What quirks can you elaborate on? A: Hoo boy. I would be hesitant to drive a 38-year-old French car across the country, mostly because you never know what might go wrong, and parts for this car are scarce. That said, I once bought a 1960 Citroen ID wagon that had sat for 20 years with a seized engine, honed the cylinders, freed the brakes, replaced two rotted hydraulic lines, then took it on a 1200-miles test drive from Detroit to Boston and suffered no more than a blown tire. So it could possibly be fine. There is a minor electrical glitch probably related to the ignition switch that occasionally keeps the car running after the key has been removed, but that seems not uncommon among older 504s and 604s, and my temporary solution has been to simply stall the engine. I honestly haven't experienced any particular quirks that would make me worry about a long drive beyond the dash gauge lights working intermittently. I'd travel with tools, though, if at all possible. Q: Can the license plate area accommodate a standard USA license plate on the rear? Or is it not a proper fit due to the long horizontal European license plate orientation? I noticed your Antique VA plate doesn't seem to fit in the space? A: The license plate area is indeed too small height-wise for a standard US plate. I have the Virginia antique plate held on with zip ties with rubber bumpers taped onto the back to protect the trim. The prior owner bent a plate to fit. Q: Any idea what it would entail to repair the electric windows? Is the motor just blown, or do you think it's more of an electrical issue? A: The window problem might be both electrical and mechanical. There are two spare window motors included with the car that were purchased by the prior owner but never installed. The driver's window and passenger rear window did operate with assistance when I first acquired the car (safe to say the tracks probably need lubrication), but then they quit. Could be a problem at the fuse panel, but I haven't had time to diagnose. Q: If you were to keep it, what are the 2 or 3 things you'd probably fix to make it a daily driver? A: I'd fix the windows before I made it a daily driver. It's a bit of a pain to adjust the mirrors without a working window, and going through the drive-thru would be an adventure. You might also want newer tires unless you (like I) get whatever use out of what you have until replacement is absolutely necessary. I usually drove on old Michelin Xs until they fell apart. Q: I understand it's registered with a US tite in VA. Any idea if that title is valid for registration in all other states, being an import and all? A: There shouldn’t be any issue getting the car titled in another state. You may need some additional information regarding safety or emissions inspections. Standard Virginia plates would have required something explaining that the car is exempt from federal regulations because it is more than 25 years old; the inspector’s manual indicated that the car should have all sorts of emissions equipment it never had because it was originally sold in France. Antique plates made the process easier because all Virginia requires is the owner’s certification that the original safety features are in working order. One more thing to mention: There are no rear seat belts. The inertia reels with shoulder harnesses in front, however, work fine. On Sep-19-13 at 07:15:30 PDT, seller added the following information: THE DRIVER'S WINDOW IS NOW OPERATIONAL. I pulled all of the fuses and filed the ends and the fuse panel contacts, and the driver's window will once again go up and down, though slowly and with a bit of manual assistance. At the risk of having it get stuck in the down position, I only lowered it 3/4 of the way or so. The tracks and armature will probably need some servicing to restore full function, but for now at least there's something, and there isn't a major problem with the central wiring.
