Vehicle Detail
As Classic Cars the prices on Porsche 912's have risen considerably. The Porsche 912 was built from 1965 – 1969. 1968 was the last year of the Short Wheel Base “SWB” 911 and 912 Porsche cars. It was the year Government emission regulations caused Porsche to use a Smog Pump on the 912 engine which heated things up and eventually burnt valves. Some say the SWB cars were the 901 in its purest form. The early short wheel base 901 and 902 (911 and 912) cars had some of the best build quality of any car ever made. These cars are made of real steel and metal chrome plated parts that were meant to last. The short wheel base cars were from a time of artisan car builders who put every bit of skill, craftsmanship and style into their work. This 912 for sale was built in 1965 (VIN #452477) in the Karmann factory. originally Bahama yellow with a black strip from front to rear, it is now a creamy yellow. I have had this Porsche since 1978. The car was completely restored in 1980 with a DuPont Imron paint job (the best performing polyurethane enamel that offers excellent durability, gloss and color retention - they paint with the stuff!!), black powder coated metal trim and real magnesium rims. It has been my "on again, off again" main car but in the last 15 years I have not been driving it much. The engine was completely rebuilt about 15 years ago by a reputable Porsche shop in Los Altos, CA. The engine has less than 3,000 miles on it and it runs great!! The transmission and shifting are smooth (5 speed manual). The car has many extras: Mag wheelsWeber carburetorsNon-stock pistons, cylinders and cam for more horsepowerCustom speaker enclosure in the backShoulder harness seat belts for Driver and PassengerRecaro seats (needs reupholstering but are currently descent)Pioneer CD player This was never a “Salvage” car. The body and interior are in good shape but it needs a little TLC. There are some small areas where there is a bit of rust bubbles underneath the paint but the frame and body are intact. This car has never been in an accident and has always been stroed n a garage. The interior upholstery is in good shape. Mostly cosmetic things need attention and the usual maintenance for a car that is 45 years old. It is a great project for someone who loves these old Porsches but wants to have a mechanically well running car that cosmetically is pleasing and clean but isn't perfect. Title: ClearPlate: 6XVM281 (this is a new plate, pictures show 2BGL053) VIN: 452477 (this car was built in 1965) Serial No: 6605 Please ask questions or if you want more photos, I would be happy to send them to you. If you are local (San Francisco bay area) we can make arrangements for you to see the car.On Feb-13-13 at 17:39:16 PST, seller added the following information: More pictures added. With some of the questions I am getting I will post the responses here: 1. I have owned the car for 35 years. I am selling it because I want to see it go to someone who will enjoy, take care of and possibly even further restore/show it. I have other hobbies and I can only pay attention to one at a time. This car needs to go to a good home. It is so much fun to drive it and even now I'm having second thoughts... When I am out on the road with the car I ALWAYS have someone come up to me to look at the car, talk to me about it and usually reminisce about their own or Porsche's in general. It is in high-end condition for a "driver" and has Concourse potential. 2. The engine does not have a serial number. It is not the original engine, it was rebuilt by Reitmeir's Werkstatt in Los Altos CA. As I understand it, rebuilds frequently do not carry a serial number on the generator tower. The engine has been bored out for a little more HP. It pulls well, starts flawlessly, doesn't leak gobs of oil, doesn't burn gobs of oil, has < 3,000 miles on the rebuild, and has that wonderful Porsche throaty hum. Here is where I start to wonder if I should really sell it..... 3. The transmission shifts well - 5 speed manual, 901 shift pattern. The transmission had been rebuild a while ago and I couldn't tell you how many miles it has on it. 3. Rust is there but minimal. Two bubble areas on the exterior: one by a headlight along the edge where the front lid closes and the other along the top of the driver door by the window trim edge. In the battery area there is some but minimal - from what I am told to take care of it would mean stripping the area to bare metal and re-coating with a sealant. None of the critical areas in the car are "rusted out". It has been kept in the garage. It has been in California (Orange County or Bay area) all it's life except for 2 years in Seattle in the early 80's. 4. The car is sold "As Is" and I make no claims as to it's future reliability, it's chance at being a Concourse performer, any future value claims and I make no warranties. With all of the quirks of a 48 year old car, the Buyer will accept these sometimes (or sometimes not) charming characteristics. You are welcome to see and drive it - one interested Buyer already has!! I am happy to send more pictures. On Feb-13-13 at 21:06:26 PST, seller added the following information: An additional comment: those wheels that you see....they are real magnesium Mags! These are little gems!! Be glad to send you a close-up picture. On Feb-18-13 at 23:15:19 PST, seller added the following information: Lots of folks are asking about the condition of the suspension and rust underneath the car. From what I can see there is not rust in the important places BUT I will take the car to a Porsche and Vintage car specialist, have them put it on a lift and inspect the underside and also the front (by the battery). I will post this information as soon as I get it. Stay tuned......On Feb-21-13 at 00:16:17 PST, seller added the following information: Undercarriage Inspection yields the following information - inspection focused on presence of rust:- some rust found near right front fender (included in the pictures).- some rust found in left door jamb (minor).- some rust found under vehicle around left front control arm mounting bolts. This is minor and does not affect or encroach upon the mounting assembly. This is easily repaired.- found small hole under the vehicle on the unibody just behind drivers seat probably caused by running over something (hole is less than a 25 cent piece in size). The front battery compartment ( the "Hell Hole" as I understand it is called) has minimal to no rust. The rest of the car is clean. I can supply you with the evaluation from Topline Automotive. I can also send you pictures of the underside if you request them. Since I have filled up the maximum of 24 pictures that Ebay allows, I will have to send them to you in a separate email. Please include your email address in the request. Additional information: This is a non-smoking car - I do not smoke and nor do any passengers in this car smoke. After several people have driven this car to assess whether to bid or not, I am told: it handles very well, the steering is responsive (not heavy), it pulls well, it brakes well, is approximately 110 HP, suspension feels solid. The general consensus is that this is a pretty solid car. While this is not a scientific evaluation by any means, all of the people who have driven the car have extensive backgrounds in vintage cars and Porsches so I thought I would pass this along.
