Vehicle Detail
I am selling my 55 Special for one reason, I am now building a 1930 highboy and need the room. The car is super clean inside and out and will make anyone very happy. The car is the original color and runs on nearly brand new Coker cross plies for an original look. The engine is what I believe to be the original 264 nailhead complete with oil bath air cleaner and dynaflow behind it. The bodywork has NO issues as you can see from the photos. The cost of the paint/body and interior alone make up the starting bid for this auction. The car received a bare metal respray just 5 years ago and it shows, it is in superb condition and draws crowds whenever it is showed. The car is permanently garaged and hasn’t seen rain since its rebuild. The interior was completely redone in 2013 at a cost of several thousand dollars. The dash was also rebuild/painted and the guages all were refurbished and look brand new. Chrome work is solid and although I can see some areas I would like to improve upon there is absolutely no reason to pull it apart again for such minor issues. The original radio was rebuilt, new speaker installed and an aux jack installed meaning you can listen to your MP3s through authentic 50s radio/speakers, crackle and all after the valves warm up! Aside from the heater all electrics work and the car starts first time every time, even when left standing for a few weeks. This is not your average 55 Special and whoever is lucky enough to own her next will be a very happy driver. Just turn the key and enjoy it as spring arrives. Underneath, all suspension parts and brakes have been rebuilt and it handles and steers beautifully. The car is as clean underneath as on top. Again, this car has NEVER seen rain since the rebuild. The gas tank has been coated internally to prevent rust. The gas pedal actuated starter is fully intact and operational as per original. The driver's side door glasses and driver's side of the front and rear screens have minor pock marks from a twister that damaged the glass decades ago back in Joplin, Mo. I consider it part of the car's history as described to me by the cars second owner and see no reason to replace them. Unlike nearly every other 55 Special you will see on eBay there is nothing custom about this car. It looks absolutely original, from the interior which was matched to the old seats/panels, to the paint which matches the original color, the cross ply tires, valve powered radio, original 264 nailhead and transmission to even the original dealer tag on the trunk lid which was carefully replaced once the car had been painted. I have traced the 4 prior owners all the way back to 1955 when it was sold in Joplin, Missouri and spoken to the second owner who was willed it from the original owner and owned it though 1995. This car was cared for throughout its life and has been garaged by each owner I have spoken to for the entirety of its life and the complete lack of rust is a testament to that.Feel free to ask questions or request additional photos. On Feb-24-14 at 05:33:57 PST, seller added the following information: I have added 5 photos showing the interior being installed so you can see how solid the floor is, NO rust. Also, a couple of shots taken in September when things were greener! On Feb-24-14 at 05:36:41 PST, seller added the following information: One more point to note. This car has been advertized online and I reserve the right to cancel the auction if it sells elsewhere. If you want the car let me know. On Feb-25-14 at 14:06:52 PST, seller added the following information: Please note that I have now added several shots showing the underside of the car. I have a few more, if you want to see them reach out to me and I will send them to you. On Feb-26-14 at 03:38:26 PST, seller added the following information: In response to those asking about what else goes with the car, I have a small box that contains some spare parts/replacements. A comprehensive 1955 Buick Shop Manual which is several hundred pages and in excellent condition and found inside the pages of the manual a receipt for $1500 for a complete transmission overhaul, performed in 2008. I will look for additional receipts later in the day. On Feb-28-14 at 09:19:53 PST, seller added the following information: OK, a final update with the auction finishing tomorrow morning... At the request of those watching/bidding I dug out remaining paperwork for the car and can confirm I have a multitude of receipts, stamps, inspection stickers etc going back to the 70s, 80s and 90s. There are pieces from the 60s too, read below. To give you an idea as to what you will get, I have the original canceled check for the purchase of the car in 1959 for $1,000 by Dave Morgan. A copy of the transfer of ownership in 1962 from him to his wife, Rema. You will see how special plates "REMA" were attached to the car in the 80s by the owner Rema willed the car to when she passed on. You really get an idea that the car really was treated as a special car from day one. Here are the mileages/dates from a couple of inspection stickers I looked at just now: April 1975 - 85,355 March 1986 - 95,023 Jan 1987 - 95,901 The odometer now shows 20,562 and I am pretty confident this indicates it as a 120k miles car as the car was off the road in 2008-9 for the bare metal respray, leaving 25k miles in 26 years which is a reasonable near 1k miles/year. How many other 1955 cars at this price can you confirm mileage on for the last 59 years...?
