Vehicle Detail

This is a real, authentic, original, unrestored 1996 Saleen Mustang S281 Convertible. Saleen production number 96-0216. The factory Convertible with the soft tonneau cover is the rarest of the rare. It’s a factory drop-top original Saleen, and the original window sticker is included. Saleen had Ford Mustangs delivered directly to their California assembly plant and converted them to the S281. This vehicle was purchased new for a bit over $37,000 through Alan Ford in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This is our 3rd Saleen Convertible, and we purchased it from a family acquaintance in March of 1999. My wife has been the sole summer driver since then. Factory white exterior, black leather interior, black soft tonneau cover, and black convertible top. Ultra rare and collectible, in its original paint. It’s a non-smoker vehicle that’s been driven every summer (except 2014), so it does have several rock chips and imperfections. The engine is the factory 4.6L V-8 with the 5 speed manual transmission. Regular maintenance has been performed. A new clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing replacement was performed by Livernois Engineering and Motorsports at 49,000 miles. The tires have a few thousand miles on them, and the battery and serpentine belt were new last year. Some service records come with the car. The original mileage reads just under 51100 - that’s an average of less than 3000 miles per year since new. Though far from perfect, it’s a real head-turner. The car has a minor crease in the passenger side door (see photo). No collisions, never painted or repaired, and it has all of its original body panels. This vehicle is loaded, and has a power top, A/C, leather seats, power driver seat, PW, PDL, Tilt, Cruise, Mach 460 sound, AM/FM Cassette. Spare tire never used. Also includes the Saleen lug wrench. It has the Saleen factory-installed Racecraft suspension, and various other performance enhancements. View the photograph of the window sticker for a complete list of Saleen options. Please note we had the Saleen five spoke wheels professionally chrome plated about 15 years ago. It also has a Saleen-specific integral roll bar and rear glass window with the Saleen wreath. Please note there are a number of imperfections, because it was driven nearly every summer. Here are some of the standout items. I’ve included everything I’ve noticed: As mentioned, there is one small dent on the right door (see photos), but there has never been any paint work on the car anywhere - it is the original factory paint. Two of the wheel center caps are missing the Saleen decal sticker. The convertible top has a few examples of wear along the sides and rear. Functions perfectly. The driver side interior door panel has two imperfections. The steering wheel cover has an imperfection. When the original serpentine belt broke, it hit and removed a small piece of the felt under the hood. The paint covering on the driver side inside door handle area has peeled. The windshield decal has peeled (but a new Saleen authentic decal is included). The small “cloth” windscreen areas on the front and rear fascia need replacement (but new authentic Saleen metal replacements are included). The Saleen floor mats are included, and the driver mat shows heavy wear. There are scuffs, paint chips, the damage on the passenger door, and other blemishes. I’ve provided photographs of the blemishes. This is a used, unrestored original Saleen S281 convertible vehicle, and was driven only during the summer since we’ve owned it. In 2001, we purchased a decal/stripe kit for the vehicle (factory kit, directly from Saleen and purchased “just in case”), a windshield decal, and the rear window wreath decal. This kit is likely valued at over $500, and is included in this sale. Rides firm, turns on a dime, stops great, takes a corner at twice the speed of any other vehicle, and has a great, throaty sound from the Saleen factory. The new Mustangs are much faster, though. Also included is the original factory owner’s manual, both original keys and key fobs, top boot cover (and the case that holds it) for when the top is down, and that factory soft tonneau cover that makes it appear as a two-seater. If you have any questions, please contact us and we will answer all questions. This will be a final sale and must be completed within 10 days of auction end. No refund, no warranty, no guarantee, no excuses that the spouse did not approve the purchase, etc. PayPal or credit card payment will be accepted for the non-refundable and required deposit only. The balance of the purchase price will be cash, or wire transfer to my Credit Union only.
