Vehicle Detail
Today we have listed for sale a 1964 Chevrolet short wide box - a factory short wide I might add - not a lopped of long box - pickup. The truck's name is Earl, and it's been a family truck to some friends of mine for a little while now. It's retro, it's cool, slightly but delightfully crusty, way hip and it's ready for you to own. It's a great driving and running little fellow, and my friends have some other projects in mind and need to sell it, they would like to see it go to a good new home - this isn't a 'fire sale' or a ditching of an edgy vehicle, It's the first time you've seen this listed on eBay, it's not some over and over retread - this truck is really cool, is on point, and on the money! Let's talk. I will do my best to describe it so that you feel you know it. It's hard to show the total story of the van in the words I use, but I have added as many pictures as possible - probably too many, but I don't like surprises, and would rather over show than under (4 pictures and 30 words don't make a good description) - I tried to use pictures that covered the overall feel and look of the Truck. PLEASE use the scroll function down the right side of the listing - it will get you to all the photos, not the first few that show when you don't use the scroll feature. These pictures were mostly all taken at Evergreen Air Museum - I usually take them in front of a Douglas C-47 Skytrain that was part of the Normandy invasion in 1944. You will also note the Spruce Goose, a Saturn rocket and other planes in the background of some of the pictures. Evergreen is gracious in letting us use their planes and facility as a backdrop for these pictures. If you're ever in the McMinnville are please stop and see them - they have not only the air museum but an aerospace museum and an indoor water park! I use lower resolution so that anyone in the world can download them with relative ease. Please be aware that this truck is advertised and for sale locally, nationally and globally, and we do reserve the right to end this auction at any time if the vehicle sells before auction ends. This very cool, collectible, stylish and solid American classic pickup truck is definitely for sale and definitely on the money price wise. If you are SERIOUS about the vehicle - please call my cell # 503.580.6225 if I don't answer the first time - try again later - if I am at work I may not be able to answer your call. Please be considerate of the time. This is an amazingly honest, and fun vehicle one of the most realistically affordable you will find anywhere and overall is simply a great truck - one you can drive, show off mess around with and show with pride - and own something that most people don't. Someone is going to get an enjoyable, fun and great old truck here. Buy it today and be the envy of those who hesitated and missed. 1964 was a great year for Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickups. The early sixties styling is really well done, and it's really possible that they are one of the more unappreciated styles out there, but probably not for too long. 1964's restyle really cleaned things up. Gone were the torsion bars - they now had coils on all four corners (PERFECT for bagging!) Gone was the big dogleg windshield, which makes it much easier to get into. '64 was the first year of the new grille and a lot of other nice changes. As mentioned earlier this is a factory short box. There are many that have been made, and are being made from long boxes - this isn't one of 'em. Earl is a great truck, and is a pretty trouble free and turn key truck - in fact it always, always starts and runs without any trouble. Use as is, paint your logo on the side for your shop or business or hobby shop. I remember 'back in the day' there was a tan short box shorty Chev just like this here in McMinnville Oregon at a working local dairy company that had Sunshine Dairy painted on it, and a cow with the udder up front - the slogan was 'The Forward Look'. I thought that would be fun to do on this truck, but I have no room, and already have a shop truck - couldn't find a picture anywhere of it, or we would post it here. Let's go through this truck from front to back so that you know it. First off, we will be completely clear - the truck isn't perfect. It's 52 years or more old, and has 'patina', some crusty spots, and some spots of rust - but it isn't a rotten truck, far from it, overall it's very solid, and it's honest. They weren't perfect new, it isn't perfect now - but it is fun in that you can really use, and enjoy him, without worrying about it or fussing over it. Haul stuff, daily, weekend warror, leave it outside, sit on it, lean against it, use for store decor, whatever - Earl is ready to put to work, and won't gripe a bit when you do. I don't think the truck has ever just sat in a field or anything like that, it appears to always have been in use. The engine is a relatively, or completely stock Chevrolet 6 cylinder that is likely a 230. You can buy parts for it anywhere - they are affordable too, even to do an engine swap to a V8 with. It runs REALLY well, it's as typical a little cold blooded, but once warmed up has no running issues. no noises, rattles, or anything like that. Again, other than the air cleaner, it's stock, with a manual choke that I never used when starting or driving it. It doesn't seem to smoke, and probably will get you really good gas mileage. I have the same engine in my own 1964 El Camino, and I love it - wouldn't change it for the world, although a V-8 swap is pretty textbook for these trucks - we would smile just a bit more if it stayed the way it is. Exhaust system from the head pipe down is new, and pretty simple - it ends just in front of left rear wheel, and has a new little glasspack on it. It sounds all so familiar to any of you that are straight 6 fans, and these motors are really fun and torquey, especially with the manual transmission. The truck is cooled by a near new aluminum radiator. I think it may have had an electric fan at one time, but doesn't now. It's a really nice rad. It's Behind that is a factory floor shift 4 speed with what I call a 'granny' first gear, so when I drive them I start usually in 2nd gear. No issues here with the trans or clutch, it's a truck transmission, and tough as nails, I don't know that you can hurt one. The driveline works well, no issues, rear end is the same. Driveline is dependable, the truck starts every time, it's 12 volt, the charging system charges and the heater works well. Oil pressure