Vehicle Detail

This rare race winning Saab has certainly seen better days and needs someone to give it a thorough restoration. There were only about 1600 Sonetts made with this earlier body style, and most of them are long gone. This car was built and raced by Dan Page in the International Ice Racing Association series in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ontario for several seasons. It carried Page and his co-drivers to several victories and to the Stock/Production Class IIRA championship in about 1981. It was last raced in about 1990. Like all Sonetts, the chassis is rough, though it doesn't have large holes like most Sonetts I have seen. There is rust and some small holes in the floor, especially in the area where the roll cage was added, and in the trunk where water could collect. The body is, of course, fiberglass and has been hit and repaired on more than one occasion. The hood is currently in brown primer, the roof and the remainder painted red. The fiberglass is crazed after many years with no attention. The windshield has a small ding, and the multi-curved rear glass was replaced with Plexiglas for racing. It has an Autopower roll cage, which is probably not legal for racing any longer. The car has Koni shocks. The engine is a 1.7L V4 from a later Sonett, with a reground cam, larger valves and some mild head work, a Weber 2-bbl carb, and the steel timing gear set. Comes with many spare parts, including two V4 engines (condition unknown). There is most of a complete fiberglass body (no hood), as well as another body from a crashed Sonett racer that was cut into smaller pieces to patch damaged fiberglass panels. Several spare wheels and other mechanical parts are included in the package. I saved this historic racer with the intent of restoration, but once I realized I was too tall to fit comfortably, I abandoned the project and it sat in the barn for many years. I have other Saab projects that interest me more, so this one needs a loving home. It would make a very nimble and interesting vintage race car. The winning bidder must send a deposit of $500 within 48 hours after the end of the auction. If the buyer chooses not to purchase the car for any reason, the seller will retain $100. It must be removed from its current resting place near Duluth, Minnesota, before the end of October, 2013.On Sep-22-13 at 09:50:38 PDT, seller added the following information: Added 09/22/13: The chassis number is 001252. Tried to start the car this morning but the fuel lines were too rotted. The electric fuel pump does click like it should. The engine turns over. It appears the clutch has given out and the transmission is now stuck in gear.
