1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Turbo Covertible     San Francisco, CA   415-205-0716   sales@carplanet.com 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible Up for NO RESERVE auction! Rare 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible. California car with both black plates. Still wearing it's original Autumn Gold paint. Fawn interior. A rare color combination. Very solid body with no serious rust. 63K original miles with documentation. Original owner's manuals. Was placed on non-op status in 2004. Not presently running, but engine turns over. One of only 2,574 built in 1962. A very worthy restoration candidate. The following is a detailed description of the car, along with over 150 photos.  iPad and iPhone viewers can access photos by clicking HERE. Please email or call us at 415-205-0716, if you have any questions. Photos        Body, Trim and Paint Likely  a one owner car and being a low mileage  California car, the body of this rare 1962 Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible remains in very original condition with no evidence of serious rust or past rust repairs.  There are minor to moderate dents on several of the body panels. Undercarriage is original, straight and solid with no rust.  The trim that is installed on the car appears to be all original. Chrome bumpers and trim still have some shine. All the unique Spyder body emblems are present. Glass remains in good original condition. The trunk lock and shift knob are missing, but are readily available. The convertible top is likely the original with some past repairs, but  is not torn or ripped. The top latches and folds up and down easily. Very rare to see on any classic car of this vintage, the original Autumn Gold paint is still on the body. Not just the color, but it's still wearing it's original factory paint job. We verified this with our paint meter which read less than 4 mils over the entire car with no evidence of bondo. As would be expected after 52 years, the paint has numerous scratches and other blemishes as can be seen in the photos. Interior All major interior components are present and  in their original Fawn color, except the front seats which were replaced at some point with some bucket seats that appear to be from  an older Mercedes. Original carpet is still present. The original gauges and switches on the dash are  still present. The second owner added a few aftermarket gauges (cylinder head temp, oil pressure, etc.) which can be easily removed. An aftermarket radio is installed, but the original AM radio is included with the extra parts. Electricals The original gauges and switches are all present on the original dash, though we have not checked their functionality. Headlights and tail lights are installed. An optional gas heater is installed in the trunk. The prior owner was, shall we say "creative", with his addition of several aftermarket gauges and assorted switches. We have carefully removed several of these added gauges, but several remain (e.g. cylinder head temp, oil pressure, tachometer). He also installed an aftermarket windshield washer pump and a pair of amber fog lights. The original odometer currently shows 63,321 miles and is likely the original mileage. A service record dated on 7/31/91, indicated a mileage of 52,364 miles at that time. Engine, Transmission and Engine Running Video The engine  (number T1027YC)  145 cid horizontally opposed air cooled six cylinder. Overhead valve. Aluminum block. Bore and stroke: 3.43 x 2.60 inches. Compression ratio: 8.0:1. Brake hp: 150 at 4400 rpm. Four main bearings. Hydraulic valve lifters. Induction was originally a Carter YH one-barrel sidedraft carburetor. An SU sidedraft is now installed. Being a an original Spyder model, the engine in this Corvair came factory equipped with a turbocharger, which is still present. The original turbo air filter canister is not installed, but is included. Though the engine is not presently running, we have confirmed that the engine does turn over. A  vacuum  system of some kind was added likely to provide a bit more boost to the turbo. From what we can see, it should relatively easy to disable it. Within the engine compartment some additional gauges were added and  will be easy to disable. An external oil cooler has also been added. The original four speed transmission is installed and does engage in all gears. Shift linkage feel is good. Suspension, Wheels, Tires, Brakes The suspension is complete and the car sits level with some records of shock replacement. A rear camber compensator is installed. The correct sized 13" wheels are installed.  The spare wheel is also the correct 13" size. Only one of the original wire hubcaps is still present. Older 13" bias ply tires are installed and are holding air. The main brakes are not functional due to lack of fluid, but the emergency brake is fully functional. Extra Parts and Documentation The following extra parts are included: Original  spare  wheel, original jack, original radio, original Turbo air filter canister, pair of extra Rochester carbs and miscellaneous other parts in trunk. Documentation will include clear California title, original owners manual, original Spyder turbo manual,  original convertible top manual, service records back to  1973 and California registration records back to the 1960's.
