Vehicle Detail
Matching number 1960 Porsche 356 roadster The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, confirms that engine #P602505 and transmission #36682 were installed at the factory when #87890 was completed 4/11/60. The left door and engine cover have the proper 90 stamped in them. I’m almost certain the right door is original, but have not removed the optional door pocket upholstery. 90 in not stamped on the front hood, so it may have been replaced at some time. Four of the five wheels are date coded 3/60 It is just out of the northern California shed where it was stored since 1984. We brought it back to life with a new battery, brake hoses, master and wheel cylinders, then rebuilt the fuel pump, oiled the cylinders, changed the oil, points and condenser. After fixing the fuel line, and adding fresh gas to the clean tank, it started. Quite a bit of “stuff” came out the tailpipe, but as it warmed up, it settled down to a decent idle. It now starts right up, and does not make any expensive noises. After driving it a bit the smoke from the oiled cylinders has gone. If you rev it hard, it will expel some black smoke. I’d think driving it another 20 or 50 miles, then doing a complete service would take care of the engine. The clutch works smoothly and the transmission shifts without grinding or making ugly noises. I certainly do not recomend it, or know why you would want to, but the car feels like you could take it to the local tire shop to change the 1964 Michelins for new tires, then stop for a tank of gas and drive it home. The body is in surprisingly good condition. The longitudinals and jack points look solid. The door gaps are very good. In the past the right front corner was damaged and poorly repaired. Of course the battery floor is rusted, but the cover hold-down springs are still properly attached. The biggest rust problems are pretty much confined to the bottoms of the doors but it will need more than a scuff and paint if you intend to make more than a driver out of it. The photos show a few holes in the original floor, and I can provide more images if you like. I think all of the hard to find parts are original to the car. A replacement engine grill is included. We’d prefer that you come inspect and drive it in Sebastopol, CA. but am willing to email detailed photos of any area, and truthfully answer any questions you may have.
