This 604 was imported from France in 2002, then sold on eBay by Classic Euro Cars of Winter Springs, Florida. The prior owner passed away in 2006, and the car has mostly sat outdoors but under a cover since then. As far as I can tell it was hardly driven at all after making its way to northern Virginia. By now I've driven it far more than the prior owner did. As I have driven the car, it continues to come back to life more and more. It is a solid driver as is, or a perfect candidate for restoration. I have been driving the car regularly since July, and it has proven quite reliable over 600+ kilometers. When I listed in September, I was hesitant to recommend driving it home over a long distance, but as the kilometers tick by, my confidence in the car grows. I might not drive it across the country, but within a couple hundred miles of DC, I would. When last posted, there was an intermittent ignition issue that would cause occasional stumbling after sitting overnight, and the engine would frequently stay running after turning the key off. The terminals at the ignition coils were slightly loose, and one socket in the distributor cap had some corrosion that probably left the engine running on five cylinders some of the time. I adjusted the wire terminals to fit more snugly and disconnected every wire, cleaning and polishing every connection between the coils and the spark plugs, and it has been running great ever since. I've uploaded a large album of high resolution photos to Flickr and video of a cold start to YouTube: http://www.flickr.com/photos/karlgustav/sets/72157635462151403/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhRhj0sOIuY Yes, it really does start that easily. At the end of the video, I'm trying to show that the exhaust is clean and free of soot or oil. I will upload another video of a more thorough walkaround soon. After taking delivery, the prior owner spent nearly $1,800 having the muffler replaced and the brakes serviced. New brake rotors and pads were installed at all four corners, and the calipers were replaced in front. The rear wheel bearings were cleaned and repacked as required. Since June I have done the following: > Rectified spark and ignition issues> Replaced disintegrating foam air filter> Fashioned replacement air filter housing gaskets by hand> Cleaned the carbs and jets > Flushed the fuel tank> Replaced fuel lines between fuel pump and carbs and installed an in-line fuel filter> Dismantled and cleaned binding rear brake caliper, inspected and cleaned all brakes> Replaced accessory belts (alternator, power steering)> Resealed two of the headlamp lenses> Swapped dry-rotted Michelin Xs for newer wheels and tires, with brand new lug nuts Included with the car are two extra alloy wheels and all five original steel wheels, complete with stainless center caps and trim rings. I wasn't sure the original steel wheels could accommodate tubeless tires, so I went with a set of snow tires (not glamorous, but functional) on the alloys pictured, all of which my dad had been storing for some years. This 604 is not perfect, but it's far from your average project car. It starts on a dime, shifts smoothly, floats over speed bumps, and turns heads everywhere. The interior I would rate 9/10, with no splits in the leather at all and an unbelievably clean dashboard. The left rear window is currently inoperable; the other three are a bit slow, but work. The sunroof operates perfectly and keeps the rain out as it should. The blower motor works, and the ventilation system is free of rodent nests. The original Blaupunkt radio works (albeit on European frequencies), but the automatic electric antenna does not; I will include a new old stock replacement with the car. There are no seat belts in the back seat, but the inertia reels up front work fine. The motor is a gasoline V6 with just over 78,000 kilometers. There is no doubt that this is original. The coolant temperature holds steady right where it should whether driving around town or on the freeway. The clutch engages smoothly with no shudder. The power steering works beautifully, and the car tracks perfectly straight. There is a light vibration through the steering wheel above 100km/h probably due to wheel imbalance, but nothing at all at lower speeds in town, and it smooths out almost completely above 120km/h. The brakes work smoothly with no pulsation, and the parking brake is in working order. All the lights operate: brake lights, backup lights, turn signals, and running lights. Windshield wipers are new (modern replacements) and work well. There is no A/C and no federal emissions system, so everything is remarkably simple under the hood. The drive axle boots are all intact and undamaged. The worst area of rust is in front of the passenger rear wheel, where some metal replacement may be necessary to make things perfect. Having grown up driving a 30-year-old Citroen DS in Michigan, I know all too much about driving a car made of iron oxide spongecake, and I can assure you this car is not. I have decided to document the car without cleaning or covering up any flaws so that buyers will know exactly what they are getting. I received this message from Classic Euro Cars, who sold this car on eBay in 2002: FYI, I thought you would be interested knowing a bit of history on this car. It is one of the first 604 delivered in 1975 in France, hence the 4 spd trans and minimal options. I remember that it was delivered to its first and only French owner in Sept. 1975. He was a "notaire" (lawyer), and used this car to make the short distance from his home to his office in the suburb of the city of Chartres in the Loire Valley. When he passed away, his family inherited the car and I purchased from them and imported it to Florida. I then sold it to the gentleman in DC. So in essence, this car is a true 2 owners car ! I believe I had given all of the original paperwork to the buyer in DC. Hope you have them.I have a 1976 European model which I use for parts if the person who ends up buying the car from you needs parts. Best wishes.CONTACT Test drives and inspections are perfectly welcome. If you have any questions or would like to talk to me directly, feel free to call at 703-231-9888 between 8am and 10pm Eastern time. My name is Karl Nelson. PAYMENT Five hundred dollar ($500.00) deposit due via Paypal, wire transfer, or cashier's check/money order within five days of auction end. Balance due within 14 days, preferably cash, wire transfer, or cashier's check/money order. The first time I posted the car on eBay, I let a month pass with repeated delays before giving up on the high bidder. Please do not bid if you need to scrape the money together or make space before taking possession. I am not interested in trading this car for another project unless you're offering a Chapron DS cabriolet or something similarly ludicrous on your end. DELIVERY I am happy to work with a shipping company. I will also deliver the car personally for $100 plus $1 per mile within 600 miles of Arlington, Virginia. I will be driving to southeast Michigan for Thanksgiving and could possibly deliver within a further 300 miles of Detroit then. Free storage for up to 30 days so long as payment is completed, then $20 per week thereafter. On Nov-11-13 at 09:37:40 PST, seller added the following information: I forgot to edit the odometer reading at the top of the description. The reading in the item specifics is the current number: 78,469 kilometers. That will probably climb a bit more before the auction ends.On Nov-14-13 at 08:13:09 PST, seller added the following information: CLICK HERE FOR NEW VIDEO OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND TAPPING THE SILLS
