Vehicle Detail
Up for bid is a 1949 Dodge Coronet D-30 with no reserve. The car is owned by my dad who bought it about 12 years ago. The intent was to drive it around town occasionally, but since the time he got it, most of the few miles he put on it was going into town to get it inspected every year. He can no longer work on it easily and decided that the time to sell it is here. It is NOT a show car or it would be priced much higher. I will be upfront about it's condition and answer any questions I can so that hopefully there won't be any "surprises" if you decide to bid. The car is currently registered, inspected and drivable. When the car was purchased the previous owner said that the engine was rebuilt (mains, rods, rings) on 4-1-83 at 55,497 miles. He said the body was painted in that timeframe too. I cannot prove this but there is a date and mileage on the firewall written in pencil where someone wrote it down. The current mileage is 61,411. I CANNOT VERIFY IF THIS IS ACCURATE, but the odometer does work. Here are some details: Exterior paint and body- Same condition as when he bought it. No dents. It looks like there was some body work done on it. Definitely around the rocker panel areas and maybe the lower doors. If you look closely, the rocker panel moldings are screwed on because the original mounting holes were filled in. From underneath the rocker area looks pretty solid. (see photo). No holes in trunk floor. The paint itself is good, but not professional. It has some blemishes and fine scratches and looks like a repaint to someone who knows what they are looking for. To the casual observer, it looks pretty good. Chrome and stainless steel trim- Chrome is complete and has minor to moderate pitting (see photos). Stainless trim is complete but has some minor dings and dents. Some mars and scrapes on the bumpers too. Interior- Complete and original except the carpet and seat covers. Seats were covered years ago and the driver seat cover is ripped (see photo). Surprisingly, the original seat that is exposed under the seat cover does not look ripped. Not sure of how the original seat looks elsewhere. Speedometer, heat oil pressure, gas and amp gauge work. The gas gauge sending unit was replaced. Radio and clock do not work. Heater works but the ventilation ductwork in the engine compartment was removed to do some work and needs to be reinstalled. The ductwork is included. There are some stains on the interior door cloth and headliner (see photos). There is also a small rip in the headliner near the rear window (see photo). Glass is good and windows all work. Engine and drivetrain- Engine is a flathead inline 6 cylinder. Starts and runs well. No rod or bearing knocks. Minimal, if any, oil burning. Carburetor was rebuilt and fuel pump replaced last year. Coolant has been flushed and hoses replaced. Radiator is good shape, no leaks. Battery is a few years old. Has fluid drive unit and 3 speed manual transmission which shifts fine. Here is a youtube link that shows the engine starting and running. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeLUpBSZZdQ Note that the does not go up on high idle in the video because the engine was warm and restarted about 30 minutes after it was previously shut off. It does go on high idle when cold. Sorry that the vides is a little choppy but the sound is uninterrupted. The engine does drip some oil so we kept a cookie sheet under it. You should know that the engine temperature will creep up into the 180+ zone on the heat gauge when it is warm out and idling, probably hotter than it should get, so we intended to replace the engine water distribution tube but never quite got to it. The new tube is included with the car. Exhaust- Tight, no leaks. New from the muffler back. Brakes- New brakes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and silicone brake fluid 10 years ago with virtually no wear on them. Tires- 7.10-15 WSW Firestone by Universal Tire. Original design tires (not radials) were replaced in November 2005 at a cost of $528. No noticeable cracks and less than 50 miles on them. Drivability- Drives well but does wander some and pulls a little to the left when braking. Probably needs a brake adjustment (since the brakes are new) and possibly some front end work to tighten things up. The suspension looks solid though and there are no obvious broken or missing parts. Let me know if you have any questions. Please understand that the buyer will be responsible for making transportation arrangements to pick up the car.
