Vehicle Detail
My wife named the car, "In Situ". It is serial number 65 of 722 made in the final year of production. The total number of first generation Insights (2000-2006) was 17,020. I've owned it since Nov., 2009 during which time, it has been out of Arkansas only once, and that was to the Memphis airport. It has been garaged every day/night and it has been babied and given lots of TLC. Lifetime fuel mileage is 63.6 mpg. Current tank is averaging 65.5 mpg on WalMart regular. Higher mileage is possible but we live in a hilly gated retirement community and rarely take open roads or drive on flat terrain. In Situ is the most reliable and dependable car I've ever owned (and I'm 78). To the best of my knowledge, all the major mechanical systems are original. Maintenance has been limited to replacing the 3 spark plugs, setting the tappets, replacing the alternator belt, idler pulley, tires, and both batteries (in addition to routine fluid replacements). When I first bought the car, I took it to the Honda dealer in Little Rock since the IMA (hybrid) system was not operating correctly. They couldn't get stable readings from the IMA system, so they replaced the hybrid NiCad battery under warranty. Yes!! It's not rebuilt, it's a $3000 factory replacement. So the factory battery has about 32,000 miles of use. The 12 volt battery has been in there about 5,060 miles. It has a fresh oil and filter change and about 25,100 miles on the "correct" Bridgestone tires. I bought it from a police officer in the Los Angeles area and drove it home to AR. It was purchased new in San Diego (I have the paperwork). So, it has never seen winter weather. While the car is nearly all original including the radio, I did replace all the speakers and add 2 small tweeters in the doors. Yes, it did help my rather deaf old ears hear the music. It comes with the factory repair manual, a car cover, and an automatic charger for the IMA battery. Overnight charging the "big" battery every six to eight weeks equalizes the cells and should greatly extend battery life. More important, it comes with the MIMA (Manual Integrated Motor Assist) system designed and built by Mike Dabrowski that provides manual driver control of the hybrid electric system: ( see http://99mpg.com/mima/mimaintroduction/) Please note the MIMA control module on the handbrake lever and the MIMA LED indicator panel below the speedometer in the photos. With MIMA, the driver has manual control of the hybrid electrical system. That means, the driver can use the controls to charge the IMA battery up to 80 amps when "braking" down a hill or approaching a stop sign. The result? Very little wear and tear on the brakes and a great improvement in fuel mileage. The driver can also add from 0 up to 80 amps of current from the battery to the electric motor for hill climbing, passing, etc. So, the big question. Why would I sell my favorite car? I have a wife who is 16 years younger than I am who wants a new or near new Lexus RX 350 (in addition to her MBz 560 SL). I've already sold my 1962 Harley show bike. Have y'all ever priced an RX 350? No, she won't let me sell the Benz! I'll inherit her "worn out" Kia Sportage (22,000 miles). For information on these cars and on my fellow aficionados who love them, see "Insightcentral.net". Other great information sites include:www.autotrader.com/car-reviews/2000-2006-honda-insight-used-car-review-206935anden.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Insight I will provide all information and help possible. I'll happily answer questions and forward photos of anything a potential buyer would like to see. Yes, test drives are free (and fun)! My attorney tells me to add, the vehicle is sold where is, as is.
