Vehicle Detail
Today we have listed for sale a really solid, running and driving 1949 Chevrolet 3100 Short Box pickup. It belongs to a friend of mine who has way too many vehicles and needs to pare down to just a few. I will do my best to describe it so that you feel you know it. It's hard to show the total story of this truck in the words I use, but I have added as many pictures as possible - I tried to use pictures that covered the overall feel and look of the car. These pictures were mostly all taken at Evergreen Air Museum - many in front of a Douglas C-47 Skytrain that was part of the Normandy invasion in 1944. You will also note the Spruce Goose, a Saturn rocket and other planes in the background of some of the pictures. Evergreen is gracious in letting us use their planes and facility as a backdrop for these pictures. If you're ever in the McMinnville are please stop and see them - they have not only the air museum but an aerospace museum and an indoor water park! I use lower resolution so that anyone in the world can download them with relative ease - there are a LOT of pictures so make sure and use the scroll feature on the right side. Why do we post so many pictures? So you can see exactly what it is you are purchasing - nothing hidden, no surprises. Please be aware that this pickup is advertised and for sale locally, nationally and globally, and we do reserve the right to end this auction at any time if the vehicle sells before auction ends. This working, and road worthy pickup is definitely for sale and definitely on the money price wise. If you are SERIOUS about the truck - please call my cell # 503.580.6225 if I don't answer the first time - try again later - if I am at work I may not be able to answer your call. Please be considerate of the time. This is just a great old pickup, and you can have a blast without spending another dime on it. Someone is going to get an enjoyable, fun and great oldie and goodie here. Buy it today and be the envy of those who hesitated and missed. 1949 was a great year for Chevrolet. They had a ton of great and near new to the market vehicles to offer, and the Chevrolet trucks for that year are among some of the most beautiful and hardest working pickups that Chevy ever produced. Meet Harold, a 1949 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup that is mostly a survivor, and a truck you can hop in, fire up, drive around and have a blast with just as it is. If you're looking for a super shiny, spiffed up truck, look no farther, this probably isn't the truck for you - but - you have probably seen the pictures first, so you have an idea of what this truck is. Harold is super solid, and isn't a show truck, but he has years of great service left to give or will provide the foundation for a great 'drive it as you do it' project. Bang for the buck? You will not find a better value for the dollar. Let's go through the truck from front to back - I don't know a lot of the 'way back' history, but it's evident that Harold has always been in service and has never sat languishing in a field, in fact for the last few years he's been in a shop next to a very original Model A Coupe (Harley), and used to drive to town and run errands, hauling items for the owner's acreage. Yep, Harold's used to working for his keep! The engine appears to be either the, or an original 216, and it's just super stock. It doesn't seem to burn or leak a lot of oil, and is really pretty sanitary for as 'crusty' as it looks. The oil bath air cleaner is in place, and the carburetor is a not too old remanufactured unit. You'll note an alternator in place, and the truck has been converted to 12 volt, one of the best things a person can do to one of these older vehicles. Other than that, under the hood, Harold is stock. The exhaust is older, but serviceable, and isn't noisy even though it runs a glass pack. The transmission is a 3 speed on the column, and it works just fine - you're not going to win any drag races with power and speed shifting, but it's plenty torquey, the clutch works great and it all functions. There is no excessive noise or slop in the driveline or rear end - once again, just like the General made it, and super functional. This truck starts in less than a full revolution of the motor, and starts every time. When it's really cold one uses the manual choke but in warm weather no choke even, boom he starts - every time. It doesn't overheat - we drove it in 100 degree weather with no issues at all. The brakes have been worked over (I am told - I have NOT pulled the drums) and it stops accordingly. The wide whitewall tires are so new they still have nubs on them - they are not bias plys, they are radials - this truck really tracks well down the road. The tires were purchased from the local Les Schwab tire store. I can't find a brand on them, but once again, they are like new. I am told that the brakes were gone through at the same time the tires were put on. It stops secure and straight, every time. I have spent quite a bit of seat time in Harold, getting to know him pretty well, and probably driven 150 or so miles on it - many driving it to my place from my friends. Mind you, it's a 1949 vehicle, so you aren't going to go compete in autocrosses, but it's just a stone stock solid driver. I've been all around town in it, to some cruise ins and to stores, to work etc and it's solid and dependable, just a 