With the 4.2-liter AJ-V8 as a starting point, engineers have now fit an Eaton Roots-type supercharger atop the all-aluminum engine providing boost levels of up to 13 psi. The result is an additional 120 bhp and 104 lb.-ft. of torque over the XK coupe's figures — with only a marginal weight increase of about 135 lb. The XKR does not like to be hustled into corners but responds well when coerced through them. Understeer is mild around the skidpad and car's rear end feels light through transitions, requiring extra-smooth steering inputs to keep the chassis happy. Finesse, in this case, yields the fastest times through the slalom. Additional "R" items included in the package are an engine oil cooler, twin air-to-liquid intercoolers, larger 14.0-in. front brake rotors, steel-braided brake lines, an R-tuned suspension and wider rear rubber — all of which transform this Grand Touring cruiser into a more serious track coupe that ends up giving an a run for its money.
