Vehicle Detail

1964 Volvo 1800S Sea Creature in Pearl White B18 engine 4spd with Overdrive A Legend is Born This car is legendary. Many of you have forgotten more than I know about these iconic cars. Allow me to indulge a bit of the history for those who might not already know. Engineering and executive support for the highly stylized coupe came from the legendary Helmer Petterson. To say it was a departure from their stable of products is an understatement. Italian design was as highly regarded then as it remains today so, design work was outsourced to a suitable firm fueled by the right kind of cappuccino and flair. Much of the design work was actually accomplished by Helmer’s son, Pelle Peterson. They preferred to keep the Swede's contribution hush-hush at first opting to support the notion of superior Italian penmanship (he was living there, maybe it's in the olive oil!). This helped usher the vehicle through approval. Pelle’s contribution has long since been cemented in automotive history. Good on ya! I haven’t read anything to support this, but I see a bit of sea creature in this beautiful shape. The small roof line and fins recall a stingray in motion. The front grill opening certainly looks like any number of underwater creatures. I think the pearl white paint job on this car reflects those styling cues well. Please click the following for a link to all pictures in this listing and more --http://s1382.photobucket.com/user/rootedowne/library/1964%20Volvo%201800S Model Year’s of Distinction Production of this vehicle was handled by Jensen motors for the first few years. Production concerns forced the decision to move manufacturing back to Swedish headquarters. 1964 was the first year for this change. The “S” in 1800S proudly stands for Sweden and not “sport”. A common mistake made by yours truly as well! They had a strong reputation for reliability and wanted to reassure their discerning market of buyers. Several fantastic styling details were eventually dropped either in an effort to shave costs or comply with new regulations. 1964 was the last year for the coveted “bull horn” front bumper. The egg crate grill was soon to follow. Trim on the earlier models is very heavy chrome plated stainless steel. It’s reminiscent of 50’s cars and high end luxury vehicles through the 60’s. The door trim follows the curved line of the sheet metal. This was dropped for simpler, lighter gauge trim around 1967. Vehicle Details The color codes for this vehicle confirm the pearl white paint code (79), but also indicates an interior color of black. It is possible that a dealer optioned red interior was offered. The front seats have the sheen from rub and use that certainly suggest they’ve been with the car for a long time. However, this change could have been made quite some time ago. The front seats could use a bit of foam work, but the overall look suits the car very well. Another iconic detail from this era are the Smith gages with bright blue backgrounds and the stylized mesh chrome trim that surrounds them. Also note the rear view mirror mounted on the dash. Combined with the rugged steering wheel, the overall combination nails the sport coupe theme. The speedometer and tachometer were intermittent for awhile. They are not functioning currently. Certainly worth preserving. The door panels on this car are unique. They come in 3 sections. The top sections are original and show the kind of rubbed looked on their top vinyl trim. The bottom sections are new and likely even better than factory originals. In my opinion, the middle sections are a weakness. This is the door pull section. They are new, but do not feel as solid as I imagine the originals were. Then again, this may have been the case new, I wouldn’t know. Thought I’d at least point it out. Mechanicals This car received a common carburetor upgrade. It now has a downdraft Weber. The location of the mechanical choke cable was moved to the right on the dashboard. This car was very cold and had sat for nearly a month when I started it the other day. With the choke engaged and a few pumps of the accelerator it started right up. It has not been driven much in the last several years. A spring tune-up and carburetor check is likely in order. It shifts into overdrive just fine. A small blue light on the dash board comes on when it’s engaged. The toggle switch is just above the center console. A new set of interior panels were installed in the trunk when if was getting repainted. The new panels come with cutouts for the license plate light, but not for the rear taillights. The tail lights were hooked up during assembly but I think it would be better to modify the panels and double check the wiring. This car has the very quaint VIN of 9509. Eventually Volvo followed suit with everyone else, but early on they started with 1 and counted up. Pretty early in this series. I can not confirm actual mileage of this vehicle. Can't wait to see what it's future has in store! On Dec-17-14 at 16:18:34 PST, seller added the following information: Sorry for the confusion. I guess some of the links to pictures above were broken. They are all in the main link and/or Ebay listing photos. Following are what I posted -- Door Trim closeup -- Bull Horn bumper detail -- Dash Detail -- BTW, many thanks for all the interest. Wow!On Dec-21-14 at 11:35:40 PST, seller added the following information: I've had several questions about rust concerns, etc. Any car of this era could fall prey to the ravages of time. Volvo's were not immune. I should have been more thorough in this part of the description. I just now added some photos of the undercarriage. The guy where it is stored was kind enough to snap a few (see photobucket link above and go to end). It wasn't on a lift and the lighting wasn't the best, but he captured the fundamentals pretty well. This is a very solid car. The jack point and other cross members were replaced some time ago. They haven't seen much use since their installation. The undercarriage still wears most of it's original undercoating. Rocker panels, lower rear fender panels and the rear valance (behind bumper) we also repaired correctly with metal. There are very few Volvos from this era that have not had some body work done. It's nice to know when it is done correctly with new metal replacing old. In preparation for paint, everything was scrutinized. The doors, hood and trunk lid were removed. New rubber seals were put in place after paint. Door jams, trunk, engine bay are all very presentable. Thanks again for all the interest. Hundreds of followers, quite a few overseas. A new adventure awaits!
