Vehicle Detail

No one wants a car with a story. This is the history of me and this car. I graduated from high school in 1967. I've owned a lot of supercars, always more than one and always long term. In the late 80's, I discovered 5.0 Mustangs, then Special Service Mustangs, and I had to have one. I tried to order one for at least two years and could not. Finally I found one for sale in Pennsylvania. It had not been used as a cop car. Someone had gotten it out of the factory and was not happy with the paint. The dealer repainted it, he still was not happy and they put it on the used car lot. The second owner drove it, enjoyed it, then decided to sell it after he ordered a new Harley. I was disappointed that the car had been repainted and had the original tires replaced. The second owner had used all five tires on the car. There was no reason the tires should have needed replacement with the low mileage the car had. The replacements, Comp TA's speed rated, nice looking, but have always been disappointing. About 4 or 5 years ago I moved the GT-4 spare tire to the correct wheel for the trunk. The spare tire wheel has a special label. At that time I removed all weights, detailed all wheels and tires and rebalanced with weights taped down on the inside. I have a set of Pony wheels (93 Saleen take offs), the car is dreamy to drive with these wheels on the car. I would drive this car anywhere, with the Comp TA's. They just are simply nothing special. I think this is a plus, the tires are date coded 25th week 94, they're safe to drive anywhere, but you might as well get what you want. On the subject of long distance, that's mostly what I did with this car. I live in Minneapolis and love to go to car shows and auctions in Chicago. The second to last trip I took was to Detroit for the Woodward Cruise. I was going to put the car on Ebay after the trip, with under 60,000 miles on it, but drove it to Michigan for the Pure Stock Drags two weeks later. I am an over maintainer. I've changed the trans fluid at least three times. Coolant at least once a year. These cars have a valve of some sort, in the heater hose that makes it hard to top off. Some sort of surge device. I always make sure I get as much coolant back in as I get out. I always take the two radiator hoses off, wash in dish soap, and reinstall with coolant and 50% distilled water. I don't try to get plugs out of the block. I get as much coolant out as I can with the radiator hoses off and change often. I change oil and grease in the fall and before a trip. I also remove the battery cable before a long trip,(they say it resets the computer for economy). I've gotten as much as 29 mpg on the highway, but always at least 26. Besides fluids, all I have ever changed is the front rotors and spark plugs. I changed the rotors because they were bad, not because they were worn out. It runs very well. It's been years since I've had the air conditioner serviced and it's very cold. A few years back the power steering leaked a bit, but I added a second hose clamp and it pretty much stopped. Once in awhile I have to add about a shot glass full of fluid, when I'm checking before a trip. It leaks a little and should be looked at. I would also repack front wheel bearings. I'm going to try to list the shortcomings that I can think of. It has a small dark mark in the middle of the driver seat (see photo). Also there are three holes on passenger side of counsel (I think for an early 90's phone). Also an antenna on the trunk lid. The car has the bonding strap option. I hope you can see one the bonding straps for the engine in the photo of the oil cooler. The left hood bonding strap is missing a label, no big deal, but I wish it was still there. The right bonding strap on trunk lid has come loose at bottom and is a little frayed. If you look at the one on the left, it looks good, but if you look close it has two plastic ties on it. If the right one had one more tie and was reattached I think it would look good. Another shortcoming is a rip in the sheet metal in left door jamb. See photo with DSO label. Also no electric door lock on left door. The left door latch stopped working, after removing seats and door panel, I was unable to get the door open. Ford's method to fix this is to break the latch. They broke it for me. The inner door by the latch was bent and restraightened, leaving the small rip you see. I use the electirc door lock to lock passenger door and a key from outside the car to lock the other. You do not want this latch to stop working. Recently I removed the left inner fender to help a dent guy remove a dent. Thirty bucks cash and you can't see where it was. While I had it out I cleaned it up, anything greasy with a little engine cleaner on a rag, then washed all with dishsoap. I also washed the other three wells wiht dishsoap while rotating tires. The bottom side of this car is very nice, No rust. I have never driven this car in the winter, and there has even been years I have not dirven it at all. To end, I think it is a plus that not much on the car has changed, except for rotors and spark plugs, it's just the way it came from the factory. I thought I heard an exhaust leak and have taken it into an exhaust shop, but they couldn't find any leaks. As a new owner, you can do whatever maintenance you like, modify, whatever way you would like and enjoy. I know that I sound like an old man, talking about gas mileage and car maintenance. I have and have always had fast cars, and this car is fun to drive fast! It's also a world class car - as efficient as a Honda or Toyota and able to get to 140 mile per hour in 20 seconds.
