Early cars could suffer from deterioration of their Nikasil plated cylinders (BMW and Porsche encountered this same malady) and all pre-2003 cars are in danger of catastrophic engine problems due to failure of the secondary/upper timing chain tensioners. This 370 horsepower AJ-V8 2001 XJR is a post-Nikasil car that has had one lady owner and has covered under 37,000 miles since new. It was originally leased and then bought out through Jaguar's "Select Edition" program. It recently had the upper timing chain tensioners replaced with the latest metal versions and has also had the headliner redone. Also the standard XJ8s were equipped with the 5HP24 ZF 5 speed transmission the could fall victim to drum failure at the 80k mile mark, but for the XJR, Jaguar sourced the excellent 796 ft-lb torque capacity 5G-tronic transmission from Mercedes-Benz.
