For sale is a 1995 Ford Escort full electric conversion. The seller finished the conversion nearly by himself approximately one year ago. The car will be sold as is, and the seller assumes no responsibility for the vehicle once sold. The drive power comes from a Crown 36v-48v electric forklift drive motor coupled directly to the transmission. Although the car is a standard 5 speed, there is no clutch, but shifting is not any different and is still as smooth as if the clutch is still there. The batteries are four 12v deep cycle marine batteries wired in series to achieve 48v. In line with the motor and the batteries lies a Curtis brand power controller from a 48v golf car which controls how fast the car goes based upon the accelerator pedal. Although the car has no power steering, it goes virtually unnoticed as soon as the car moves, and if power steering is later desired all hookups to reinstall the pump have been left intact and tied up as to ensure their preservation for future use. There is also no air conditioning in the car, but if air conditioning was desired it is possible to reinstall the compressor. Coming from Kansas, the car does however have a heater. The heater plugs into a power inverter (not installed in the car) or a wall outlet and operates much like the heater would have when the car ran on gasoline. The main difference in the heater is that there is a lighted switch to flip in order to allow a relay to function to allow the heater to warm up. Modifications have been made to the dashboard to allow the driver to see the voltage of the main battery pack and how many amps are flowing from the batteries to the power controller. The ammeter and volt meter sit in place of the oil pressure gauge and the fuel gauge on the left side of the dashboard, and are the two illuminated blue gauges seen in the pictures. The car is still equipped with power brakes that operate via a 12v vacuum pump which does not operate the whole time the car is on, and can be operated for a very short period of time without power under stored vacuum pressure in the white canister seen under the hood. A separate 12v lawn tractor battery operates the car's basic 12v systems (headlights, turn signals, brake lights, etc...) as well as the vacuum pump for the power brakes. The car is fully licensed, insured, inspected by the Kansas Highway Patrol and has a clear Kansas title.
