Vehicle Detail
1967 Porsche 912 5-speed, Matching Numbers, European Model Serial# 353231 / Assembled by Porsche at Zuffenhausen, late '66 as a '67 model Engine# 837035 / "365B" T6, 90 BHP DIN, assembled early '67 Runs/Drives - Needs Work to Restore The proverbial barn find -- We went to see a building full of old Saabs, and MGs and Triumphs, but we discovered this slightly forlorn treasure instead. Driven in and parked seven or eight years ago, it sat untouched since. After having had much money invested in it, the owner lost interest without ever getting it all worked out. We trailered it home, got it running, washed off the dust, and present it to you here. This is a Euro-market model, with KPH speedo, and nice original Bosch headlamps: NOT sealed beams, and with the correct smooth, raked profile instead of the sharp-edged later Euro lamps typically substituted. Where the amber rear signals lenses went, we can only guess, but they should be re-installed by the new owner to make this all-Euro in appearance. It has the 5-gauge instrument panel, which was still optional in '67. Many people feel this is the nicest looking set of instruments, with a neat outdoor thermometer on the left, and the green graphics nicely bridging between the vintage 356 look and the later classic 911 style. The 5-speed and pre-emissions-control engine complete the picture: For most folks, this is the vintage and spec to have in a 912. Let's get the Ugly Stuff out of the way first. Although most of this car is impressively solid, the floorpan is a total loss and needs replacement; if this scares you, turn the page now...This car is not for you. The body seems to have a full-bondo-jacket beneath the thick red paint job, and the doors have a poor fit, requiring (at the least) adjusting the striker plates or latches. Light damage on the front bumper; This did not distort the bodywork behind the bumper or "spring" the structure. The driver's door got bent because somebody backed up with the door open and caught a tree, fouling the front fender: This is revealed in a dent and missing paint around where the metal flexed. Brakes need a rebuild: The pedal goes to the floor. We didn't even bleed them, they've been sitting so long we just know the calipers need a rebuild at this stage. They don't hang up, and the car can be driven a bit using the handbrake to stop. Throw-out bearing seems sticky, and we have to use a foot to pull the clutch pedal up for full "bite"; This is surely just a lubrication issue. On the Plus Side: Many of the usual rust areas are very solid. This includes: Solid trunk pan (even under the battery tray), fenders tops (including shock mounts, seams and headlamp buckets), torsion bar mounts (front & rear), and the front tow hook. Besides the typical floor pan problems, rust is not out of control on this car. Even the fender lips are solid and round, apparently all steel without any filler. The motor sounds healthy and pulls strongly: It was allegedly rebuilt, with new crank bearings, oversized pistons & barrels and one rebuilt head. There are no receipts to confirm this work, but the overall condition and appearance (including a fresh Bursch exhaust) seems to support this, as do the strong compression #s we recorded: Cylinder #1 = 130 lbs; #2 = 135; #3 = 115; #4 = 135 (pressures measured on a cold engine, three spark plugs in, carbs off). The interior is very presentable: Clean and shows little wear and no glaring faults: Nice dash, great seats, excellent original rubber floor mats. There's a very appealing original Becker 3-band radio that still works. The gauges work, except for the clock and possibly the outdoor thermometer (which seems a little "sticky"). All lighting works: Dashboard, interior, and exterior (except license plate lamps, which are missing). All the glass is great, including an excellent windshield. The wipers wipe, and the horn is loud & proud. When we trailered this car home, it would not run. We drained the tank and disassembled the Solexes to remove silt and sludge from the bowls and all the jets. With fresh fuel, it now starts easily and run strongly, but it needs fine-tuning to become really smooth and to idle well. Couple this with a sticky throttle and clutch, and the car is tricky to drive right now, but it can be done. Warmed up, it accelerates strongly. The gearbox shifts nicely, with strong sychros, and the car steers nicely and tracks straight. The ride is good (the shocks are orange beneath their undercoating, so we think they are probably Konis). We drove in all five gears, although limitedly with only the handbrake for stopping. The mileage shown on the speedo is a 48,300...Imagining that the odo "rolled over" once and totals 148k, this means about 92,000 miles. This seems about right for the car, corresponding to it's overall shape. We'd guess it has not driven 2000 miles in the last thirty years, judging by the condition of the matching set of BR-78 x 15 radials from Montg'y Wards (...When was the last time you could buy a "BR-78" tire?!). Again, there is rust repair to do, but the most important hardpoints on the structure look quite good. Crawling underneath the jacked-up car is encouraging, and there was obviously quite a bit of work done to get the engine up to par. So...What we have here is a great project car for a knowledgable, adult enthusiast. 912s got scant attention from the Porsche crowd for many years, but their values in today's market reflect a new-found respect and a growing audience. Good 356s and early 911s are getting more expensive by the day, and they are dragging 912 prices upward. Our car is presented with no reserve, and we feel it represents a great opportunity for the right buyer. This car is NOT a case of "putting lipstick-on-a-pig": We consciously did not try to cover up or gloss over any issues with this car: It is presented in all honesty, "warts and all". It will need ambition and work to make it nice, but the new owner will then be rewarded with a really lovely vintage Porsche. eBay gives us room for only 24 photos; PLEASE SUPERSIZE and EXAMINE THEM ALL.
