Vehicle Detail
I have owned this car 3 years and enjoyed making it better every year! A nice running car when I bought it from a Corvair lover in Nebraska. (Read the story which appeared in the Washington Times newspaper here:) http://www.vernparker.com/home/2014/7/7/1964-corvair-monza-spyder-convertible.html It is now a great running Corvair with 66,968 miles! As you can see in the photos, I need room in my home garage for my next toy so the Spyder is for sale! I have a lien free Virginia title in my name and the VIN on the title matches the VIN plate on the car. The DATA plate in the engine compartment confirms a true Spyder, the original colors (SEE PHOTO) and the YR engine number confirms it to be the correct, 164 ci Turbo engine. Included is my large file folder of all parts and labor bills spent on the car plus complete, original shop manuals and owners manual. A box of spare parts will also go with the car (most new). The car is an original Spyder, Tuxedo black with red interior, convertible. It took me a YEAR of searching to find this particular combination for sale! Very rare! The wire wheels and knockoffs are original factory Kelsey Hays (not repro) in good condition. They may or may not have been on the car from the factory. I have no way of knowing. The knockoff spinners while perfectly functional, have been abused by use of a steel (instead of lead/copper) hammer. Knockoffs from a 1962 Corvette fit perfect and are sometimes available as repros. I have replaced almost all exterior chrome, New Maxxis P185/80 R13 radial tires, new carpet, front and rear seat covers, and tonneau cover. The motor has been re-sealed and does not leak oil at this time. Work done by Corvair Ranch in PA. Rear suspension has been rebuilt as needed including new coil springs. Spring loaded belt fan idler with new bearing and new aluminum pulley. 8 Track tape deck (NOS Panasonic) and some 8 Track tapes. All new Heater hoses. Works great! Light surface rust on interior floors was wire brushed, complete floor painted with POR 15 sealer and sound proofing layed before installing all new carpet. Seat track extensions installed for more leg room and tall drivers. Brake system fully rebuilt. Turbo Carb was rebuilt. Fuel pump replaced. Many other items are rebuilt or replaced and too numerous to mention here. The car runs and drives great. The Turbo spools up as it should. The top is older (installed before I got it). However, no tears, seals are good and rear window is clear. No cracks in any glass. All gauges function but speedometer reads 10 mph fast. The exterior paint is what I would call an average repaint. This IS NOT a concours car. I have restored cars professionally for 40 years and I know the difference. However, as you can see in the photos, it still looks very, very nice. Draws a crowd everywhere I stop. The social conversation and stories are great fun! Both the trunk and engine compartment are still in factory original paint and can easily be up graded on Sunday afternoons by the next owner/caretaker. NO rust holes anywhere, just a little surface rust to be cleaned and painted over. Almost all parts I replaced on the car were purchased from Clark's Corvair. If you don't know them, they have EVERYTHING for this car! You or your inspector are welcome to visit this Spyder anytime with an appointment. This car is being sold AS IS with no warranty expressed or implied. I have described it to the best of my knowledge. If you have questions, you are welcome to call me between 1:00pm and 11:00pm any day of the week at my cell (540) 642-6335. I will be glad to help coordinate pickup by your transport carrier. No Deposit required. Payment to be made by WIRE TRANSFER only within 7 days of auction end. For lengthy storage prior to pickup, I can arrange indoor storage at my (before I retired) restoration shop, Classic Car Center, inc in Fredericksburg, Va. for as long as needed until pickup. Thanks, Garland On Nov-28-17 at 17:50:33 PST, seller added the following information: I have stated that this car has average paint and bodywork. Please remember this means if you look close (2 feet or less), you may see dust particles, chips, nicks, scratches and/or sanding marks marring the paint. Some have been touched up years ago and you may decide a few more need to be detailed now. I just want to be sure everyone understands the condition of the paint. That said, the Spyder still looks great!Thank You, GarlandOn Nov-30-17 at 17:06:42 PST, seller added the following information: Here are answers to recent questions asked by current bidders: 1) Posi traction! Yes, this Spyder has Posi traction2) Matching numbers. There is no way to verify a Corvair engine as original to a specific car. They did not stamp a partial of the VIN number on the engine as some manufactures did. However, the engine number stamped on the block has a suffix of YR which denotes a 1964 Turbo charged 164 ci engine.3) No panels replaced that I can tell. I have used a magnet to test the bodywork. There are a few spots where there is no “pull” indicating a thin layer of filler. Bottom edge of right door, left front upper corner of engine compartment and seal channel, two small spots on left rear quarter. I do not know if these repairs are for dents or rust issues. None are visible except the engine compartment corner. 4) No, the exterior paint (Tuxedo black) is not the original paint. There is no "cracking" or "checking" in the re-paint. The trunk and engine compartment paint are original and have very minimal light surface rust. The cockpit floor has been sealed and painted. There were no holes and no replacement panels. See auction description.5) I do not have a spare wire wheel for the car. 6) The convertible top is manual. Thanks,Garland
