Start Slideshow Stop Slideshow Next Image Previous Image The R129 was based on the shortened floorpan of the Mercedes-Benz W124 and featured many innovative details for the time, for instance electronically controlled damping (optional) and a hidden, automatically extending roll-over bar. The R107's rather dated rear diagonal swing axle gave way to a modern multi-link axle. The number of standard features was high, with electric action for the windows, mirrors, seats and hood. The 1991-2000 Mercedes-Benz SL, which was Mercedes' top of the line convertible, bowed for 1991 with 300SL and 500SL iterations. These were two-ton cars, which contributed to solidity but that hampered acceleration with the 300's 228-horse 3.0-liter inline 6. The 500's 322-horse 5.0-liter V-8 had considerably more pep. With the most horsepower was the huge V12 that was producing 389 horsepower. With only 686 made and a base price of almost $120,000 these weren’t for everyone. Originally sold in Las Vegas, the car spent its life there until 2001 when it went to Colorado Springs Colorado where it was only driven around 10,000 miles in the 8 years of ownership. In 2008 the car came to Illinois where we purchased it. Now showing only 56,000 original miles, the car is in excellent condition and is loaded with options. Outside, the paint is in excellent condition with no major imperfections to be found. The only spots are a few very small rock chips to the hood and front bumper as would be expected from a 17 year old car. The removable hard top is in great condition as is the soft top which looks new. All the glass is perfect with no chips or cracks that we have found. Inside, the seats are both in excellent condition with no major wear to be found. There is some wear to the drivers seat side bolster but it is not torn. The passenger seat is nearly perfect as well as the carpet, hardtop headliner, dash and wood trim. There has been an updated sound system installed in the car that sounds great. It includes an Alpine AM/FM CD player with a 6 disc in the trunk and updated Boston Acoustic speakers and an Alpine amp behind the seats. In the center console, there has been a K40 radar installed. The big V12 under the hood runs great. On the road the car is a monster and will accelerate past 100 mph as fast as most cars accelerate past 50. These Benz’s are made to run well over 100 mph on the German Autobahn all day long and this car is very capable of doing such a thing! Under the hood is very clean and detailed and appears completely stock. The chrome 18” wheels around the car look good but do have some pitting. Most notably to the front, passenger side wheel. The car does come with all original manuals and leather bound Mercedes booklet. The current mileage shows 56,840 and is actual. This represents only 3,400 miles per year, leaving plenty of room to drive and enjoy with minimal upkeep. The car does have a clean Carfax and three owners. This is a fantastic driving SL Mercedes with a V12. These cars are extremely rare to find in this year and low mileage. The car is being sold on a clean Illinois title.
