Vehicle Detail

1973 Chevrolet SS454 Chevelle Malibu Station Wagon 1973 is the only year Chevy offered the SS package on a wagon. It is estimated 2,500 SS wagons were produced with either a 350 or a 454. This SS454 car a truly rare and unique piece of GM performance history. Watch Youtube video at: .youtube.com/watch?v=28CikJt1oSY High-optioned, mostly unmodified, numbers matching LS4 454 engine, TH400, and 10-bolt axle. Shows 79,500 miles on the odometer. Super solid western car, manufactured in Fremont CA, found in Idaho this year. Last known registration is 1994. Barn find brought back to life. Runs and drives. Excellent candidate for further refurbishing, or complete restoration. Factory options include: SS package, LS4 454 engine, tilt steering wheel, air conditioning, 3rd seat w/ 8-passenger seating, luggage carrier, power door locks, power windows, rear window air deflector, trailering package, Turbine I rims, power tailgate release, heavy duty brakes, deluxe bumpers, AM/FM/8-track, rear speakers, coolant recovery bottle, clock, tinted windows. Exterior: Mostly original paint, though weathered. Numerous dents and dings, Very minor rust (see pictures) located in front of rear wheels. Most trim in good condition, missing a few pieces. Frame is 100% solid. Underside is solid. The pass front floor had a rust hole that has been patched. I found a leak at the drip rail which allowed water into the cabin which is what caused the spot in the floor to rust from the inside. Underside of car has been cleaned, detailed, and painted. Interior: Door panels and plastic trim have been cleaned, prepped and painted. Rear plastic trim cleaned but not painted. Front and back seat have been professionally upholstered in the original style material and color. Headliner has a 2" hole and smaller tears. Carpet is new. Dash is good though has cracks along speaker. Front door vinyl was prepped and painted due to sun fading. Window regulators and tracks have been lubricated. Mechanical: Engine starts, runs, and idles nicely. Engine has been cleaned, new valve cover gaskets installed, basic tune up and oil change. Transmission tailshaft gasket, seal, and bushing have been replaced. The pan was dropped and new filter, fluid, and gasket installed. Transmission shifts nicely through all gears. Power Steering works well. Brakes working okay. Fluid has been changed and new calipers installed. Rear brake wheel cylinders may need replacing. Rear differential pinion seal and cover gasket have been replaced and the gear lube was changed. New mufflers have been installed on the existing exhaust pipes. Air conditioning compressor, brackets, hoses, and associated components have been removed and are with the car. Front bumperettes are included. This car is a great opportunity to own a rare Chevelle SS454 wagon. In my opinion this car is very original and complete and is worthy of a full restoration. On Apr-14-14 at 06:23:18 PDT, seller added the following information: There have been a few long questions. It is best to call me to go over the car in detail. 801-821-0964 Is the car restored? No, the car was not driven for 20 years and work has been done to get the car cleaned up, running, and to a mostly usable condition. Is the car roadworthy: In my opinion the car is close to being a “daily driver” suitable for local cruise nights or running local errands, though I haven’t driven the car on the street or highway. Could the car be driven across the country? With additional maintenance and service work (rear brakes, belts, hoses, etc.) it may be possible to drive this car a long distance, keeping in mind that this is a 1973 Chevy with 79K miles. Are there any leaks? Yes. The oil pan or rear seal leaks enough to leave a spot on the floor. The transmission rear seal also continues to seep fluid (new seal and tail shaft gasket helped, but did not cure the leak) and I did not notice this until after listing the car. There is weeping at the rear brake cylinders as mentioned. Keep in mind these cars leaked almost from day one, and this is typical. Air Conditioner: The compressor was off the car when it came to me, and I removed the condenser coil, plumbing, and brackets when servicing the valve cover gaskets. Is there any Bondo on the car? I have not seen any evidence of rust repair on the body panels. There is one area on the rear quarter that had an old dent repair where I removed the old filler and re-did the repair. I have a picture of the metal and it is 100% solid. I have seen a lot of old cars and this car is quite solid with very minor rust.Is the paint original? It is my opinion that this car has never been repainted. A large portion of the paint appears to be original. There is evident of older touch up, and I did minor touch up on a few large scratches, dents, and surface rust. The body has not been done with the intent of keeping the integrity of the original stripes, color, and finish to benefit the person who restores the car (if they choose to).
