Vehicle Detail
1997 EuroVan Camper Up for auction is our wonderful 1997 Volkswagen EuroVan Camper. She's more of a family member than a car, and we can talk on and on about all the wonderful memories we have with her. But, all good things have to come to an end, and as we're moving into the city, it's clear that she can't come with us. We're looking for someone who will love her as much as we have. First, a little bit of history if you're not familiar with the VW EuroVan camper. When the front-engine EuroVan was released as the predecessor to the rear-engined VW Vanagon, Westfalia decided to not turn the EuroVan into a full camper anymore. They settled on a "weekender", which has the pop-top but no camping gear. Winnebago in the United States, saw an opportunity. They partnered with VW to build the EuroVan Camper as a pop-up camper very similar to the Westfalia Vanagon. However, with the engine in the front, the Eurovan is more reliable, offers a smoother ride, and has front airbags. The Eurovan Camper also has a longer wheelbase and a 12,000 BTU heater. This very clean camper in excellent condition features: - Liquid propane tank - 2-burner stove - Norcold fridge - 12,000 BTU heater - Potable water tank - Grey water tank - Interior lights - 120V outlets when connected to city power - Six-cylinder VR6 engine - Power windows - Power locks - Air condition - Dual airbags - ABS brakes - Sleeps 4 people comfortably - Swivel chairs in the front - Sidewinder awning - Kenwood stereo with input for iPhone - Aftermarket front curtain with mosquito net - Extra optional row of seats, increasing seating capacity from 4 to 6 people (optional equipment) Maude, as we call her, comes with a number of upgrades. Most important to mention is the transmission work. As you might or might not be aware of, the original EuroVan Camper transmission is considered the achilles heal of this vehicle. You can read up on it here on GoWesty or research the many forums out there on the topic. While many local transmission shops will quote you a few thousand dollars for a new transmission, more research will reveal that you need to call in the experts on this. German Transaxle in Oregon is considered the absolute rebuilders of these transmissions, which is who we went with. Rumor is that GoWesty uses them for all their transmissions also. They also require you to add a transmission cooler after the rebuild, which we also did. The bill for the transmission alone was just under $5K, another $2K for local labor and coast-to-coast shipping. This was done 20K miles ago, and we've had absolutely zero issues since. You simply don't want to own an EuroVan Camper without a rebuilt German Transaxle transmission in it. One other upgrade we made was installing a lift kit. These campers are notorious for leaving to the left, more information here. It's simply because all the camping equipment is on the driver side, and it adds quite a bit of weight. This is also the side that has the LP propane tank. We bought the lift kit (only) from GoWesty, making it straight and also higher off the ground when getting in and out of camp sites. We're sure you'll enjoy her as much as we have. Happy bidding.
