Vehicle Detail
1997 volvo V90.120k miles The bottom line on this car is it has some flaws, but is mechanically excellent. I am as honest of a seller as you will find. I am going to painstakingly report everything wrong with this car and report all positives in a honest manner. This is not a perfect example, but it is a mechanically wonderful 16 year old car that has been well maintained. This car is a rare find - well maintained, no rust, mechanically sound. Without the flaws, this would go for a very high premium as you cannot find such cars. First, the bad. This wagon was in a crash where the airbags deployed. The auto report will show that. It happened before I bought it and I do not have any official details on it. I have, however, had this checked out by Tom Wood Volvo in Indianapolis and they have confirmed it is safe and new airbags are good. The title is clear, not rebuilt. The damage was at the front passenger side. I have pics of the frame to bumper connection where the final repair was less than beautiful, but is strong. I can provide pics and video of everything. The bumper corner in that area has a paint issue as an indirect result of this. The repair paint work was good there, but being that it was non-factory paint, it was not as durable. I bumped into a pile of snow at work in a crowded parking lot in terribly cold weather and the paint cracked. I have provided clear pics of this. The other paint issue is the hood (I think the hood was a full replacement as it is perfect as far as shape and lines). The paint in the corner nearest the driver has a fade to it. I have provided pics of this as well. Other issues with car:The driver's heated seat does not work. The fuse appears to be fine, so I suspect it is something deeper than that. I have no idea what it would cost to get it repaired. The passenger side does work. The overhead lights mostly do not work. I think it is the connection as if you push up some on the light fixture, some work. The rear windows squeak when they roll down. I suspect if they are used up and down more, that would go away. I tend to not drive with windows down. The rear windshield washer does not work, but the wiper does. The built in cup holders are broken (they come out from the center armrest). You will not find a working set of cupholders for these anywhere at any price. They were a horribly bad design that did not last a year. I have added aftermarket ones to each side of the gear selector. They fold up. They hold nearly any size and are very sturdy. These can be seen in pics. One is black and one is grey, which is not ideal - but these can be replaced for less then $20 each, so you can pick you preferred color and order one to match the other. The headlight wipers and fluid do not work. To be clear - this is just the tiny headlight wipers. The real wipers work perfectly. The driver side rear door will not open from the outside. It opens fine from the inside. It locks and unlocks fine. Something internal to the handle has broken. The driver side brake light is not working. It has worked until recently. It stopped and I replaced the taillight assembly with a true Volvo one new - it had an aftermarket assembly and I assumed it was the problem. $140 new assembly. But the tail light still does not work. These use a socket setup that are known to be a little flaky. I am guessing this is an easy fix, but I have not had the time to take the assembly off, etc. There are some slight dings and chips, but nothing bad. I am 100% honest. This car is 15 years old and has the above issues. Many people would be more than happy to just be silent on all these issues. I am not that way. In reality this is an above average V90 with low miles. Now the good. I bought the car with ~66k miles in April 2010. I have put ~55k miles on it in 3.5 years. Most of my miles are highway miles as I commuted for 2.5 years from my suburb to downtown Indy (25+ miles each way). I have a variety of maintenance records from previous owners, with some missing gaps. I have absolutely babied this car and treated it as the vintage beauty it is. I have changed the timing belt (November 2010 at Volvo Dealer, 78k miles), replaced the entire radiator (June 2011 volvo dealer), had the transmission flushed (2012 at a place named Hash Imports who specialize in Volvos http://www.hashimports.com) and had the alignment adjusted (Hash). I just had the front end redone - new struts, mounts, etc ($750). Thing drives like new as far as being straight and tight. I have had the oil changed every 5k (sometimes at Volvo Dealer, sometimes at Hash and most recently myself) ALWAYS with Synthetic oil. Brakes were replaced in the summer or 2012 (myself). New tires in spring 2012 - Yokahama Y580 ($140 each tire) with lots of life left. These have very little mileage on them. In June of 2012 I switched jobs to a place that is 6 miles away. In addition, I swapped winter tires on from about Dec until March.Have second set of black steel rims with Blizzak winter tires. These are included. These make a RWD car great in the winter. I just put those back