Vehicle Detail

You are bidding on a 1958 Porsche 356a 1600 normal coupe project car, SN 102938. This car was originally black over red and was completed on 2/21/58. The exterior was stripped to bare metal and repainted by in pearl ivory by prior owner who also had new floors and battery tray installed and brake work performed. The Porsche certificate of authenticity lists the original engine as P*68773* and the original transmission as 18506. The car currently has a VW type I engine installed attached to Porsche transmission 13772 marked 37 (March ’57) with BBBC gearing. The Porsche engine originally in car has been disassembled and is included. Its case is marked P-68773, but was replaced at some time as evident by the non-factory marking and date stamps in case halves of weeks 21 (May) and 26 (June) of ’58. All three pieces of case are marked 947. Case halves have no engine designation (original should have been marked 1600) or build number. The engine looks to be complete with Zenith carbs, Knecht air filters, tins, VJR4 BR18 distributor, etc. The only engine parts known to be missing are the fuel pump, two side tins, carb heater tubes, j-tubes and exhaust. The only damage noted on the engine is one broken exhaust boss on one of the heads. The car includes over $2800 in new parts and $1400 worth of new chrome. New parts include a YNZ wiring harness, front indicator lights, headlight buckets, brake cylinders, master cylinder, brake pads, parking brake cables, 4 YKB shocks, front bumper brackets, ashtray, accelerator pedal, etc. New chrome includes driver and passenger window frames, quarter window frames, interior pull handles, exterior handles, grab handle, rear view mirror, interior mirror, and quarter window latches. Car has matching numbers (938 or 38) on doors, engine lid and hood. Body work has bondo in a number of areas – doors, rockers, front fenders, nose, etc. and some scratches, damage and chips. The quality of the body work is fair in general, but poor in the bottom inch or so front and back. Bumper cutouts have been filled in front and rear. Front trunk lid is number matching but received a nose graft from a “B” and had kink repairs. The car still needs to have repairs completed in driver floor boards and have seat and pedal brackets (included) welded to floor. The engine compartment has a few areas of rust through in side panels. Some areas of the car, including underside of engine, lid, and door jams, have been stripped to bare metal, but have not been repainted. Interior parts include speedometer, tachometer, combo gauge, handles, front and rear seats, and visors. Most interior parts have been rechromed, but seat hinges will require rechroming. Metal front and rear bumpers are included. Rear bumper has the proper exhaust cut outs. No bumper uprights or over rider tubes are included. The front windscreen is delaminated around the edges. The rear windscreen is scratched. Side windows look good. Kentucky title. Mileage in excess of mechanical limits. Additional photos of all parts included can be found at http://s1308.photobucket.com/user/egratz/library/58%20Porsche%20102938?sort=3&page=1 This stalled restoration needs a new owner to complete the work started for a driver quality restoration or improve the body work and take back to the stunning combination of black over red.
