Vehicle Detail
Hello, here we have a 1981 Chevy Impala 9C1 retired police car. Ex-City of Hays, Kansas unit. I took this in on trade, and while it is a fun car to drive and gets more looks than my 1993 Mustang Cobra, I need to free up some space before winter gets here, so its gotta go. In the several months I have owned it, I have put less than a thousand miles on it, but will tell you all I know about the car. First off, the 5-digit odometer shows 69,413, and its a safe bet that it has rolled over at least once. Its equipped with the 350-4V V8, which according to Wikipedia and a GM police vehicles brochure, was only available in the 9C1 Impala. The biggest motor us civilians got was the 305. It starts easily and has plenty of power, but runs rich with a slight haze at cold idle and will smoke black under hard acceleration. The 3-speed automatic shifts nice and firm, not issues there. Other than running rich, the only other mechanical issue it has is a leak from the power steering gearbox. It drips just enough to require topping off about once a week. AC is inop, but the heat works great. Radio is MIA. The car handles, turns, and stops great. It has 4 newer matched Primewell brand tires. It is missing one hubcap. Full-size spare is in the trunk. Lights, blinkers and horn all work. The spotlights and emergency lights mounted on the parcel shelf are unhooked. Rear window defroster still works! Tilt column is tight. The interior is remarkably clean, with no rips, tears or holes on the seats. Drivers seat track is broken, and while it stays in place, it does not want to adjust. I'm 6'1" and it fit me fine, so I never bothered to investigate further. All the gauges work, including the police-spec speedo and the rare 3-gauge pod to the right of the column. Dash has some cracks, but its all there. Worst part of the interior is the headliner, you know the story, its coming down in the back of the car, but not down enough yet to warrant the thumb-tack treatment. All 4 power windows work, but sometimes the drivers door window 'quits', and you have to slap the door while holding the switch, and it will go back to working, but all 4 regulators are a-ok. It was repainted at some point, an amateur job, but still presentable. When you get close you can see imperfections, nicks, leftover adhesive from masking tape, and chipping on the bumper fillers. It was hit in the rear when I got it; all I did was replace the rear bumper with a clean used unit. You can see in the pics where the rear bumper filler was cracked in multiple places. It also appears the the rust in the rear quarters was painted over as well. I took pics of both quarter areas, so please look closely. It comes with a factory Chevrolet service manual, owners manual and paperwork, but no police logs (darn!) The Impala is available for viewing in KC with reasonable notice, right off 435 by the Worlds Of Fun theme park. Please look at the pics closely, what you see is you get. This is not a show car (not even close), but a fun car that would make a great fixer-upper project, or drive and enjoy just as it is. I have described it to the best of my ability, but this is a 34-year old ex-police car, so for both our sakes, please don't expect to fly in and drive it 500 miles. I will be happy to assist you or the shipper of your choice, however. Questions? Ask away, I will reply in as timely manner as possible. And now the fine print... This car is sold as-is where-is, with no warranties expressed or implied. I do not need help selling. Not looking for any trades.
