1969 Ford Thunderbird Rust-free example of the ‘glamour bird’ era of Thunderbirds, built in Pico Rivera, California on 12/03/1968 and sold new at Loynd Ford in Thousand Oaks, CA on 02/01/1969. All 1969 Thunderbirds came standard with a 429-4V V8, automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes, and landau models came with alligator-grain vinyl roof with landau bars. In addition to all standard features, this car has optional bucket seats with center console, tilt steering wheel, power windows, power driver’s seat, power antenna, am/fm stereo, luxury wheel covers, and of course, working air conditioning. Bucket seats have been reupholstered in the correct pearlescent vinyl, while rear seat is original and in very good condition. A new factory-correct trunk kit was installed several years ago. There is a small crack on the top of the dash (see photos). Color is the original Tahoe Turquoise, repainted several years ago. It was treated to a new and correct alligator-grain vinyl top at that same time. Cost for paint, body and vinyl top totaled just over $10,000. New window and trunk weatherstrip were installed at the time of painting. Bumpers were re-chromed, and new door handles were installed when the car was repainted. The steering wheel tilts up and down and the automatic parking brake release works, but the vacuum switch for the tilt-away feature (part of the neutral safety switch assembly) is not working. An extra switch is available, but has not been installed because it has a vacuum leak. The vehicle has just over 106,000 original miles. The following items have been done in the past 10,000 miles: control arm bushings, harmonic balancer, power steering pump, high volume oil pump and seals, carburetor rebuild, new rear springs, water pump, thermostat, radiator re-core, electronic ignition, and new power window motors. I have owned the car since 2005 and have invested over $25,000 in it since its purchase. It has been a joy to own and drive over the past 13 years. However, having recently purchased another collector car, I now need the garage space for storage so my ‘Bird has to fly the coop to another fortunate owner. I possess the original black and gold license plates that were affixed to the car in 1969. I will agree to include the plates with the car if sold to a California buyer, but these black and gold plates will not be included with the car for out-of-state buyers. The car is a beauty and should not disappoint. However, please remember it is a 49-year-old car and is not “new”.