looks good. The brakes are new - fronts are brand new discs, new calipers, newrotors, new pads etc, as are all the bearings and the drop spindles. The master cylinder is new and is dual, and adds a really good safety factor to the truck compared to the original single master. The shocks are new, and the coils have been cut too. Tires are 16 inch Goodyear radials with great tread, 225/70x16 and 225/75x16, the wheels were all professionally painted and a really nice set of 4 1966'ish Chevelle dog dish caps put on - it's a pretty cool look. If you don't want or like the caps we can discount the price a squeak. It's LOW. Probably as low as one could go while still driving on the street, at least wisely, but in the miles I drove on it, never scraped any. I have put about 100 miles on it driving it around town, taking it for pictures, moving it around and having it for a short while in my care. Bagging this truck would be a BREEZE, and get you even lower when parked. It does need a front end alignment, as one hasn't been done since putting the drop spindles on the truck. It's been largely indoor kept for the last few months, but has sat out a little and never leaks, it's indoors now until it ships out to you or you pick it up. This truck has a great stance, and attracts a LOT of attention, you'd be surprised for such a simple little truck. You can hop in a daily drive it, or go as far as you'd like. Inside, super simple. There has been some Dynamat type material put on the floors and no mats or carpets. It appears the floor is super solid, and there are not glaring issues there. The dash is all stock and uncut and the radio works, though it needs wired to the speakers on either kick panel, my guess is there was an underdash radio of some sort at some time. Wiring all appears as stock, there are a couple of toggle switches but they aren't connected to anything, nor do they go to anything. The glove box is intact and has either been replaced or is a nice original. Dash lights work, speedo and odo don't. Heater and fan / vent system work really well. Horn works. Turn signals work, not great, but they are present. Oil pressure guage and emp guage work. All the glass is good with no cracks or big chips (windshield on pass side has a some wiper scratching), door armrests are new. Doors lock. The door weatherstrips are brand new, and with them off driver door opens smoothly, but with them on you have to push in just a little before pulling it to open, this would likely change over time, but wanted to tell you about it - for that reason those door weatherstrips havent been tacked in place, so you can decide if they stay or come off, the right side has enough to cover the bottom if you put the new rockers on. All guages except that speedo and gas guage work, the fuel sender looks brand new, so the issue with gas guage is likely the guage itself. The seat is out of a later vehicle and tips forward, I don't think the stocker did. Wipers work and work well (we've had a LOT of rain) Earl doesn't seem to leak anything inside, and he smells just like he should, just takes me right back to the trucks from the 50's and 60's everytime I get in. Outside - this truck has patina!! It's had what I would call a light repaint on most of it - appears that there was a big canopy on it when painted and the taigate was off, but kept with truck, so the gate, tops of bedsides and back window area is all original paint. Yes, the rockers have some rust, but there's a new set of them included with the truck if you want them (seen in the pictures). The right seems a little worse, but it's just what they did typically. Bottoms of the front fenders aren't bad, and theres a little here and there on the bed - just check out the pictures. If you're looking for a perfect truck, this isn't it. If you want one that's real, nothing hidden and has gobs of character? Earl is your pearl! There's some dings here and there, especially on the pillar just behind the driver door (who knows why) but overall such a solid truck - look at the metal under the cab overhangs, not even a bubble, and those are some tough places to get rot out of once it starts. Really the issues are few, the rust is contained or containable, and Earl isn't a rotten truck, just crusty here and there, but aren't we all somewhat? It's from a salt free state and looks to always have been - we don't use any here in Oregon at all, and the plates in it are from the mid 70s, so likely it's been here a LONG time. West Coast trucks are super solid that way and the sheet metal doesn't do what it does in road salt using states. Big tough bumper out back, and the back up lights are not original, and not hooked up at this time. Grille is really nice, bumper is really nice. The bed floor wood has all been replaced. A custom made bed mat has been ordered for him, but they keep putting off making it, so I can't guarantee it's availability, the wood floor is solid, has been treated and fastened with all new bolts and nuts. If the mat shows before Earl sells, you are welcome to it. If you are shy, or don't want attention, this may not be the vehicle for you, as he really does attract smiles, waves and attention. He's got a great personality, and is really easy to be around. I believe Earl the Truck is one of the better buys on eBay right now in a mid 60's short wide pickup, and they hate to sell it - but it's time. Title is clean, clear, vin matches and it's in hand for you, The original VIN tag is in it's proper place, which will make a title transfer in a different state easy if needed. If you have any questions at all, please let us know, We will get back to you as soon as possible and answer them honestly. Thank you for looking and bidding! You'll definitely have fun driving and showing and working out of this truck - but - be prepared to get tons of smiles and thumbs up - (the girls AND guys will dig it!) and be the hit of any car show you take it to, with most likely a trophy or 3 to take home for the trouble - though you will make the high dollar folks mad, as crowds will form around yours more than theirs!! I will try and answer any questions I can as quickly as I can, and as honestly as I can. We are hoping that someone who digs what the truck IS and isn't focused on what it isn't will be able to purchase and continue to love on and appreciate it. It will be the source of many smiles, waves, envious stares and enjoyment that we know for sure. Buy it drive it and enjoy it - it's better than money in the bank and one heck of a lot more fun!
