While the '63-65 cars are red hot right now, this sleek, handsome 1966 Riv can't be far behind. Great colors, big horsepower, and incomparable luxury make this a great example of GM's best luxury/muscle machine. Bright red isn't this car's original color, but nobody can argue that it doesn't wear it well. The chiseled front end with razor-edged fenders and hidden headlights gives it a familiar look that is clearly descended from the 1965 Riviera, but it's totally unique. Finish work is quite good, with a lot of very straight body panels that probably added 20% to the total just for sheer size. The cowl tag says it was originally white and the improvement is a good one, showcasing the Riv's performance without diluting its luxury. A black vinyl top is correct and has been nicely restored with correct materials and straight seams, and as with all vinyl tops, the important areas under the rear window seem to be in good order. As with many early Rivieras, the use of chrome is restrained, with massive bumpers but little else to detract from the clean shape, and all of the brightwork here is in excellent condition. And yes, the headlights are fully functional! The black interior is more awesome design from the guys at GM design studios, and it looks like a grown-up's car. Exceptionally nice upholstery on the split bench that simulates bucket seats gives it a sporty feel without diminishing the full-sized feeling. Recent carpets and beautiful door panels suggest that someone has loved this car all its life. Options include A/C that has been upgraded to R134a refrigerant and blows cold, a tilt steering column, a power seat, power windows, and a rather rare rear defogger. Even the radio is the original AM/FM stereo unit that sounds like 1966 all over again. The gauges are very cool, including the wonderful barrel-type speedometer that makes for a compact gauge cluster that's easy to read at a glance. The three-spoke steering wheel will look familiar to Buick fans and you'll note that they resisted slathering fake wood all over the place; that would come later. A massive trunk is, of course, part of the package and includes a tire well that keeps the spare out of sight. Buick's 425 cubic inch "Nailhead" V8 is a torque factory and moves this car like it weighs 1500 pounds less than it does. With a great sound that's totally unique, the big Wildcat engine is equally happy trundling through traffic where you can't even feel it idling to hammering along at triple-digit speeds through the plains. Bright Dante Red paint is a Buick trademark dating back to the '40s and the 465 on the air cleaner represents the torque output, and you can definitely feel it. The venerable Dynaflow disappeared after 1963, but in its place you get a bulletproof TH400 3-speed automatic and a heavy-duty rear end, which now hangs off a set of new springs for the correct ride height. Recent mufflers highlight a very tidy original chassis and it rides smoothly on a set of big 225/70/15 BFG radials on Buick styled road wheels. This Riviera gets an A+ in the styling department with the horsepower to back up its look. Expect these cars to see some major gains in the coming years, and this is one of the better ones we've ever seen.
