(This problem is the subject of a GM TSB.) Despite not being due to abnormal use, incorrect wheel nut torque, etc. (all topics of the TSB), GM resisted covering this under warranty. After becoming fed up battling with the dealer, I decided to use the situation as an excuse to upgrade the whole brake system with high performance parts. Excellent results; noticeable improvement over stock brakes. No pulsation or other issues after 10K miles. - 11/09, ~24K: Steering box, steering intermediate and lower shafts replaced. o Box replaced with A1/Cardone rebuilt unit due to leak at pitman shaft seal. Problem fixed. o In-line power steering fluid filter installed. o Power steering fluid completely flushed and refilled with GM semi-synthetic cold climate power steering fluid (GM 12345866, $10 quart). o Decided to replace intermediate steering shaft at same time, due to infamous intermediate shaft clunk problem (light clunk when turning over bumpy terrain). Figured I may as well do the lower shaft, too. Installed GM part #19153614 (updated intermediate shaft design) as per TSB, which didn’t fix the problem. It’s now well-known this shaft doesn’t actually fix the problem, and there is still no definitive fix for it. (Google “GM truck intermediate steering shaft” and spend hours reading about it.) o - The following work was performed to address a vibration issue (described in more detail below): o 4/10, ~25K: Front-end alignment o 4/10, ~25K: Tires road-force balanced o 7/10, ~25K: New transmission mount o 9/10, ~25K: Transfer case oil changed (GM AutoTrac II fluid) o 1/11, ~26K: Differential rebuild o 10/12, ~30K: New GM driveshaft and slip yoke Issues The truck has several issues, some of which are well-known problems that afflict GM trucks (Suburban/Yukon XL/Silverado/Sierra) of this generation. If you know these trucks well, you will recognize at least some of these issues. (Of course, these are issues that I know about. There may be other issues that I am not aware of.) - Light/moderate vibration at approximately 60+ MPH. o Background: The truck developed a vibration issue sometime around 22K miles. After several attempts at tire balancing did not solve the problem, I obtained a GM EVA II vibration analysis tool, which clearly indicated a 1st-order driveline vibration, leading to the conclusion that the problem was likely the driveshaft or differential pinion. Since new GM driveshafts were on backorder at the time, I had a new driveshaft fabricated by a respected driveline shop. It altered the characteristics of the problem a bit, but did not solve it. I then had the differential rebuilt, which had no effect. After new GM driveshafts again became available, I went through two of them (1st one had a wobble out of the box) before getting a noticeable improvement with the 2nd one, but there is still a remaining light to moderate vibration at about 65 MPH and higher. It is somewhat intermittent in degree; sometimes less noticeable, sometimes more noticeable. o Another reason for the new driveshaft was to cure a driveline clunk, a common issue with these trucks. Wear on the slip yoke splines causes it to bind on the transfer case tail shaft, causing a loud clunk when coming to a stop. One solution is using GM Teflon “magic grease” on the yoke splines – which I did – but the ultimate solution is a nickel-plated slip yoke (included with new driveshaft). It fixed the problem. o Several theories as to the cause of the remaining vibration: § Still a remaining driveshaft issue, although the EVA no longer consistently detects a 1st-order driveline vibration. The GM OEM driveshafts are made in China, and the quality is clearly questionable. The 1st one had a very noticeable wobble resulting in severe vibration out of the box. The 2nd one is much better, although I’m not convinced it’s not without issue. § Tires. The EVA shows a 1st-order tire vibration that I have discounted as the primary source of the vibration given the low amplitude. However, given the situation has improved with the new driveshaft, possibly the tires are at least part of the remaining problem. The tires are the OEM Bridgestones. They were (re)balanced multiple times with the last balance being done on a Hunter GSP9700 road force balancer, where the road force numbers checked-out barely within spec, so they may or may not be fine. o Conclusion: I’ve taken this as far as I can, falling short of a solution but resulting in some improvement. I’m done throwing time