Vehicle Detail

0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Rare, 1984 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler Laredo. One of 4,130 made in 1984. This is a project vehicle nearing completion. There are extra items this vehicle comes with that are not shown in pictures here, which I will put in with the sale. Items such as gas tank, original Laredo seats (need reupholstering), visors, additional tailgate, more parts that still need to go into the Jeep included. Some may be up to par, some I may have opted to replace. Several new, unopened parts are included, some of which are pictured – a new, unopened stainless steel hinge set for entire Scrambler. 4 New wheel-well trim pieces. New window seals, etc. etc. A very low approx. 8,400 miles is what this is believed to have on it. I’ve been told this Scrambler was used as a dedicated snow plow in the Thumb area of S.E. Michigan about an hour N. of Detroit. It is currently located in Chesterfield, MI near Lake St. Clair, not far outside of Detroit. Accumulating only minimal miles it was “parked in the yard” when new vehicles came along and then it sat for years. After being neglected for so long, snow and ice accumulating for nearly two decades, I obtained the vehicle and began with a mission to restore it. I’m an auto enthusiast but not an expert auto restorer. This was my first Jeep but I thought it was super cool, had lots of potential and I knew it was rare. I’m more of a sports car guy and specifically an all GM car guy. I was told about someone in the local area where I bought it would be able to do work on the body and powertrain restoration and since it wasn’t driveable I found him out and began to work with him to get it going. I’ll work to make a long story short. I’ve provided photos of the restoration process to date and where the condition where the vehicle is at present. It was a far drive from my home but I made regular check ups on the progress. It was a slow, very expensive process to proceed with a frame of restoration, but I wanted to make the body entirely rust free once again, which it is now, and I wanted to get the frame show ready – which it is now - and make the engine purr and this rare vehicle become a thing of beauty. All rust was removed and the body roughed in. The frame was sandblasted, primed, coated with an industrial strength undercoating, painted and clear-coated. We went through the whole engine and powertrain. Much of what we found was good due to the low miles. We inserted new parts where needed and painted the engine block. The guy I found had done all he could in his area of expertise, so he referred me on to someone who could do the body finish work, paint, wiring, determine what other new parts it needed and put it all back together. That person was off to a good start. I picked silver metallic, which was an “Up Charge”. He smoothed out the body really well and made it all straight as a rail. He painted it up very nice. I was very pleased. He and his wife then had their first baby followed by a number of disasters strike. Issues at his house, a number of employees quit. He found that the (substantial) amount of money he quoted me to paint and finish the project (plus my added cost for any parts needed) was too little and if he continued he would be losing money on this project. He essentially had a meltdown. He’s unable to finish it for any variety of excuses/reasons. So at this point I’m selling it. I asked him for a high-level parts list for whomever does buy it so they know some of what they are getting into. I’ve provided that at the bottom. Realize that I can’t warranty or guarantee the work that has been done. From what I’m told it will take some moderate fabrication work still at this point. Do not expect it all to be plug and play. Vehicle restoration never is. A few more things about the vehicle. It is an automatic. It was equipped with air. As you’ll see from the photos before tear down that it was slate blue metallic originally. Has the In-Line 6 cyl. Engine and 20 gal. gas tank. Note to high bidder: This is an “As Is” vehicle purchase. The vehicle is not yet road worthy and clearly needs additional work to make it fully operable. Submit and questions and I’ll reply. Vehicle is available to be inspected locally within an hour of Detroit, MI. Parts/System Overview: 1. Brake system misc. parts. Many new parts already in place 2. Fuel system setup including lines and pump. Two carburetors are included 3. Nut and bolt hardware fabrication and fitting in places 4. Completion of engine mock up for all hardware and wiring. New wiring of Jeep 5. Used parts included may need finishing or replacing (use your discretion) 6. Original Rims need to be stripped and painted, or replaced and new tires added 7. Suspension needs to be verified once driveable. Many new parts already installed 8. Complete inspection from front to rear before reassembly 9.