on, which will be the start of their 3rd winter season (figure 4 months per year with those one). Included are also Tire Rack totes that make carrying them easier. If you do not want these rims/tires, I will refund $150 of the sales price back as that is about all I will get on Craigs list (since they are a specific bolt pattern and I am not sure how many cars share this pattern) The windows are tinted with high quality film. The engine and transmission are rock solid. Never an issue. This engine, when maintained, will run a very long time. The transmission is nearly bulletproof in this car. This is an inline 6 and the LAST true rear wheel drive Swedish Volvo's. It drives like a Euro car should - just talks to the driver. Not harsh mind you, but you really are connected to the driving experience. It is a wonderful long mileage cruiser. It is incredibly comfortable to cover long miles. The V90 was made in 97 and part of 98. They replaced the 960 line and had some upgrades. There are some 1997 960's as well - essentially same car, but they tried to re-brand.This was the highest end Volvo with a $38k sticker price. The seats are incredible. They are very comfortable and the leather is amazing for this age. They used a very high end leather and I have worked to keep them in good shape. I just had the car detailed as I do every year or so and every time the techs cannot believe the leather is from 97. No tears or stains on leather. Carpet is good, but not perfect. The car is 100% rust free. It was purchased in Hawaii and spent most of its life there. It was then moved to Montana and then I bought it from a guy in Chicago (he bought it after the wreck and had it repaired). When my brother and I did the brakes, we were stunned at the lack of rust on the bolts, etc. Moonroof works and does not leak. I frequent car washes and not a drip comes through. All power windows, locks and mirrors work. Rear defrost works. AC is ice cold - I run the AC from about 60 degrees and up (I like to be cold) so I know. It has never failed to cool me down even in crazy hot Midwestern days Heat works. Speedo, clock, temp, and gas displays work and are accurate. Radio works. All speeds of windshield wipers work. Cruise works. Turn signals, lights, fog lights, brights, tail and brake lights (except as listed above) all work. Remote key works. I have one fob that works. One that only locks. I have 2 keys. It needs to be noted that when you do not use the fob, you need to unlock the passenger side two times (well, move key two times, once for that door and once for all doors) in order for the alarm to not go off. I am not sure why this is the case. Again, I hope my honesty is coming through. 95% of sellers would never tell you that as you would never find out until the fob battery died. This car has the cold weather package, which makes you laugh when you realize it was sold in Hawaii. I am sure volvo shipped these out with various configs without real care for where they went. As such, it has Winter, Sport and Economy settings on the transmission. Paint, outside of the issue listed above, is very good. I have waxed it often. There are some small scratches as one would expect for this age. This really is a great daily driver. As comfortable as anything out there. It is reliable. It is unique in that it is not like every other car out there. I get about 19/23 mpg. I am selling it as I am wanting a change. 3 years for me is about all I do. I tend to switch up totally and might get a super compact of some kind. My wife has a mini van for when we travel. This is the 2nd 97 v90 I have owned. I owned one from about 02 until 05. I sold it and always sort of missed it. Which is why I ended up buying a different one in 2010. Who knows, I might be searching ebay for another one in 3 years. They are getting really hard to find though. Here is link to many many pictures (100+) that show everything. High quality pics at full resolution. http://baldphotog.smugmug.com/Other/V90 I have the clear title in hand, no liens or obligations. Purchase detailsCash is greatly preferredCashier's check will have to fully clear first, no exceptions. They are just not that hard to forge. One alternative way is if your bank has a branch near me (Noblesville Indiana) I can meet you there and see the cashier's check being created. Pickup is preferred. Shipping is possible, but understand that you will be 100% responsible for that cost and the coordination (picking shipper, scheduling, etc). If shipping is used, I will be flexible and try to help. I will be happy to meet the shipper within 25 miles of my house, which means the Northside of Indianapolis. I can meet in a large parking lot, which is preferred by the transport trucks. I will need a day or two notice and it will need to be at acceptable hours (not middle of night as they cross the country) If you would fly to Indianapolis I would be willing to come to airport for a fee of $100 to cover the gas of two cars (since I would need a ride back - my wife would follow me in our van) and the time involved for us (1 hour each way).
