UBuilt to Specifications for USA Order B10Unknown (perhaps power front disc brakes) 000Full Door Panel 000Full Door Panel 28Unknown K5RUnknown C5760 / 40 Seats w/ Recliner G54Left Hand Outside Mirror - Remote / Chrome G66Unknown (perhaps the pinstripes on the fenders) G76Outside Dual Remote Mirrors H51Single Air /w Heater L31Hood / Fender Mount Turn Signal M25Wide Sill Molding N88Auto Speed Control N94ESA w/ cat/con 1975/up P31Power Windows P41Power Door Locks ENDEnd of Codes If you were shopping for a new car in 1979 and stopped at the Chrysler store, you would have probably found a car just like this sitting on the showroom floor. The paint and bodywork on this car are completely original, which means good panel gaps and a respectable shine to the paint, but nothing like today's base/clear systems. If restorers were really doing their homework, they wouldn't be color-sanding and buffing their paint jobs to perfection, they would leave the as-sprayed just like the Chrysler guys did in 1979. The trim on this car is surprisingly good, especially the chrome which is very, very nice. The tape pinstripes on the flanks emphasize the subtly flared fenders and give the car a sporty appearance, an d 1979 was the second year for stacked rectangular headlamps, which replaced the dated-looking single round units in 1978. The hood ornament is a cool stand-up affair that looks like a Spanish doubloon or something, which I'm sure was the intent of the designers. The lenses all around are in excellent condition, including the cornering lamps up front and the positively giant taillights, which are unblemished. For power, this 'Doba carries the standard 318 cubic inch V8, which cranks out a relatively tame 135 horsepower and 250 pounds of torque thanks to a 2-barrel Holley carburetor. However, it is luxury car smooth and the 318 has proven itself time and time again as a durable, reliable power plant. The engine bay is incredibly well preserved, with only routine service items being replaced. Most of the original details are still present, from decals and paint on the block, to wiring and the air cleaner snorkel. Check out the cool battery box/washer fluid bottle in the left front corner, and the vacuum-referenced "Spark Control System" control box mounted to the side of the air cleaner housing. It's clean and authentic in there?heck, even the paint on the underside of the hood is in outstanding condition, and it runs like new. The transmission is the familiar TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic twisting a 2.73 gear out back, a common luxury car cog that makes for relaxed cruising and decent highway mileage, even with such a big car. Underneath, this car is extremely original, with the only obvious new parts being the true dual exhaust system, including the driver's side catalytic converter. Other than that, however, I'm pretty sure those are factory shocks, factory undercoating on the very solid and rust-free floors, and just regular surface rust that formed before the car was even out the factory door on all the cast iron pieces like the rear end housing. The frame is straight and shows no signs of ever being damaged, and the gas tank is excellent. Tires are recent 205/75/15 whitewall radials on steel wheels with optional wire wheel covers. The matching red cloth interior is pure 1979, and shows you what state-of-the-art really was in the 1970s. It's actually a very driver-oriented environment, with a split bench seat up front divided by a folding armrest, an array of sporty-looking gauges, and everything within easy reach of the driver. The steering wheel is a sporty 3-spoke unit that looks a lot like the "Tuff Wheels" from the earlier 'Cudas and Challengers, while the gauges are nestled into separate round nacelles featuring temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, and an ammeter. To the left of the steering column are the controls for the A/C and rear window defroster, and to the right is the AM/FM stereo radio. In front of the passenger, you'll find a digital clock, which Chrysler refers to as a "chronograph," which, while technically correct, seems a little pretentious if you ask me. Whatever you want to call it, it works just fine. The seats are excellent, with only the slightest signs of wear, and the back seat has probably only carried passengers a handful of time. Carpets and headliner are likewise very, very nice, and the door panels housing the power windows and locks look factory fresh. This car also comes with the original owner's manual and for some reason, a framed photo of Ricardo Montalban standing beside an older 1976 or '77 Cordoba, looking a bit annoyed?maybe it was the end of a long photo shoot and he was tired of saying, "Rich, Corinthian leather?" Nice car? Absolutely. This is unquestionably one of the lowest-mileage, most original and authentic Cordobas in the world. They're comfortable cars, drive well, and offer a lot of luxury for the money. They were lighter and more agile than many of their competitors (I'm looking at you, Lincoln Mark V), and offer more restrained styling if you prefer subtle to glitz. I also kind of like the idea of putting some big horsepower into one of these, so maybe you're a lunatic like I am and might like to build yourself a personal luxury cruise missile or something. With such a clean, original car, the possibilities are endless. Drive it, show it, preserve it, whatever you want?just make sure you enjoy it. Call now!
