Vehicle Detail
Here is a 1966 GMC 1/2 ton 1000 series 2wd manual 4 speed pickup with the big 351 V6. NO power steering No power brakes NOT THE 305 V6!!!! Ok so here is the deal. I like these old trucks!! This one is very original the way I like them. I have several of these and I am working on restoring one or two or three... This truck just seems to be all there and unmolested. I bought the truck last March and drove it since then as my shop truck. I put about 1,500 miles on it to date. I live rural about 5-6 miles out of town on a paved county road so most drives where 10-15 miles back and forth and around our little town. It came from central Montana where a farmer had it then to a guy in Spokane WA who used it as his "pickup" for last 20 yrs then to me. Guy in Spokane kept a log book on when he drove truck where they went camping etc maint. and just all around fun journal of his time with "LUCKY" (his name for the truck that has since stuck with my family) Point here is just that this is a cool old truck! So as stated it runs and drives! has good tires. Brakes work and in fact I recently put shoes on front turned all 4 drums and put a new wheel cylinder on the back as well as a wheel bearing on drivers rear wheel. Has pretty new dual exhaust that sounds pretty cool! The front end does not seem to have any excessive wear or shake tires are not wearing funny. The headlights, markers and turns all work. The backup lights work but the switch by shifter is broke so I tapped the wires and have been looking for a replacement switch. The gauges work! The dash back lights work even on the heater controls and the dome light! the heater controls are all there and work! the turn signals work and even self cancel in both directions! The choke works! the knobs are all original GMC knobs. It has good original GMC seat belts and I even added an era correct third one to the center. Wipers work two speeds. washer squirters are there but do not work. Glove box cardboard is in good shape. lower fresh air vents work and seal shut. Parking brake does not work- needs adjusted? cables are there. sun visors on both drivers and passengers side original and pretty good shape. Key fits door , gas cap and ignition. The windows both roll up and down and the wing glasses open and close and do not whistle. Has newer windshield and gasket. (passenger side has a couple wiper marks) Both doors have working door check stops! The paint outside is gone in spots primer in spots and pretty nice in spots. The chrome is nicer on passengers side than the drivers side. Drivers side farmer must have rested tools against truck a lot? Chrome grille and v6 logos are good 10 footers, they have haze and small rust pits in the chrome but as you can see they still look nice. The drivers door has some bondo and the bed sides behind rear wheels are both dented. There is typical rust in front fenders, drivers floor, door bottoms, rockers cab corners etc. There is no rust in upper areas of cab. I cleaned treated and sealed rood drip edge and I store the truck under cover at all times. The hood is solid no typical rust anywhere! the front core support and grille support all seem to be solid. The inner fenders seem to be just starting to rust in typical spots but no holes yet. The motor runs always has good power and lots of torque compared to the 305 V6 gets about 9-10 mpg and sounds cool. It does use a little oil although I am not sure what it does with it. I have added oil a couple times in 1500 miles. It does not blow a bunch of smoke when you start it cold or warm. It does not smoke going down the road and does not leak in my driveway. In fact I had a 65 year old truck driver friend follow me to church one day. When we got there he complimented me on what a nice old truck no smoke or stink even when I stepped on it to pass and even when I used 3rd gear for 1 mile down the hill into town and stepped on gas again. ?? The oil goes somewhere but your friends will never know unless you tell them. Sorry to be so long winded but I have messed with a lot of these trucks and this one is just cool unmolested and all the little annoying messed up stuff is not all messed up! SHE GETS THE THUMBS UP FROM ALL AGES.
