I'm not the kind of guy who boasts about his accomplishments, but bear with me for a moment. Every week, I look at the cars we debut here at Best of Show Automotive, and pick the one that I think will sell first, often wagering something like a few dozen donuts for the guys in the shop. Sometimes it's easy and the choice is obvious, and other times, not so much. Then there are the cars that come through that I think will NEVER sell, and although I don't say as much, I keep track of those cars in my head. So imagine my surprise when that 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass we had, complete with wire wheels and tufted velour seats, sold within a few short weeks of its debut to a very happy new owner. Clearly someone knew something I didn't, and I'm pleased to admit that I was wrong in that case. Never again. This week, we're proud to present another spectacular G-body coupe, this time a 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais with just 18,963 original miles and factory T-tops. This one is a lot sportier than that '87, with the factory Rallye wheels, white letter tires, the blacked out headlight and grille treatment, and a somewhat performance-oriented interior with a console. If the Grand National is Buick's coolest coupe from the '80s, I'm going to call this Calais Oldsmobile's most desirable piece from that era. Heck, this car is so nice, I even like the color. Oldsmobile had about six different names for "tan" in 1984, and I'm sure they sold well, while I'm not usually a fan of earth tones, it really works on this car. Maybe it's the color-keyed wheels or the contrast of the dark top and interior with the dark trim on the front end, but it looks much, much better than you'd expect if you heard the words "tan Oldsmobile." As a low-mileage original, the body panels are original GM steel, and that's excellent factory paint on just about every square inch of it. I can't find any signs of repairs or touch-ups, and even the usual locations behind the wheel wells or on the nose, there are no notable blemishes. Someone definitely loved this car from a very early age. Chrome and trim, and there's quite a bit, are excellent. The grille and front headlight surrounds are a cool mixture of matte black and chrome which give the Olds a sporty appearance, but didn't rock the traditional boat, either. The padded landau top is always a priceless addition on these cars, and combined with the optional (and beautifully preserved) T-tops, has to be a very rare configuration. Lenses and emblems are all excellent, from the stand-up hood ornament to the tiny Oldsmobile rocket emblems in the center of each well-preserved taillight. The polished stainless steel rocker moldings are beautiful, without so much as a spot of road tar marring the finish. The plastic bumper covers show no signs of cracking, and that's really rare, no matter how few miles the car has. Under the hood you'll find GM's venerable small block V8, this time the Y-code 5.0 liter V8 with a 4-barrel Rochester carburetor that cranked out a 1984-appropriate 140 horsepower. The engine bay is about as factory original as any car you're going to see, with only routine service items being replaced in the past 26 years. Fortunately, the mechanics decided to re-use many of the factory clamps and brackets, preserving the OEM look and feel throughout. And again, the absence of dirt and grime suggests that not only has this car never seen foul weather, but someone was meticulous about maintenance?this is one clean car! I caught some flak in my last Oldsmobile Cutlass write-up when I dreamed of stuffing a big block 455 into that '87, but on this car, I think I'd probably leave well enough alone and maybe do some subtle, invisible modifications instead. This is, after all, a GM small block, and there's an army of aftermarket parts suppliers waiting to help you get the most out of it. Living behind the V8 engine is the tried-and-true 200R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, and it works like new. With a fairly steep first gear to launch the car with authority despite the highway-oriented 2.73 rear gears, and an overdrive to keep things efficient and quiet on the highway, this transmission is a reliable partner. The rest of the chassis is like the engine bay: clean, unmolested, with only basic service items having received attention. I'm guessing the exhaust is original, the floors are clean (what else would you expect), and the suspension still sports its original shocks. I mentioned the Rallye wheels earlier, and the classic Oldsmobile design really gives the car a sporty edge. They wear 215/70/15 Goodyear Eagle ST tires, which are quiet and long-wearing, but look sporty with raised white letters. Perfect on a car like this! Climb inside and I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised?I know I was. First, there are two genuine bucket seats separated by an honest-to-God console with a floor shifter. Like the exterior, the mocha brown interior is not nearly as dated as it sounds, and I actually really like it. It feels upscale and rich in a way that gray or red just couldn't, and it works well with the faux wood paneling on the dash and console. And speaking of the dash, yes, that's a real tachometer nestled into the round gauge port next to the speedometer, and four auxiliary gauges on the other side. No rectangular bar-type speedometer here with idiot lights for everything else, but a real, functional driver's environment. Of course, being an Oldsmobile, you know there's a good dose of luxury to go with the sport, and that includes standard A/C, cruise control, interval wipers, power windows, power locks, and a rear defroster. The seats are all-day comfortable in a way that form-fitting buckets can never be, and the carpets are excellent. The T-tops, as I mentioned, are in great condition and I think that's why this passenger compartment looks so bright despite the dark fabrics. Look a little closer and you'll see that there's a power driver's seat, which is always a nice option. Bottom line? This is a really nice interior inside a really nice car. Documentation includes all the original manuals, including the warranty booklet, owner's manual, service and maintenance manual, and the sound system manual supplement. We also have the instruction sheet for buckling the lap/shoulder belts. Never again will I underestimate the appeal of these cars, because honestly, I really like this one. It's sporty and elegant, and not a parody of itself like so many '80s cars become after the passage of the years. The V8 under the hood is sharp enough to make it competitive with modern traffic, and easily upgraded if that's how you roll. The body's condition can't be faulted, and the interior looks spectacular. For the money, this is an incredibly solid, straight, complete, usable car that obviously has a lot of fans. Drive it as-is to your local cruise night with the T-tops off, and watch what happens. I bet you'll have more than a few guys coming up to you and offering you cash for it, and telling you about the one they had that they never should have sold. And if you're one of those guys, well, here's your second chance. Call now!
