Vehicle Detail
1958 Pontiac Super Chief V-8 370 cid, 270 HP with Hydra-Matic Automatic Trans. Built 6-58 in Atlanta Georgia. This was Pontiac's (Oakland's) 50th 'Jubilee' Anniversary, and Pontiac pulled out all the stops with this audacious flare, massive chromed bumpers, and polish of an acrylic lacquer finish. 1 out of 7,886 Built (Rare). Hard top, 4 door, white side wall tires, no body rust, original interior colors with age appropriate patina. Clean and everything works; power steering, heat, defrost, radio. Stored in heated garage for the past 25 years and re-painted (~1992) two-tone Rangoon Red (DAL-70823-DQE 'Automotive Lacquer') and Patina Ivory (DDL-8155 Duracryl Acrylic Lacquer) which are this cars original colors. Generator re-built in 1997, receipts for any or all work done. April 2014 tune-up included carburetor rebuild with choke repair, points, rotor. Period correct Goodyear tires, along with many period correct details (fuzzy dice, 'Standard Oil' tire valve stem caps, curb feeler, etc). Included will be an original '58 Pontiac Brochure, accessories brochure, and some examples of magazine adds, and the shop and body manuals. The following are previous statements and questions about the car. Statement: Hi, Nice car. Just for info, if that is the original motor, the cid is 370. Also, if you will check the paint code on the style tag, I bet the letters are H & Y. That is Rangoon Red and Graystone White. You couldn't get Rangoon Red and Patina Ivory together because the red is nitrocellulose lacquer and the Ivory is Acryllic lacquer. Hope this helps. Joe - bonnevillejoe* Statement: Your description of period correct Goodyear tires would be accurate if this were a 1962 Pontiac; not so on a 58. This car should wear the 2 3/4 inch wide whitewalls. Small matter, but one could misread that statement. Car looks good in images; good luck with your auction. Doug Ladwig/Morries - morriesclassicparts Question and Anwer: Hello, The carb -- a 4 barrel carb? Also, dual exhaust pipes? Thank you, RAY This car has the base engine for the Super Chief which was the twin barrel carburetor which was rated at 270 HP. I am absolutely certain that is why this engine has survived intact for 55 years. I admit its a little slow of the light. However, it does produce a whooping 388 ft lbs of torque at 2800 rpm. So even though it weighs in the neighborhood of 4000#, when you step on the gas pedal at 40 or 50 mph it surges impressively. These models were meant to be to be high profile cruisers. Single exhaust. Statement: FYI,If this is the original engine it's a 370 not 395.. Mike - bonnevillemike Bonneville Mike was correct.. After considerable research I confirmed it is a 370 cid. I’ll blame 1958 misleading advertising for my error Question and Answer: Does it do sweet burnouts? - neb25 Hi neb25. It probably does. Never tried that. If you need to know I would suggest buying the car and testing. Then when something inevitably breaks you could get to know the car even better. Question and Answer: Mark, I was a previous owner of this car and would like to take a look and perhaps take a few digital photos of the car. I know that your are busy but if you have time please give me a call. Thanks Bill 630-290-3340 - treasurehunt618 I met Bill Last weekend for photo’s. I purchased the car before the age of digital photos and Bill needed some photos to complete an archive of his auto restorations. Bill restored the automobile. I am certain he would be willing to speak to the next owner to relay stories of how he found and retrieved and restored this magnificent piece of automotive history. Questions and Answer: Any rust?. Any cracks in the glass. There is no body rust. In the pictures of the open trunk you will see some rusting of the lip where the weather seal attaches to the trailing edge (above the license plate). The deterioration is nearly identicle to when I purchased the car 21 or 22 years ago. . There is a rock windshield chip on the drivers side that I had professionally repaired 20 years ago. It has never interfered with visibility. Small issues like this I leave alone as I consider them part of the history of this particular automobile.
