PROJECT BUILD ’87 SAMMY WITH A TON OF SPARE PARTS I started this budget build back in college on a shoe string budget. The premise was to search for a platform that allowed me to follow all my full size buddies, do everything they were doing and still have fun. That search ended up with the Sammy gene pool where everything was cheaper to do than my Bronco friends. I have focused the set-up as a rock crawler, gears without horse power…. Welcome to the Sammy land. As such the transfer case has been re-geared. The rear end has a Detroit mech. locker in it and the front has the double shackle modification to allow the front suspension to unfold out of the car and keep the tires grounded and hooked up. With all the articulation I added drive shaft spacers to the transfer case to keep the splines together. I have twisted this truck, as far as it will go and I have never had any issues. I have couple favorite things about this build that have been the color matched - power coated “sport cage” I welded a bracket on for my Cobra CB (not included). Another item I enjoyed building was the front and rear bumper set. I used all the stock tail lights/side markers and frenched them into the box beams that were used. I have supported the weight of the car with them, stood the truck on its nose, stood the truck on its tail, nothing bent or tweaked. Both bumpers are essentially the first and last, frame cross members on the truck. See the pictures, yes I made them myself. Sometimes to do it right, you have to do things yourself. Luckily, my best friend owns a machine shop and we lifted the entire bumper into his machine tool and bored a 2 inch top and bottom bearing with a 1 inch shaft for the swing out tire carrier. I have personally swung open the tire carrier and jumped on the end of it trying to see if it would bend or not line up, rock solid… Additionally I mounted a front hub on the tire carrier (gotta carry spare parts) so the spare tire actually spins. This was really cool for my buddies to “wind up the toy car” before the trail… needless to say, if you have ever wheeled with a Sammy, you'll have a certain, mouth closing respect, when you are done. This truck has never been rolled but, I did tip it over on the driver’s side which dented the cowl vent area (see the pictures). I purchased another Sammy and parted it out and kept various shown parts including the red front clip and shown in the picture string. This body work would need to be completed. This truck has always been flat towed everywhere so, the hitch and cables are included. I have detached the drive shafts at the pumpkins and zip-tied them to the frame and unlocked the steering column with the key. I have towed using this method at freeway speeds to various trail heads with zero issues. I have owned it for quite a while and since the move from California to Ohio in 2005 it has sat in my garage since. Shortly after the move to Ohio, I pulled the 1.3 and started collecting the parts for the 1.6 EFI swap. I have everything that I know of, the swap kit, motor, harness etc. This motor swap would also need to be completed. The motor is shown outside of the vehicle which should set any expectations you might have. The motor had 90k miles on it; I purchased this from a local junkyard. I have not gone though it yet. See all the pictures showing everyone what’s included. NOT INCLUDED IN THE PICTURES: Wheel skates and Engine stand (my buddy wants his stand back) Included as pictured: 1.6 - 16V EFi engine (not installed)1.6 Engine swap kitThorley Tri Y header4 real bead-lock rims with 1 non-bead-lock matching spare5 stock rims and tires32x11.5 BFG Mud terrain tiresRear Detroit Mechanical lockerBirfield rings installedTwo wheel low transfer case mod.Double shackle front suspensionSpring over lift conversion1” body liftCustom Bumpers: front and rear with hitch receiversNight crawling lightsH55 Bulb conversion head lightsGM high output alternatorYellow top Optima battery - Marine version (this has set for a while, might need to be replaced)Flat tow bar and cablesTransfer case gear set with skid plateDrive shaft spacersPowder coated Full Sport cage with CB bracketTuffy Security center console with CUP HOLDERS BABY!!!! I was always thinking this would be a perfect father/son build; things are still available and relatively inexpensive to try different things. But needless to say, this is not as pretty as some of the other Sammy’s out there but if you are looking for a little less show and more capability this is a great starter truck for you. Even if you bought this and had the time to resell and part this out, you could make some money!!! I will not be parting this out, the winner gets everything as pictured. There are no warranty’s stated or implied on this. This is a non-running vehicle with clear pictures of the motor OUTSIDE of the vehicle that should be a crystal clear expectation management clue. Please have one when you are bidding on this. I will be more than happy to answer any questions or refer you to where I got my answers, well after the sale if needed. I have included some older “Glory Shot” pictures that show the capabilities, these are clearly marked and DO NOT REFLECT THE CURRENT CONDITION OF THE TRUCK. The rest of the pictures taken from inside my garage clearly show the current condition. This will be a pick up only, you will need to come with a car trailer, I will help load your rig when you get here and cry when it leaves. This has been a great truck. I truly hope this goes to someone who can enjoy this drivable roller coaster and knows what an adrenaline surge feels like at less than 3 miles an hour!!! Happy Bidding.
