Ford Mustangs are great and all, but what's a guy to do who doesn't want the same car half a million of his closest friends have, but doesn't have a huge pile of money to spend? How about a Roush Stage 1 Mustang? Great looks, a little extra horsepower, and an impeccable pedigree that almost guarantees future collectability, it's all included as standard equipment with a Roush piece. Better yet, this is one of only 61 Roush Sport Mustangs built in 2006 in Torch Red with a gray leather interior and manual transmission. This 2006 Ford Mustang Sport has the Roush Stage 1 package as an added bonus. The Sport package included: Custom front fascia with fog lamps Rocker panels Rear valences Rear wing Emblems ROUSH banner on the windshield, High performance exhaust system with polished tips Embroidered floor mats ?all for the relatively reasonable price of $6201.00. The original buyer of this car wasn't satisfied with that, however, and generously loaded up a few additional options on his new Roush Mustang including: White racing stripes with front window decal Mustang white face gauge cluster Roush Mustang front chin spoiler Roush Mustang interior trim kit Roush Mustang rear quarter window louvers Roush aluminum manual pedal kit Roush shift knob Of course, these goodies added another $2156 to the list price of his new Mustang. But wait! He wasn't quite done. Sometime shortly thereafter, he upgraded the Sport to a Stage 1 package with the addition of Roush-design 18-inch chrome wheels, an interior dashboard medallion, plus the official Stage 1 logo on the rear decklid. Finally, it was finished with a Roush cold air intake kit, which adds a few horsepower and a rumbling intake soundtrack, which is worth every penny. With just 4634 miles on the odometer, this car is still in showroom-new condition throughout. Never intended as a daily driver, this car was a cherished collectible from day one, and has probably never seen anything more than a brush with a stray sprinkler system, let alone any inclement weather. The Roush body kit emphasizes the Mustang's lean flanks, giving it an aggressive stance that was bred on the racetrack (since that's where Jack Roush works). The Torch Red paint is outstanding, and compared to some of the late-80s cars we've had in here lately, you can see how far factory paint technology has come?it's really, really nice. The Roush stripes were expertly applied and look brilliant against the red paint, not cartoonish or excessive. It's like the body was made to wear stripes. The Roush-made parts, including the front and rear fascias and rocker panel moldings, look completely OEM and fit right without that aftermarket "close enough" vibe that you get from a lot of bolt-on kits (after all, Roush is an OEM supplier). There aren't any nicks or stone chips on the Roush body panels (or the factory ones, for that matter), which suggests that this car was very gently used. Under the hood, the sturdy Ford 4.6 liter V8 churns out more than 300 horsepower thanks to 3-valve heads as well as the Roush intake and exhaust modifications. It was awesome that Ford engineers were able to take a completely new overhead cam engine with not one part interchangeable with the older pushrod V8s, but have it still sound like a Ford V8. Mustangs have always had a unique sound, and this one is no different. The engine bay is detailed and still 100% factory-issue. No rain or snow means all the aluminum bits are still clean, the plastic hasn't faded, and there is no road grime anywhere. And you've undoubtedly noticed Jack Roush's signature on the radiator shroud?a nice touch! The engine drives through a 5-speed manual transmission, which changes gears thanks to the positive action of the Roush shifter. Out back, a set of 3.55 gears provides excellent off-the-line acceleration, and makes the overdriven 5th gear more than useful on the highway?in fact, I think 3.55s offer just about the most ideal combination of performance and cruising abilities, so much so that I installed them in my own Mustang more than 15 years ago! I think it goes without saying that the rest of this car is just as clean. These cars were never built as show pieces at the factory, but they were clean and fresh when they rolled out the door, and this one remains factory fresh today. As clean as the engine bay is, the rest of the chassis is equally clean and well-preserved. There are disc brakes at all four corners, and this car features anti-lock brakes and traction control as well. And although Ford kept the Mustang's live axle, it isn't a penalty anymore, because engineers have pretty much tamed its antics through careful suspension tuning. Of course, a big part of that are those gorgeous 18-inch chrome Roush wheels, a bold 5-spoke design that helps keep the brakes cool and looks awesome against the Torch Red paint. The Cooper performance radials are brand new and show almost zero wear today. Inside, the interior is all stock Mustang, swathed in dark charcoal leather. Along with the comprehensive redesign of the body, the interior got a huge makeover as well, resulting in what many folks think of as the best interior ever in a Mustang, and I'm inclined to agree. With the power driver's seat in this car, it's incredibly easy to get comfortable, and the retro-styled dashboard is full of useful information. In this particular car, you'll also note that white-faced gauges have been added, as well as Jack Roush's signature that lights up with the rest of the gauges at night?a cool touch! Carbon fiber appliqués have been added to the dash and console, which breaks up that ocean of dark leather and plastic, and the billet shifter falls easily to hand. The leather is in as-new condition with only the slightest signs of use, and everything looks like it's never been touched. Well, maybe the passenger's side airbag cover has been touched, because Jack Roush signed it, as well. Paperwork comes with the car, including the original Ford window sticker and the additional Roush window sticker that includes the Sport package and related options. There is also a Roush Owner's Manual and a whole pile of Roush promotional brochures and product catalogs. There are plenty of Mustangs out there, but very few Roush-massaged pieces?as I mentioned, this is one of only 61 in this configuration. Package cars like this are far more than the sum of their parts, with professional factory-type construction and components. Immaculately maintained with killer looks, a nice upgrade in performance and a great pedigree, this is a lot of Mustang for your money.
