Vehicle Detail

This 1966 TR4A is a live axle car; it does not have independent rear suspension. Contrary to the indication of the VIN, it does not have an overdrive transmission. It has motor number CT70086E. Probably it is the original motor, but the transmission is not the original one. Although the odometer reads 39390, I can't believe that to be the correct mileage. This car had the typical rust problems of a TR4; at the joints between the rear fenders and the body, in the rocker panels, in the floors, and in the frame. The previous owner fixed the rear fender problem by attaching the fenders with epoxy, in addition to the normal screws, and filling the seams. In the pictures it is clear that there is no stainless bead between the rear fenders and the body. He also removed the original rocker panels and replaced them with fiberglass ones. The joints between the rockers and rear fenders have been filled, as shown in a picture. He patched the floors with sheet metal. There is a picture of a patch applied to the firewall and floor on the passenger side. I replaced the frame with a new RATCO powder coated frame three years ago. It is much stronger than the original frame. The brackets for the rear bumper did not align perfectly, so I altered the way they were mounted, as shown in two of the pictures, which also show the new frame. Fifteen years ago the car was repainted in Dupont Chroma One Triumph Racing Green and hand polished to a mirror finish. It still looks good, but there are some cracks and bubbles, as shown in one of the pictures. The top and its frame are from a TR4. The top was on the car when I got it and is in very poor condition, which can be seen in one of the pictures. The windows are clear, so the top is of some use. The tonneau,on the other hand, is in great shape. The stainless strips usually found on the side of a TR4A were removed, perhaps to make the car look more like a TR4. The interior was new 15 years ago, has seen little use, and still looks great. The dashboard has been reveneered in book matched walnut veneer. The seats are from a TR250. The windows go up and down, but they are not as easy to move as they should be. The drive train is as it was when I bought the car. The motor has an electronic ignition, an exhaust header, a performance dual exhaust, and a slight oil leak. I have only replaced the water pump. The motor has SU HS6 carbs, which I like more than the other carbs found on TR4's and TR4A's The clutch disc, pressure plate, and hydraulics are new. The brake cylinders and shoes are new, and the calipers are rebuilt. The suspension bushings are all new, the rear shocks are rebuilt, the front shocks are new, and the steering rack is rebuilt. The car has four good radial tires on it. The spare is a Dunlop Gold Seal bias ply tire. The electrical system is original except that I have replaced the starter, horn relay, instrument voltage stabilizer, and horns. The horns are from a Volvo. While TR4's and TR4A's are relatively rare, parts are readily available from Moss motors, Victoria British, and the Roadster Factory. The car starts right up, sounds great, is fun to drive, and looks great from ten feet. This is a great car to enjoy. Summer driving doesn't get any better than this.
