If I had to choose just one 3rd Generation F-body to make my own, this would be it, no question about it. Not a stripped down 1LE racer, not an IROC-Z with the L98 motor, not even an early Firehawk. Nope, the baddest of the bad has to be the 1989 Trans Am 20th Anniversary pace car with the turbocharged 3.8 liter V6 from the Buick Grand National. These motors were grossly underrated when they lived in boxy Buicks with mushy suspensions?putting that same motor in a car that actually had the handling and braking to match was creating a weapon that had all the Corvette engineers up in arms for months. The bottom line is that this is the car GM promised the Corvette guys it would never build because it would beat the Corvette up and take its lunch money six days a week and twice on Sunday. OK, to make everyone happy, GM played with the numbers and on paper this car makes about the same amount of horsepower as the Corvette's L98 small block (250 vs. 245), and the same amount of torque (340 lb-ft.), but in reality, the blown V6 was intentionally underrated by the factory. 0-60 times of about five seconds and quarter mile times in the low 13s at more than 100 MPH suggest considerably more than 250 ponies dancing under the hood. No matter, they're just numbers anyway?suffice to say that these Anniversary cars are unquestionably the fastest 3rd generation F-bodies ever built by General Motors. In fact, this IS the fastest Trans Am ever built, period. Yes, that includes the Ram Air IV cars. Sorry guys, but in stock form, this turbo V6 will dust your exotic Ram Air IV car. They were so fast, in fact, that one was selected to pace the Indy 500 that year, and was able to do its duties in stock form, with only the addition of strobe lights and safety harnesses?the first car ever to do so. Impressive, no? This particular turbo Trans Am is number 848 out of 1550 built, and one of only 1324 with T-tops and leather interior. It shows just 3654 miles from new, and is extensively documented in every way, from the original window sticker to PHS documents. The original pace car decals are still rolled up and unused in the original box that came with every one of these cars. In addition, this is one of 150 cars specially selected as an Indianapolis 500 Festival Car for the race. We've had a few of these over the years, including some super low mile cars. A buddy of ours has a never dealer-prepped car with 98 miles on it (I know, he should take it out and enjoy it). So when I heard we were getting a low-mile Indy 500 car, I was curious, but not overly so. After all, it's not a '71 Hemicuda. But when I saw this Trans Am for the first time, I was BLOWN AWAY. This is, without a doubt, the best '89 Trans Am I've seen since, well, 1989. It looks like it was just walked down the assembly line by the President of General Motors himself. The car is like a piece of fine jewelry. I really like the white over camel color combination, especially with the gold lace style alloy wheels. Actually, it isn't really white, more like a light cream color instead of refrigerator white. It's elegant, not plain. Condition-wise, this car is about as nice as a 20-year-old car can be. It has clearly been loved and protected its entire life and has been stored in a climate controlled environment since new. Glass, rubber, and other bits and pieces, including the special Indianapolis Motor Speedway badges on the lower rocker panels and the 'Turbo Trans Am" badges on the fenders, are like new. This Trans Am has never seen a drop of rain since it rolled off of the assembly line. Under the hood you'll find an immaculate engine bay housing the turbocharged and intercooled 3.8 liter V6. Even after its duty in the Buick Grand National, the engine was further fortified for use in the Trans Am, including a nodular iron crankshaft and upgraded cylinder heads. Huge fuel injectors supply fuel, and the control system uses mass-air sensing and a knock sensor to optimize fuel and spark for maximum power, all pretty sophisticated stuff for 1989. The first thing I noticed on this car was the massive radiator and cooling fans, which help keep the boosted engine cool under high speed operation (such as you'd find at, say, the Indianapolis 500). All the equipment under there is factory original, including the trick plug wires that say "Trans Am 20th Anniversary" on them. All the original heat shielding is still in place around the turbo, the intake hose hasn't been cooked by heat, and the hood insulation is in excellent condition. I know it runs perfectly because the owner drove it here yesterday, T-tops off, enjoying the spring weather we've been having lately. This is not one of those cars that has been sitting for two decades slowly rotting, it has been properly maintained and exercised since new. The only transmission available with the turbo motor was the 200-4R 4-speed automatic, which served admirably behind the same engine in the Buick Grand National. Durable, with quick shifts and a decent overdrive for high speed action, it's in factory fresh condition here. The rest of the chassis is as new throughout, from the shocks and struts to the 12-inch 1LE race-spec brakes, which might even still be sporting their original brake pads. The 16-inch wheels are unblemished, and the original 245/50/16 Goodyear Gatorback tires look like new. Some of the "experts" out there think that the center caps are incorrect, but guess what? The "experts need to go back to school. Not only are they correct for the car, but they are the same center caps shown in Pontiac's original brochure for the car. They are also identical to the center caps on the 955 mile car we sold yesterday for $38K. Sounds like there's some guys out there running around with the wrong center caps on their cars! The tan leather interior is the ultimate expression of Pontiac's design philosophy in the 1980s: sporty, with a LOT of buttons. There are a dozen buttons on the steering wheel alone! The Turbo Trans Ams came only one way: loaded, and this car has everything they could throw at an F-body in 1989. Even things like power seats, a power antenna, a power trunk release, and an AM/FM cassette stereo with equalizer were included. Of course, for $31,223 in 1989 dollars, I guess you should get everything but the kitchen sink?for comparison's sake, my 1993 Mustang 5.0L with everything except leather seats stickered for less than $15,000 when I bought it new. The entire interior is in outstanding condition, with no notable wear on the seats or carpet. The original weather seals are excellent, and the T-tops are stored in the perfect trunk compartment in like-new bags designed just for this purpose. Everything works properly, there are no squeaks or rattles in this tight car, and it even smells new. Sitting in this Trans Am is to go back in time, no question about it. Documentation is substantial. Items include: Original window sticker Original title Original 1989 Trans Am brochure Original 20th Anniversary box that contains the owner's manual, pace car decal set, key chain and a Pontiac cassette tape still wrapped in plastic. Original temporary license tag Original order form and purchase receipt Original build sheet We also have PHS documents that include press releases. If there's one 1980s car that I can practically guarantee will have future collectable value, this is it. Not a Corvette, not a 1LE Camaro, not even the badass Buick GNX can match the unique combination of history, documentation, performance, and rarity that comes standard with these 20th Anniversary Trans Ams. Very few can match the low mileage claims on this car, and the complete documentation package makes this one perfect for an investment. Add in the fact that they're an absolute blast to drive and look awesome makes them almost a sure bet for future appreciation. Top it off with the absolute pristine condition of this immaculate example and you have the ONE you need to get NOW. If this is your kind of car, I urge you to call right away. Call now!
