Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This 1976 Triumph Trident is another part of thinning the herd for me. In the 28 years that I have owned the motorcycle, a total of about 300 miles have been put on it. That is a very long time sitting looking beautiful not rolling around being used. The T150V Trident was what Triumph was developing slowly and economically as the Honda CB750 4 came out in 1969. If you look at the Triumph engine, you recognize parts that were lifted from the Tiger 100 Twins drivetrain and frame. It was bigger and faster, but really not a clean sheet of paper design, a clear sign of why the future of the British motorcycle Industry would eventually fail. The bike was to be shared by BSA and Triumph, the differences would be in styling and the engine’s forward tilt on the BSA’s and upright positioning for the Triumph. Things were going extremely well until the Honda debuted a year later. It must have been a shock to the folks at Meriden to see how the bikes compared, a bigger surprise to see their market share evaporating despite their efforts and the prospect of chances of surviving. When Triumph/Norton/Villiers stopped production of BSA, the plant continued building the 3-Cylinder engines with Triumph adopting the tilted BSA version as their own with shifting tasks moved to the left hand side of the power plant. In 1975, electric start was added and the bike badged as the T160V. Over 7,000 T160V’s were produced that year, but it took three years to sell the entire lot with the bikes branded and titled according to the years they were sent to the dealers. I bought this 1976 T160V from Chuck Spearbeck, then manager at Holzgang Mazda/Jeep in Grants Pass in 1988. Malcolm Shorter, their detail guy back then, had sold him the bike about a year earlier and he got it when it had come in on trade. It was wearing high rise bars and Baloney Cut Mufflers and the paint on the tank was gas stained. It was needing attention and Chuck was all thumbs with tools. Over the next ten years, I slowly resolved the issues, had paint work done, found a stock air box, ordered a set of stock looking after market mufflers for it and replaced seals as they started leaking, a tasking familiar to any British bike owner. The head light shell has a small dent in the top of it. Someday I was going to replace it. It is just part of the stewardship of owning a British motorcycle. The bike is not restored, it has been maintained and will continue to be needed as time goes on. Miles are 6,088 and VIN# T160GK04205.
