Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE HE Some of the most beautiful British cars were built by the Riley Company in the thirties. The company went broke in 1938 and was taken over by the Morris Group. In 1946 they started building cars again (WWII had just ended) and Riley came out with the RM series, a car that still had a lot of features of the prewar Riley, in particular the engine and the looks. This car, the RMB with the 2 1/2 litre engine, which almost reached 100 mph, was originally bought in California, so it is an originally Left Hand Drive car. It stayed in California for a long time, then moved to Alabama, where I bought it in 2003. I bought it then, because is was a rust and rot free project car, whose engine and many parts had already been rebuilt. I did a lot of work to it and it is still a great basis for a continued restoration (about 50% restored). Engine, carbs, generator, starter, and the entire front end have been rebuilt, it has a new headliner, the dash is refinished (though it needs to be buffed out - a couple of extra coats of polyurethane wouldn't hurt), it has new front brakes (the rear probably also, but I haven't checked see that). It comes with two sets of seats (one set rebuilt and recovered with naugahyde, these are the seats that belong to this car, but the car didn't originally come with this particular set. The naugahyde has one rip, see picture. The other set is square back and tatty original leather. This set of seats came with the later model, the RMF). The front part of the chassis has been painted up to and including the fire wall and the front floorboards. On the unrestored parts there is light surface rust. There is only one spot with rust through that I have detected, on the running board (driver's side, under the chrome strip). The wood is original and solid. The old wiring harness had been removed by the previous owner. It comes with new wiring harness and many other parts. The car is 95% complete. What's missing is: hubcaps, trunk lid handle, a door handle, some handles for the window winders, the crank starter, probably some small things I cannot remember. There are no rails to the front seats. I think they can be fabricated fairly easily. Also: the wood door cappings on the inside are missing. I'm selling because I bought a 98% restored 47 RMA. I have not provided pictures of every part. All the dashboard instruments are there. There are some extra parts. I you are wondering about any part in particular, ask about it. Some of the car's parts come from an RMF, a later very similar model (the dash, e.g.). So in the interior there are some RMF and some RMB elements. If you're into strict originality, this car might not be for you. But if you want to finish a rebuild that's already well on its way, this might be the car for you. You will see pictures of the front without fenders, etc. It was reassembled so that it can be sold and transported. The assembly of the front fenders, hood, running boards are intended as a temporary assembly. The engine, trans, steering mechanism, however, have been assembled in a permanent way. The car does not run. It can be rolled and steered. It does not brake. I think it can be transported as one package - parts and stuff packed inside the car. There is a wonderful club in England that has many spare parts for the car (the Riley RM Club) and they have a great forum. I am willing to help you with issues by email, if I can. Send me a picture of something, and I'll try to help you figure out what it is.