'turn key' truck. Inside is pretty basic, and I might say 'spartan'. The interior is largely as original. The seat was recovered at some time, but the bottom cushion (obviously) has torn, so there's been a blanket on it. It's been in a rural shop, but had not been mouse infested (no nests) so no funny smells or anything (the picture with the seat up is the first time that seat had been up in years). The left door panel is not there, but the purchase price includes a new set of door panels and new trim that goes around them. Also included is a brand new headliner, but I kind of like the original one that's in it, but that's just me. It doesn't appear that a radio has ever been installed, at least not a factory one. The windshield glass is all good, one side looks like it's original, though maybe the rubbers were replaced Both side glasses and rear window are new and lightly tinted, the rear rubber being new. The left window is a little harder to roll up than the right sometimes. The doors lock with an original key. The ignition is on a switch under the dash, but there's a new keyed ignition switch that is included. I've not messed with the heater - my guess is it's still 6 volt, so one would probably want to add a voltage drop (like a Runtz) if you wanted the motor to last. The heater core doesn't leak and the heater itself appears to be all original. The dash is really nice and uncut. There is no glove box liner, but those are easy to get. The wiper pivots and linkages are in place but it will need arms and a motor, which would have been vacuum. I am told they sent it out to be rebuilt but never got it back - but they are readily available. The guages all seem to work, but I am not sure about the gas guage - and the speedometer/odometer work, but read a little under what they really should - obviously the mileage has rolled over and being the truck is 66 years old, 187 miles isn't actual mileage. All that said, it's very very functional. As for the exterior - can you say patina? I know thats probably an overused word, but this has it in spades. Someone has sanded and primered the front fenders and hood as well as using some light and dark primer at some point, but you can see the original Sea Crest Green on the edges in the pictures. The cab and such where the original paint is are beatifully sun-burned. I don't see anywhere that the truck has had major body work, but the front of the bed looks like it may have been blue at one time, so is most likely off another truck. It also doesn't appear to be full of bondo either, and the chassis is super solid. I have never seen the crayon markings that are on the firewall - this is very cool and may have done at the factory when this truck was being built, or was it later? I think I know what the numbers represent, but when was it done? The original wood is on the bed floor, it needs replaced (or not), but with the plywood that's on it it's very serviceable, in fact we toted an engine in it a few weeks ago. The fenders and the tailgate are pretty darned nice, and all work as they should. The 'normal' spots in the cab - the lower front corner, the rear cab just in from the corners have the usual 'airiness', but from the outside and on the actual corners they are very solid - you can see them all in the pictures. There is also a little spot on the floor to the front of the battery access that has perfs, this is pretty small and I don't think I would use a patch, either leave or repair. Included with the truck are patch panels for the rear cab corners and floor perf if you did want to use. The only readily visible spot is the one on the left front lower of the cab cowl. The doors are as solid as I have seen - and overall this truck is rock solid - we have some amazing sheet metal here in Oregon, and I don't think you will find better anywhere. We don't use salt on any of our roads, and that's what has kept this truck as intact as it is. As crusty as Harold looks, he is a very solid and serviceable pickup. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to make him a daily driver, one that I could, and have been able to depend on just like the current owner has, and he drives better than some of his shiny brethren. Title is a clean and clear Oregon title with a VIN # that matches the one in the drivers door post/factory info tag. There has been absolutely no fluffing or detail done on this truck, it's as it has been kept for years, and is absolutely as honest as they come. As mentioned earlier this could be used as is - without touching a thing, or 'fix up' as one goes, or use it as a base for a really tricked out truck. Farm truck, rolling advertisement, redo the green paint on the front and rear for a full patina effect - the sky's the limit with this. We are hoping that someone see Harold for what he is and enjoys him just or mostly the way he is. One thing is for certain, you will get tons of waves, thumbs up and attention at any car show or cruise you went to - this isn't for the shy! Patina or the "Barn Find" look is really really in right now and this truck fills the bill for what is hot hot hot in todays scene. I've always loved a rig with a good story, and I really wish Harold could talk, as I imagine the stories would be simply awesome. Check out the rest of the pictures, then buy it drive it and enjoy it - it's better than money in the bank and one heck of a lot more fun!
