Vehicle Detail
This vehicle is being relisted because of a non-paying bidder. If you missed this the last time you get a second chance but please only bid if you plan to follow through on your commitment, Thanks. If you have seen the news lately about the collector car auction results in Scottsdale and Amelia Island you know about the record prices realized for excellent examples. Collector car prices continue to rise. HAGERTY.COM puts the value of a #2 MGA Roadster Excellent at $32,200 (#1 Concours is $42,200). Despite this, the MGA is one of the last really affordable entries in the market. This example has been in our shop now for about 5 years. It began as a stalled restoration project with a previous owner with good intentions. The vehicle arrived already off its frame. Starting with a relatively complete vehicle our shop began work. BODY The body was completely stripped down to bare metal. Rust through areas were cut out and new steel panels were replaced in the trunk floor, inner wheel wells, the inner and outer rockers, door sills and where necessary fenders were repaired. Any noticeable dings were bumped out. Once all rust repair was completed the body and panels moved to our paint booth were they received an epoxy primer base and a finish coat of Chariot Red. The finish was sanded and rubbed out. All new body rubber (grommets, seals, gaskets) was used as the body was reassembled. A newer rag top is installed with serviceable after market side curtains for those occasional foul weather days. New front and rear bumpers and front bumper brackets were installed. A new MGA grill and headlight stone guards finish off the outstanding look. CHASSIS The previous owner had completed prepping the chassis and painting with chassis black. We continued the work rebuilding the front suspension with new king pins and bushings. The rear axle was refurbished with new pinion and axle seals, axle bearings and thrust washers in the differential. New floorboards were installed. The fuel system has a new SU "pointless" fuel pump, fuel tank and sender. Five new 165R80 tires (includes the spare) have been fitted to refurbished wire wheels. For safety, new brake calipers, pads, rotors, rear wheel cylinders and shoes were installed. A new master cylinder for the brake and clutch was also installed. ENGINE The vehicle has only 35,000 original miles. The engine received new piston rings and bearings, all standard size, seals and gaskets. The head was refurbished as a no-lead head allowing today's unleaded fuels to be used without concern. The SU carburetors were rebuilt with new gaskets, jets and needles. The throttle shaft bushings were reamed and fitted with oversize throttle shafts to help eliminate air leaks. The ignition system has a Pertronix solid state ignition system to help insure reliable starting in any weather. The cooling system had a new radiator and water pump and the heater core was flushed and verified to be leak free. There is a 50/50 mix of extended life antifreeze and distilled water installed. A new clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing and clutch slave cylinder was installed. The transmission shifts smoothly through all four gears and reverse. New u-joints were installed in the drive shaft. The all new exhaust system is polished stainless steel with new brackets and mounting hardware. New oil and air filters were installed and an oil change using 20W-50 oil with ZDDP was completed after engine break in. The engine compartment was detailed to show standards including the period cast aluminum finned valve cover. The original stamped steel valve cover is also available. ELECTRICAL New braided wiring harnesses were installed on the chassis, the body and with the instrument panel. The generator has new bearings and brushes. For reliability, the twin 6v batteries have been replaced with a new single 12v battery on the passenger's side. It remains a positive ground vehicle. INTERIOR The new Brooklands steering wheel sets off the chariot red dash. The new black vinyl interior has been fitted over new foam and rubberized horsehair stuffing. New black carpeting was fitted in the cockpit, battery cover area and the trunk floor. New panels and door pockets were used. The cockpit rail trim was replaced. There is a new windshield installed with new wipers and arms. Most of the shiny bits in the cockpit area have been replaced with new. There are all new cables for accelerator, choke, starter, heater and handbrake. All the instruments and controls function as they should. OVERALL As parts were being reinstalled on the vehicle they have been cleaned and painted as close to original as possible. The vehicle was intended to be one that could be driven 300 miles to a show, place favorably in that show and then return its owner reliably home. All systems from the mundane windshield washer pump to the engine itself have been verified to insure that they are performing as they should. Please take the opportunity to review the pictures and ask any other questions you have about this excellent example of an MGA Roadster. Despite the pictures and descriptions this vehicle is best appreciated by a personal inspection. As this is a 54 year old vehicle it is being sold as is with no returns for buyers remorse. For those potential clients that may be arriving via air we are happy to offer pick up and drop off service for you at the Indianapolis airport.