and money at it. You can pick up where I left off, or ignore it and enjoy the benefit of the improvements I’ve made. - Driver Info System started showing a “Service Air Bag” message at about 30K miles. A scan by a local shop showed code B0100, Inflatable Restraint Front End Sensor. So, it needs a new front air bag sensor (located behind the bumper). (Not an issue for New Hampshire state inspection.) - Shortly after I bought it, the truck developed an accessory whine/moan noise at idle and low speeds. (Not detectable at higher speeds). I think it's the power steering pump. I had it checked by the dealer (under warranty), who of course said the noise is normal and no cause for concern. Other than being slightly annoying, it hasn’t caused any issues. - Since I’ve owned it, it has had a faint coolant smell on initial heater start up. No evidence of coolant leaks, and it passed a pressure test. This was also checked by the dealer (under warranty), who said they couldn’t smell anything and pronounced it fine based on the good pressure test. - At some point after the warranty expired, I noticed a groan/moan noise at all speeds from the front differential area when in 4-wheel drive. Yet another well-known problem with these trucks, apparently related to a front differential assembly issue. I don’t use 4-wheel drive much, and other than the noise it works fine, so I had no motivation to pursue a fix. - Noisy gauges. At the risk of repeating myself, this is still another infamous issue that afflicts these trucks. (It’s the subject of a class-action lawsuit against GM.) It never bothered me enough to get it fixed. (The instrument cluster can be rebuilt with updated gauges that don’t have the problem for about $200.) - Steering shaft clunk (already described in detail above). - Light intermittent sqeak/chirp from rear at low speeds; noticed within last few thousand miles. It seems to go away when brakes are applied, so I suspect it’s brake-related. Seems harmless. - Some light seepage evident from differential pinion carrier gasket since differential rebuild. Just wetness on the housing; no leakage or drips beyond that, so it doesn’t seem to be a problem, but noting it anyway. Condition Exterior Paint: Overall very good. A few very light scratches here and there, some normal rock chips in front (most of which have been touched up). Chrome/trim: Very good. Undercarriage Good for a northern vehicle. It was professionally undercoated by the original owner. It was not overdone; only on the frame and major structural components. However, it has peeled in spots, mostly on edges (crossmembers, brackets, etc.). The resulting uncovered areas have surface rusted. Overall, I’d say the underneath is in better shape than the average northern truck of this age. It does not look like new, but it looks better than some other GM trucks of this vintage I’ve seen. (It has been driven lightly in 3 winters since I have purchased it in Feb 2007.) Exhaust Original exhaust, in very good condition. Interior Overall very good. - Front seats: Leather seats are in very good condition. One small black mark that I cannot remove on driver seat. One small scuff mark on passenger seat. - 2nd row seats: Barely used. Covered for the last 10K miles. - 3rd row seats: I have never used them. Not sure if they were used previously. - Dash: Very good. One mark/blemish on plastic near instrument cluster that I cannot remove. - Headliner: Good/very good. One small hole (approx. ¼”) by rear hatch (there when I bought it). A few other minor smudges/blemishes in cargo area. - Cargo area: Good/very good. Several scratches/blemishes on plastic panels on both sides (again, there when I bought it). - Carpet: Very good. I thoroughly shampooed it when I purchased it, immediately installed the Weathertech liners, and have kept it meticulously clean ever since. - All power accessories in working order Cargo shade is missing; not present when I bought the vehicle. Engine Runs very well. No issues. Transmission No issues. Temperature normal (as per trans temp gauge). Shifts well. Differential Rebuilt (unnecessarily, as it turns out; see above). I don’t think there was ever anything wrong with it. Filled with Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. (Used a reusable Ratech differential cover gasket to facilitate future removal/installation.) Tires Original (OEM) Bridgestones. Good tread; I would estimate about 10K remaining. Wheels Very good. Some minor scratches.
