The photos speak for themselves....... History: You are bidding on a Generation 2, Series 4 (1986–1988) Mazda RX-7 turbocharged model, known as the Turbo II in the American market that came stock with 182 hp. The second generation RX-7, still known as the Savanna RX-7 in Japan, featured a complete restyling reminiscent of the Porsche 944. Mazda's stylists, led by Chief Project Engineer Akio Uchiyama, focused on the Porsche 944 for their inspiration in design because the new car was being styled primarily for the American market, where the majority of first generation RX-7's had been sold. This strategy was chosen after Uchiyama and others on the design team spent time in the United States studying owners of earlier RX-7's and other sports cars popular in the American market. The Porsche 944 was selling particularly well at the time and provided clues as to what sports-car enthusiasts might find compelling in future RX-7 styling and equipment. Handling was much improved, with less of the oversteer tendencies of the prior generation. The rear end design was vastly improved from the prior generation’s live rear axle to a more modern, Independent Rear Suspension (rear axle). Steering was more precise, with rack and pinion steering replacing the old recirculating ball steering. Disc brakes also became standard, with some models (GXL, GTU, Turbo II, Convertible) offering four-piston front brakes. Mazda also introduced Dynamic Tracking Suspension System (DTSS) in the 2nd generation RX-7. The revised independent rear suspension incorporated special toe control hubs which were capable of introducing a limited degree of passive rear steering under cornering loads. The DTSS worked by allowing a slight amount of toe-out under normal driving conditions but induced slight toe-in under heavier cornering loads at around 0.5 G's or more; toe-out in the rear allows for a more responsive rotation of the rear, but toe-in allowed for a more stable rear under heavier cornering. The Turbo II uses a turbocharger with a twin scroll design. Engineered to cancel the turbo lag at low engine speeds is the smaller primary chamber; at higher revolutions the secondary chamber is opened pumping out 33% more power then the naturally aspirated counterpart. The Turbo II also has an air-to-air intercooler that has its own intake on the hood. The Car: Meticulously maintained by an RX-7 fanatic. Latest owner (3rd overall per AutoCheck) purchased the vehicle in April 2008 after an exhaustive 2-year search to find the cleanest, most original Turbo II model he could find. The car was previously owned by a Kentucky farmer (60+ year old) as far back as records indicate, weekend driven and kept covered in a barn with several other pristine, high performance vehicles. By looking at this vehicle inside, outside and underside I can’t imagine it was ever driven in harsh weather. It is in fantastic condition for a 22-year old car! Upon returning the vehicle to Florida from Kentucky it was immediately brought to the local Mazda dealership for inspection and any maintenance items taken care of including: Mazda ‘Full Circle Inspection’ including Turbocharger and Engine spec confirmation Oil and filter change Shifter spring, bushing and boot replacement Manual transmission fluid and service Rear differential fluid and service Fuel filter replacement (inline & gas tank) Belts (3)If you are looking at this auction you know how special and highly rare a near original RX-7 Turbo II can be and once the rotary bug bites you, it’s hard to resist increasing the vehicle’s performance. To that end, this vehicle has had the following tasteful upgrades professionally installed to increase engine and braking performance over stock (over $3,000 spent in the past 5,000 miles): Racing Beat exhaust system (the best there is for Mazda’s, sounds amazing and adds 60hp) K&N performance air filter (adds 5hp) Cross-drilled and slotted “black” brake rotors all around Ceramic brake pads all aroundThe Story: Having been the proud and prior owner of several Japanese High Performance (JHP) vehicles in the past, I am very familiar with their quality, reliability and downright fun to drive factor. With this in mind I set out to locate an older, low mileage, well maintained, as close to stock JHP sportscar that I could find and something that I yearned for in my youth (300ZX Turbo, Supra Turbo, RX-7 Turbo.... you get the idea!). I searched for months to find this car; when I saw the low miles and unbelievable condition of this RX-7 Turbo II and drove it.... I simply had to have it. Upon revealing my “new toy” to my lovely wife and informing her of what I paid for it, she quite nearly, well....... you get the picture. Que up the "sad trombone" for me. If I plan on remaining happily married to the greatest girl in the world, the car MUST GO!! My loss is your gain if you are looking for a very nice, very tight, very near original and fun RX-7. I have personally driven this car to 120mph on the Interstate and it tracks straight and true, is incredibly quick and stops on a dime. I see no signs of paint work (other than some touch-up here & there), no rust, no rubber or trim rot anywhere (the door seals are so perfect and tight that you have to crack a window to reduce interior pressure to close the hatch without slamming it!)..... the car is so clean, the paint is so nice and the interior is like new. I don't think anyone has ever sat in the passenger seat!! If I were to keep this car for the long term I would bring it to a Mazda dealership for a full service maintenance checkup to have a starting point going forward, spoon on a fresh set of high-performance summer tires (Hankook Ventus EVO-12’s are great and very reasonable!) and drive the heck out of it, that's it!! The car will be fully detailed for the winning bidder at my expense and for your enjoyment. I have a crazy low reserve on the vehicle considering what it is, the history, the condition, upgrades, super low mileage, etc. Known Issues: Check my 100% feedback. I only sell items the right way and describe everything that I am aware of, notice, or think might add or subtract value from an item. I attempt to describe all vehicles as honestly and accurately as possible. The windshield wipers operate on 2 of 3 speeds. The wheels have light "wheel weight" blemishes. The OEM cassette deck and CD player may or may not work and I won’t even check as it isn’t worth it; I’ve always found it best in these older cars w/ OEM stereo’s to just listen to the radio (AM/FM radio, speakers and electric antennae operate as normal), or install a new stereo system altogether as all the tiny motors in these decks go bad if not used regularly. There are two very small paint blemishes (surface).... one on the passenger side lower door jam and one on the leading edge of the sunroof gasket, both are smaller than an M&M (plain, not peanut!). There are 2 small dents in the hood. I was told the former owner (the farmer) had barn cats; they got up in the shelves and knocked a couple paint cans on it while it was covered. I believe the windshield and passenger window have been replaced at some point in the past 22-years. A few very small dings, normal front-end and lower panel stone chips (common on any vehicle within 1 hour of being driven off the lot) with most touched up. Light rub on driver’s seat left entry bolster (common to any low-slung sports car - no rips or tears, just a rub). Rear hatch window gasket has typical very slight shrinkage where the gasket ends meet up, affects nothing. Please see the photos where I point out some of the things I mention; some don’t even show up in the photos as they are so slight. The vehicle has a 100% clean AutoCheck Report and Title. Check out my 100% perfect feedback, no disappointments here. Good luck and Happy Bidding!! Please Scroll Down to See Photos.
