Vehicle Detail

You are bidding on a 1962 Studebaker GT Gran Turismo Hawk 4 speed with a Skytop sunroof. This model is the predecessor to the original Raymond Loewy design of 1953. That basic car was offered in a Champion and Commander model also in 54. Later it was also seen as the President, Speedster, and then was transformed to the Hawk series which were the Power Hawk, Silver Hawk, Golden Hawk in 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60 and 61 and eventually into the 62 GT seen above. The GT then continued in 63 and 64 with some of those being equipped with the Avanti powered Jet Thrust engines and Paxton Superchargers. The unique and most obvious feature of this GT is the Skytop Sunroof. I’ve been around Studebakers for 41 years and this is the first Skytop GT I’ve ever seen. I checked the Skytop Registry and there are no factory installed models. It appears that only the Larks had factory installed sunroofs. This GT, though has what looks like a dealer installed Skytop as it is the same model, Golde brand, that was done in the factory, and the installation is professionally done. The headliner is still in very good shape with only a couple of minor rips. And the Skytop canvass is also in very good shape. This car is truly a diamond in the rough. It is well equipped with twin traction, which is like posi trac or positraction rear end. The dash is loaded with full instrumentation. Speedometer, Tachometer, oil pressure gage, water temperature, ammeter, fuel gage and clock. The actual mileage is unknown. 07,645 is what shows on the odometer. All gages work, except the tach. I have not tried to rewire it as it appears that a couple of the wires were removed. The headlights, turn signals, wipers, fan and dash lights all work. It starts right up and drives well, though a complete tune up couldn’t hurt. The brakes do stop the car, but should be looked at. I noticed yesterday that it pulled a bit to the right under hard braking. It has two brand new mufflers and a new starter solenoid. The 4 speed transmission feels good. Many folks change to Hurst shifters for a more precise feel, but this original linkage is still OK. The jack is still in the trunk. All the glass is good, but there is a wiper scratch on the passenger side of the windshield. I have driven this car on several outings without incident, but in all honesty, I would not call this a daily driver yet. The new owner should give this a thorough going over. Belts, hoses, water pump, check the brakes, etc., just do the basics to be familiar with the major systems. Even the bad news on this car is not really that bad. Please see the undercarriage pictures to see how limited the rust is on the body and chassis. It is primarily in the front part of the rear fenders, rocker panels, and front floors. I’ve taken a before and after picture of the front floor. I put a temporary floor pan in the driver’s side to make the car drivable. Its working out very well. There are also some holes in the trunk, as seen in the pictures, but also easily patched. The body work elsewhere does not seem like a daunting task on this car. I was going to do it as an ongoing project as I drove and enjoyed the ride. The upholstery is in usable shape as is, but is due for recovering. The recliner mechanism is broken on the drivers side. I removed the cover and it appears that someone has already attempted a repair unsuccessfully. Also, I will include with the car two extra doors. The pretty model is not included with the deal. She's my lovely bride of 36 years and stays with me. Sorry fellas. I hate to part with this car, but my financial situation demands it. Buyer shall be responsible for shipping. This car is sold as is. Down payment of $500 US required within 48 hours of auctions end. Down payment may be made through paypal. Balance shall be paid with cash or bank transfer unless another form is otherwise agreed to.On Mar-04-13 at 09:32:44 PST, seller added the following information: Here are the before and after pix of the front floor. I know its a band-aid fix, but it does make the car more drivable. Here goes another try. Hopefully these are the before and after pix of the front floor. Its a band-aid fix, but works OK. On Mar-04-13 at 09:40:25 PST, seller added the following information: Now that I have the other pix added, here are more of the undercarriage. I hope these pix show just how solid this car is in its chassis. Brand new mufflers also shown. On Mar-04-13 at 18:42:48 PST, seller added the following information: For the sake of clarity and full disclosure of my foolish mistake in the original text... the GT is the SUCCESSOR to the original Loewy design of 53, not its predecessor. My goof, but I suppose it was obvious to all who know these cars. Sorry for the mixup.
