Vehicle Detail
I'm regretfully selling my 1983 Subaru Brat. I love this car but the fiance has bad taste :) and doesn't want it parked in front of her house. I'll try to be as thorough as possible in my description. History: I'm the 3rd owner. I bought it 6 years ago on eBay from San Diego. These owners said they'd towed it behind their RV when they traveled up north to mine gold. They even showed me their tiny gold nuggets when I flew down there to pick it up and drive it home to Salt Lake City. When I bought it the exterior was in absolutely wonderful condition. At that point it had 170,xxx miles. Today it has 170,xxx miles....The speedo failed in Las Vegas and the car hasn't accrued miles since. I have an extra speedo/odometer but it shows 300,xxx miles and it's a pain in the butt getting in there so I've never replaced it. Since I've owned the car it was only my daily driver for a few months; and hasn't been since 2010 when I bought a Subaru Legacy GT. I'm guessing I've put 25k miles on it in 6 years. About 4 years ago the transmission failed. While replacing it my mechanic realized that the engine in the car is not the original. I've never verified this but that's what he claims....so who knows how many actual driving miles and how many body miles are on the car. Body: the body's straight. I doubt the paint is original and it's been fading the last couple years. When I purchased the car there was no rust. Recently there is getting some in the fenders and a couple small odd spots around the body. I included pics. The chrome is in good shape. The REAR BUMPER was smashed by my neighbor last year so I got that hammered out and repainted(In my original ad I posted that it was the rear fender...it was in fact the rear bumper; that's why it's a fresh dark black rather than a faded black like the bumper end caps). A small dent on the passenger door and a couple small dents on the top of the front driver fender. Glass is good. Side view mirrors are both cracked but functional. T-tops seal perfectly. Rear seats are great; head rests slide up and down; seat belts work. Inside of the bed has been scratched a bit from me putting my dirtbike in the back and tieing it down. Both doors lock and unlock with key. Engine: runs fine. Water pump failed and blew a head gasket a couple years ago so I fixed that. Starter is new. 4wd hi and low both work. This thing can climb. Awesome in the snow. I prefer this on the bad days over my Legacy GT. Clutch is great. Leaks a tiny bit of oil. I get the oil changed every 6 months/1000-ish miles. I really don't drive the car much. Drive: I've replaced one CV joint; the others didn't need replaced. Alignment done about 1000 miles ago. I think the front drivers side wheel is out of balance because at high speeds there's some light thumping from that area of the car. I'm convinced it's just the wheel because that wheel was on the rear and it thumped there too. Two new tires about 2000 miles ago. The other two are still great. Interior: original seats are a little ripped. I've never had the seat covers off so I don't know how badly. Kenwood CD player with AUX port. Speakers in the doors were removed by previous owner so there's some 6x9 in boxes behind the seats. He put black covering over that portion of the door. I searched for replacement original carpet coverings but hard to find because I think the Brat doors are longer than the other Subaru doors that year. Dash is cracked in 3 spots but I've always had a dashmat. Fuel gauge is offset by 1/4 tank. Voltage is ok. I don't think oil pressure and temp are working. Car is equipped with A/C but it's not cold so I never use it. Funny thing #1: the key wouldn't turn in the ignition. I searched for a replacement but no luck. So I took apart the ignition cluster and rigged it so that I can start the car with another key, screwdriver, whatever. Funny thing #2: the rear gate latch had a plastic piece fail. So you have to unscrew two screws to get access to the latch and hold a tiny metal piece and pull the latch. This is probably an easy fix by brazing/soldering a nub on the end of the little metal piece. The unscrewing takes 60 seconds so I've just been doing it that way. If you have questions feel free to ask. I check my email every couple hours. Or call: 801-652-4175. If you have a buddy that lives in SLC that you'd like to come check it out then I'm cool with that. I have never shipped a car but I can assist in dropping the car off at the dock.
